Jesus said, "Ye are all gods." What did he mean?

Jesus answered them (the Pharisees), "Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?" John 10:34
Taken in Context, was Jesus being facetious... perhaps clever? Was he saying that we are all gods with a small g? Was he simply throwing the Pharisees words/laws back at them...?

Perhaps Clever, I believe LOL. I'm learning just how clever, smooth, mysterious, and wise in his ways in dealing with the Devil and man that relied on human reasoning. He spoke Truth to them and their ears was dull of hearing. We are gods because we are made in His image. As Christ is so am I in this world.

He meant exactly that.  We all have the means to achieve high states of consciousness.  The intent of biblical teachings is to pass that everyone has the ability to achieve this.  Jesus was a man who showed the way - the way to become one with Christ - Christ Consciousness.  Anyone teaching that you do not have this ability is in essence teaching false doctrines,  or has misunderstood teachings.

Jewels, thank you for your comment. My mom was into "New Age" and I have studied some of it myself. The thing that didn't work for me was that the focus was always on me and my works. At this juncture, I am studying faith in the Creator...

You are wise to do so. Narcissism and false theology always lead to disaster.

Thank you glynch1. Narcissism is the exact word that came to mind when I think of where I was before. I appreciate this extra comment you made more than you know.

Jesus WAS New Age and taught things that seemed New to the Church's way of thinking.  You all are thinkng about EGO not Narcisissm.  There is a difference. U create therefore U R the creator. Jesus taught that and is not false doctrine.

      Guinevere,
Jesus was not "New Age"; I truly do not know what Bible you are reading. He stressed rebellion against the only true God as the impediment existing between man and God. He died in our place to remove that barrier, so that we can know God.

Where did he state any of that?  What is UR def of New Age?  Is it the Church's Def?  What Bible R U Reading? We R the true God.  If U weren't here, would anyone else exist and vice versa?  U R the only 1 response for UR actions and thoughts. JC taug

      Lady,
If you do not know of anyplace in the New Testament where Jesus spoke of sin against God, then that shows that you have never read the New Testament--the one that most true Christians accept as the Word of God.

Who the heck is talking about sin against god???  Read my answer to see what Jesus said if you don't believe me.  I do know what I am talking about.

Hi Lady G. Agreed, we are responsible for our actions. Please note though, New Age teaches pantheism (God is an impersonal force, while the Bible teaches theism: God is sovereign and personal. The important thing to me is that power comes from Him.

    10. Lady Guinevere profile image66
Lady Guinevereposted 10 years agoin reply to this

Pantheism was here long before Jesus got on the scene.  Mind you that Jesus didn't write anything that is in the Bible yet we are supposed to follow him to get to God.  God was in that Bible before JC was.  Why use the Bible as a weapon it is not.

      Lady,
You need to brush up on your Christian theology a little. The Word (as God the Son) was with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit  (John 1:1). In addition, the Bible is the sword of the Spirit; therefore it is a "weapon" to be used.

    12. Lady Guinevere profile image66
Lady Guinevereposted 10 years agoin reply to this

Really, did Jesus tell us to use the Bible as a weapon?  NO HE DID NOT!  The bible was not even formed until several decades after he died.  No what you sow is what you shall reap and what that is is up to U and only U.

If you knew the Scriptures, you would know that the Apostle Paul tells us that the Word is the Christian's weapon against theological error. And you never replied to what John's gospel says about the eternality of the Word. You are sadly deceived.

Apostle Paul is a FAKE and he didn't even teach what Jesus taught.  he did the opposite. Strange that you will not read my answer to this Original Question.

Apostle Paul a FAKE??  Woa! That's way out in left field. A man who willingly dies a horrible death for his beliefs is no fake. Biblical manuscripts have been found and fully researched for their authenticity. They were written between 30 and 70 AD.

Asaph informs Israel's judges, whom he designates “gods,” that God will judge them for their injustices, and especially for those mistreatments which they forced upon the poor (vv. 1-4).  These men, who stood in God's place among the people, are spiritually ignorant and blind, and will die in dishonor (vv. 5-7). [Jesus rebuked the leaders in Israel who accused Him of blasphemy by quoting verse six to them (see John 10:34).  He contended that His works spoke clearly of His relationship to the Father, and that they should not, therefore, oppose Him for identifying Himself with God].

Hi Glynch1. It sounds like Jesus was quoting Jewish law because his time had not yet come (to die), but that he was also making a point about his relationship with the Father. Thank you!

He was emphasizing the error in ways of the Pharisees.
The teach from the writing but cannot see the light of which the writings came...
So therefore  the same writing  from which they teach, actually speak against them.

That which you have confidence in, to represent their Life, Actually speak of their death....

So it is True, that .... Ye are Gods.....( which the Pharisees themselves deny, otherwise they would accept Him Jesus as the Christ, but not only Jesus but themselves also.)

But you die like men.....(ignorant of the reality of Life, despite having the knowledge  readily available)

So they are the fulfilment of the negative of the writings, despite their holding it in highest esteem.

This is many today, especially the Christian, but not limited to them

    1. savvydating profile image90
savvydatingposted 10 years agoin reply to this

Hi Kess! So then Jesus was simply pointing out the error of the Pharisees ways by using their own law against them. Nevertheless, are you also saying we are gods (created in His image?)

