   Would you encourage them to stay?
   
   (philosophical hypothetical question) Imagine you had a friend who was considering a relationship. In this relationship, they must see themselves as the passive partner, to follow the rules set by the other partner, for fear of punishment.This could anything from ignoring them, to physical punishment, to even death - they know not when or how this will be. That the partner may know that they will do these things, but punish them anyway.What would you say to this person? Would you encourage them to stay, to enter into this relationship? Or would you tell them otherwise?

   That is surely a psycho thriller movie plot.
   
   This sounds like wives in a third world country.  They are their husband's punching bag.
   
   But, in the Bible, it does say that the husband can beat their wives with a switch that is no larger than some given measure.  Wives have a status just a smidgen above the cattle and goats.
   
   In one word, I would tell my friend, RUN!

      Yes - to the email. And, no, its not actually a psycho thriller movie plot. However, the answers will help me with something I am writing, which..sadly isn't a movie plot either!

   I do not believe I would but knowing I have lived every characteristic of very type of man, it is possible I would.  My conscious mind says no but my spiritual mind, I've surrendered my conscious mind to, may not agree.

   Life is a (personal) journey.
   The knee jerk reaction is tell people what they should be looking for in a mate and how unhealthy it is to be submissive in a relationship. However there is nothing anyone can say that will make another feel differently about what gives them pleasure or (their) preferences.
   You can't tell someone what makes (them) feel good or happy!
   There is no such thing as an "universal deal breaker". Whatever you or I could come up with there are people living under those exact conditions who have NO plans of ever leaving! 
   I would not encourage a person to stay. I could only tell them why that would never work for me. And then I would ask them why they found it "appealing". Even those who are into BDSM aren't open to being killed. They usually want some type of "safe word"  to end the punishment! Maybe this person is depressed or suicidal.

   I think jlpark the querry is related with a practical difficulty, see the relationship between a man and a woman should rest on love and mutual respect. The relationship is vibrant so long these elements bind both. And anything of the sort you mentioned happens is just because of the absence of either mutual respect or love. In such a situation thinking of staying together seem to be a wise decision only if there is a chance of betterment if not 'exit from the relstionship' is a good option. This life has limited days don't waste them, live a good life with the one who loves and cares for you. All the best. May God shower His mercy on you.
