Would you encourage them to stay?

(philosophical hypothetical question) Imagine you had a friend who was considering a relationship. In this relationship, they must see themselves as the passive partner, to follow the rules set by the other partner, for fear of punishment. This could anything from ignoring them, to physical punishment, to even death - they know not when or how this will be. That the partner may know that they will do these things, but punish them anyway. What would you say to this person? Would you encourage them to stay, to enter into this relationship? Or would you tell them otherwise?

Yes - to the email. And, no, its not actually a psycho thriller movie plot. However, the answers will help me with something I am writing, which..sadly isn't a movie plot either!
