Fearing God in some people generates obedience. Rather like the threatened child who is forced into submission from her/his naughty ways. Hell fire and brimstone serves the same purpose. Still, our Lord is one of mercy, forgiveness, compassion ... The scriptures are full of passages that tell us to love God. The essence of religion is to fear God and obey God. The quintessence of spirituality is to know God and to become god-like.

Yes there are many places which say exactly this but be careful.  Lord, lord god Father God all of these are not always the same.

The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. One should Never Fear their Father but his Father's wrath.

One should always Fear the Loss of their Father Their GOD.
The god of our world is Not the GOD of the World.
These two are of different worlds.

Revere and fear are purposely confused within the Good Book to cause One to Discern the truth which lies upon the Pages. There are tares and Golden Wheat within the Book. And this world that we live in is in a state of of Confusion.

Until one realizes that there is a world within the WORLD which is beneath the World or Heaven. The Dwelling place  of GOD the Father. There will always be confusion. GOD is not the author of this confusion.

GOD has given control of this world our world to Satan the God of It. Our Bibles and their Scriptures are Holy. But never has it been or will it ever be completely true as it is written. Because It is written by Men Inspired by GOD, gods, and the God of this our world our planet our earth.

One must find the Good and Holy Things of Father, Our Lord Jesus the Christ, And the Saviour of this world that we live in.

Remember that Satan the Fallen Lucifer will attempt to Fool the world and will succeed. As he will Come back incarnate in his GOD given body. And pretending to be Jesus the Christ and the true Saviour of this our world.

GOD is not the author of the confusion. Lucifer is playing (God) which is this God of this our world and he is Satan the Fallen Lucifer. Why? Because GOD renamed him for the lack of truth that was no longer found any within him.

We are the ones that fell with him and were captured by him and his host of angels who are Not reborn into this our world through woman (Flesh) but remain as Son's of GOD serving the God of this world. Some now call them Demons.

I'm going a different route with this answer and suggest that "fear" as in the "fear of God" is not defined the way we most commonly use the word "fear". Take a look at a dictionary, and you will find that one of the definitions of "fear" has nothing to do with being afraid of punishment or of wrath. #4 in dictionary.com says "reverential awe, especially toward God: the fear of God. Synonyms: awe, respect, reverence, veneration."