    2. glynch1 profile image66
glynch1posted 10 years agoin reply to this

Psalm 82:6--the verse Jesus quotes--only indicates that Israel's judges were God's representatives. If the OT uses the word "God" (elohim) of men who were representatives of God, then the Jews should not oppose Him for calling Himself the Son of God.

It's pretty straight forward in this passage:
    Isaiah 41:22-24
    Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
22 They bring nigh, and declare to us that which doth happen, The first things -- what they [are] declare ye, And we set our heart, and know their latter end, Or the coming things cause us to hear.
23 Declare the things that are coming hereafter, And we know that ye [are] gods, Yea, ye may do good or do evil, And we look around and see [it] together.
24 Lo, ye [are] of nothing, and your work of nought, An abomination -- it fixeth on you.

Jesus then also reinforced this when he stated the we reap what we sow.  We are gods that created and destroy by even our thoughts and the emotions that we put behind them.  When we take responsibility for those then we begin to think about what we are putting forth as to what we will bring back and therefore create (just like the God that we are) our own lives.  An outside God is not to blame or praise for anything because Jesus said that everything is within us and that is also where he put all the laws....consequences for what we do....and this can be for the good things and also for the bad things that we ask for in our lives.

Lady Guinevere. I just read those verses (from NIV). I am struck mostly by verse 24, which seems to say our works and idols amount to nothing. The things we do come from the power of God. Thank you for replying so quickly.

I have the KJV and the NIV. Both are used by historical scholars. Lady G., I understand where you are coming from. As I mentioned, I have studied New Age and I see the attraction, but it isn't for me. I find it too broad and nebulous.

All this is written in the Bible, so that would also make the Bible N A, by UR standards.  Young's literal is way older than the 2 U site from.  Get someone who knows hebrew and I bet it won't say the same as the 2 U use.

I'll look into YLT.  However, Isa. 41: 24 reads basically the same in YLT as KJV... "to not fixate on ourselves." Even 22 & 23 lead up to this conclusion. Perhaps you misunderstood me earlier. I am not using "weapons." Just having amicable discus

" it fixeth on you."  Of course it is on YOU/Ourselves because it is us and not some outside source doing anything.  As Jesus said we reap what we sow, not god reaps what he sows ore we sow.

Isn't it to be concluded that since God made us in his image, that we are all in his likeness. Jesus was, in essence, trying to raise our level of thinking, he was truly a son of God. That's my opinion.

Do we not worship ourselves (give in to desires of flesh), our thoughts, our learning and knowledge?  Does not the law say "Thou shalt have no other god before me?"  Do we not place ourselves, thoughts learning and knowledge before God?  Did the Jews not say in John 10:33 "For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God?"   Did not Jesus say in Verse 38 "...though ye believe not me, believe the works, that ye may know, and believe..."  In verse 39, did they continue not to believe and "...sought again to take him?"

Therefore, the Jews (since thinking themselves to be knowledgeable in the law, like the majority of religion does, and not of a spiritual nature) worshiped themselves and their knowledge of the law more than they did Jesus although they "had seen" His Works!  These (as they have done today) have made themselves gods of themselves in the sight of God!

Tradition, religion, and one's "knowledge" of resources other than Scripture is causing the same destruction today! If one would do as stated in Proverbs 3:5 which says "Trust in the Lord with ALL thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding"  they would become one of the one's that have found that "narrow path" and "few" that finds it!"  (Matthew 7:13-14)

Not in "deity" as GOD, but we have authority over thgs in earth (Gen 1:26; Ps 115:16); therefore, we are (small "g") gods!

Jesus is way beyond clever in His answer. His answer reveals the eternal purpose of God. In Genesis, Elohim (the plural God), created mankind in His own image, after His own likeness. The goal was to make mankind like Him. God achieves this goal by allowing mankind to partake of the Tree of Life, which symbolizes God Himself. When God's life enters into man, who is already in the image of God, we become like Him in life and nature.  We do not become God in His deity, but as sons. Satan, aware of this plan, seduced mankind into being "like Him" by taking the other tree, the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. This is the attempt to be like God through self effort, religion, meditation, good works, etc. People worldwide are trying to be like God.

Jesus is the Son of God. He fully was one with God, possessing the life and nature of God. He was God Himself become flesh. The Jews in John 10 were offended because Jesus, being a man, made Himself God. The Jews did not know the purpose of God. Jesus was indeed God become a man. Furthermore, God's intention was that all mankind become like God. Jesus knew this, and the psalmist who Jesus quotes knew this as well. Psalm 82:6 says "I said, "You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High". This is God's desire for all people. To become a son of God means to partake of the life and nature of the Son of God, Jesus. This is the main message of the New Testament. It is not about making us religious, or making us merely good, ethical people. Neither is it about bringing us to heaven. It is about making us sons in life and nature. John 3 speaks of us being "born from above" which means God's Spirit enters into us to be a new life. Then we learn to feed this new life. Peter says "like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation" (1 Peter 2:2). We learn to live according to this new life, setting our mind on this life, forsaking the old life of the flesh, becoming sons of God. Listen to Paul from Romans 8: "so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit....For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. "   In 1 John we read the end of our faith..."Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is" (1 John 3:2). This is our goal.
