Blood can be defined as a fluid that circulates in the vascular system of humans and most multicelled animals supplying nourishment and oxygen, carrying away waste products and plays a major role in safeguarding the body from infection. In the bible God gives instruction about blood in the literal sense. For example when he told Noah that he could begin eating meat he gave him these instructions Genesis 9:3,4- "Every moving animal that is alive may serve as food for you. Just as I gave you the green vegetation, I give them all to you. Only flesh with it's life - it's blood -you must not eat." Yes eating or drinking the blood of animals was clearly prohibited.

The command to abstain from blood is found through out the bible. Even in the first century Christians were told to abstain from blood. Acts 15:29 states: "to abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from unchastity; from which things keeping clear, you will be doing well". History confirms this was understood to be a literal command, Tertullian an early Christian author stated: Christians “do not even have the blood of animals at [their] meals . . . At the trials of Christians you offer them sausages filled with blood. You are convinced, of course, that [it] is unlawful for them.”

That being said however the bible does point out that blood when it came to sacrificial offerings did have a symbolic meaning. The Israel of bible times had to offer up animal sacrifices as a provision to receive forgiveness for their sins. What symbolic meaning did this carry? Hebrews 10:1,4,10 - "For since the Law has a shadow of the good things to come...for it is not possible for the blood of bulls and of goats to take sins away....By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time." Yes those offerings the Israelites had to give was only a temporary provision that allowed them to have a relationship with God until the Messiah came. Those sacrifices pointed to the ultimate sacrifice that would be made by the Messiah, and those who choose to exercise faith that ransom can receive forgiveness for their sins.

But what really does it mean to exercise faith? Visit www.jw.org to learn more.

Blood is the required sacrifice that God commanded.   Throughout the bible there are many kinds of blood sacrifice, different animals at different time for specific reasons.
BUT the only blood of any significance to a Christian is the Blood of Jesus Christ, the one perfect, final payment for the sins of all mankind that will repent and accept it as such.

Rom 3:23-26    for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Rom 5:8-9    in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

Col 1:13-14    He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
