How MANY of YOU think that the world is going to HELL in a handbasket?
I don't. In very many ways the World is better than it has ever been. As individuals we have freedom of speech, conscience, liberty, things that were impossible a few hundred years ago. Scientific enlightenment has removed the yokes of control of the Church over our lives. We have technology to improve our lives and bring a level of ease and comfort unheard of 50 years ago. We no longer have people starving in the West. We are free from parasites, disease and pestilence that limited our life spans to 40 years just a few hundred years ago in Europe. We no longer go to war to take someone's land.
Of course there are many areas of the World where the lives of the Westerner are just a pipe dream, but things are improving for humanity around the World. I'd rather be alive now than at any other time in human history.
Excellent answer. In many ways, the world is indeed a much better place than it was. To me, people have become more humane and evolved since the devolvement of religion. However, in many ways, the world has become worse-terrorism, wars, etc.
Some portion of humanity has held such die hard negative beliefs since we got ourselves evicted from The Garden. Of course, those same folks would bitch if you were to hang 'em with a new rope.
Hello my friend,
I truly hope not. I pray daily that those who have not accepted Christ will do so before it it too late. As far as the world conditions, there is still so much evil in this world. Our country has become morally disgraceful with all of the political correctness. Where have our morals gone? I'm afraid it is only going to get worse.
JT. Every generation complains about the morals of the next. Young people have always had sex outside of marriage, people have always had affairs, and dare I say it, there have always been homosexuals. What's the beef?
They weren't considered to be "Politically Correct" now were they??
?? People are no different now than they have ever been. Although our collective human morality has improved greatly. What you called PC, someone else calls live and let live.
That would be an erroneous understanding of it, then. Political correctness involves imposing one's preferences onto another through various enforcement means both social and legal, not living and let living.
Absolutely Atikos, I agree with you 100%. Look where it has gotten this country. DH.. People are most certainly different. There is more cruelty and lack of morals than there has ever been. People killing people so nonchalantly. They r desensitized.
JT have you never studied ancient or medieval history? These were times where cruelty, lack of morals, people killing people nonchalantly was not confined to criminals and drug dealers, but instigated by the Church, the aristocracy, and governments.
DH...... You are exactly right "medieval" times! I would hope that we have come so far from the times where such evil was "accepted!" I'm afraid we have not. We are a society of Romans gazing into the arena watching others slaughter one another.
JT. Are your tortured for your beliefs? No. Do you see gladiators fighting to the death on TV? No. Do you neighbours in the next town raid yours and rape the women? No. Does America invade sovereign nations? Er yes....Maybe you are right then.
Did you ever stop to think that maybe it's already there? Perhaps the world is hell, and we're all here on life sentences for our crimes in heaven.
Wait! They get a hand basket?!! I always heard that the alcoholics are surrounded by kegs with holes and the sex maniacs have women who don't.
I don't think so. We tend to focus on positive or negative things based upon how we feel (our own life) is going!
If you have a great job, making excellent money, and you are presently laying on a beach in Bora Bora grooving to the sounds of your iPod and sipping on Mango Daiquiris...etc
Odds are (you're loving life!)
On the other hand if you are unemployed, having problems with your significant other, live in a violent neighborhood, and go to bed each night watching the news I suspect you're not going to view the glass as being half full. :-)
"Perception is reality"
So true. I can shop when/where I please and have sushi almost every day. Life is good so far and I am retired on a pension!
Personally, I think we humans, as a species, are on the improve. Can you imagine what it would have been like in the Dark Ages, or in medieval times, let alone before that. Every village, every hamlet stood in terror of being attacked, the inhabitants murdered, the women raped, and the whole place burned down by a neighbouring tribe. Okay, so we know that can still happen in some places in the world, but for the most part it no longer does.
Things got really bad in the first half of the last century: two massive world wars with half the young men in the world fighting one another. But we haven't had a world war since. The Cold War, which could easily of put a complete end to Humankind on Planet Earth burned out when the Berlin Wall came down.
Various dictators and military juntas are holding on around the world but democratic principles are slowly, albeit very slowly and against great resistance, coming into being as the peoples of indiviidual nations insist on it.
Then there's all this business about 'us versus them' on the Religions issue.
But the Saracens and Crusaders are not fighing battles as they were back when the the a pontiff in Rome could persuade whole nations to take up arms.
World-wide travel, tourism, back-packers, cheap air fares, the Internet, are gradually rendering large-scale warfare obsolete. People are beginning to identify themselves as being 'of the world' rather than 'of the nation.' Oh, I know it's happening very slowly, but it is happening.
The world going to hell in a handbasket - what rot!
Sometimes I really wonder as people grow more self-centered and events become more troubling , but this has always been a worry. I have my asbestos suit packed and ready, just in case.
The current conditions are the worst in human history, but there are ways to live your life in happiness and joy.

Have you ever been to a nude beach? If so, what was your motivation for going?Do you think that Americans are more modest when it comes to nudity than say, Europeans? Why or why not?

Are you afraid of going to Hell?I'm afraid. I'm worried I should be religious to avoid Hell, but I don't believe God would send me to Hell because I don't know what to believe. So are you afraid of going to Hell for all eternity?

Why is it assumed that Morals are dictated by Religion? Doesn't that scare you?It is mentioned a lot that Morals are dictated by Religion, and the inference (or the direct statement occasionally) is that therefore Atheists are immoral. What makes people think this? I'm curious. Has anyone...
