How a world can be visualized without religions?

Though the world has significant population of those who believe in one or the other religions, but there is a considerable strength of people who believe that the world can be a better place to live in without religions. Let us understand how this claim - world without religions -  can be visualized.

Easy, we by default start with the assumption that we know nothing, and strive to learn from there. It's very possible that not only could we be more advanced, but alot more peaceful globally if some of the...hiccups of history had been avoided had religion either not existed, or hadnt had such a stranglehold on society as it did.

Seems like a more rewarding task than assuming we know everything and killing people who don't agree...

If that advancement has to be continued from generation to generation than what mode do you apply? As you know advancement in the human society demands continued efforts.

Your follow up questions rarely ever make any sense to me Javed.

OK fine Link, then what would be a sensible approach to that?

Link you are so rapped up in your thought you cannot see the thought of another. That is just great if you want to stay in your pigeon hole. Spread your wings and try to learn from others.

I don't actually get what you're trying to ask me Javed is what I meant.

And Eric, are you going to elaborate or just assume BS and call it a day? If you're gonna cop an attitude with me please have a damn good reason other than your imagination.

Link... You said from an assumption of knowing nothing we became more advanced. So how come that advancement continued from one generation to another generation, as we know without continuation advancement can't sustain.

A moment of honesty is too much to ask for huh eric...

Javed I said we should start with the assumption we know nothing (in terms of God) and try to learn from there. Im still at a loss as to what ur asking, but knowledge is passed thru education

I think Link knowing everything and killing don't match, what I believe is if you have knowledge the very first thing that it teaches is what humanity is all about. Historical hiccups can't be an excuse, there are glittering instances too.

There are people throughout history, as well as in modern times, who assume they have some kind of divine truth and will kill those that try to refute it.

Acquiring Knowledge doesn't exactly mean people will learn from it properly either.

That truth need to be severely denounced that allows its followers to resort to killing. What I believe is Truth enlightens the hearts that in turn become epitome of humanity. The purpose of acquisition of knowledge has to be the same.

This is good. I wondered about javed's follow-up, too. And what is Eric's problem? Clearing the spiritual knowledge slate and starting over from scratch while we are no longer controlled peasants who can't read could lead to less hate - unacceptible.

If the 'Religionists' would allow everyone in the world to have their own, personal religion, that is, BELIEFS  and at least tolerate that others have as much right to their beliefs as they have, the world would definitely be a better place.

What we need to remember is most people do not have the slightest comprehension of what God is, yet they will go along blindly accepting certain beliefs because, in those tender, formative and vulnerable years, they have been told WHAT to believe and took it in without the slightest analytical or evaluative thinking on their part.  They were infants, after all.

"Get 'em before they're seven years of age," I heard it said of a particular religion.    That's what the people of world are up against.   Yet, I'm an optimist.   The very fact we can use this Hub Pages Forum to discuss these matters means the changes are on the way.

That is an excellent outlook for the few who are along the lines of which you speak. What of those college graduates who have spent years looking into and evaluating religion and choose to follow one?

Simply having Islam go through a reformation to say people have a right NOT to be Muslim, so that they give up their right to kill those who won't convert or submit to Shariah law, stop killing Buddhists, Hindus, and Christian neighbors, no longer kill those in their midst who convert to atheism and the problem is pretty much solved.

Tamara I am absolutely unaware of that version of Islam. As per the authentic sources, there is a strict NO to all those inhuman activities rather the one who indulges will no longer remain a Muslim.

The problem is that Sunni and Shia regularly kill each other declaring the other infidels, as well as both groups killing Sufi and Almadiyya Muslims - including the British Muslim who wished everyone a happy Easter and was killed for doing so

Tamara. I think those incidences need to be looked with careful consideration, it is not about feuds of two groups, there are more political and social constraints that are a kind of hindrance to know the truth behind.

Stated was belief in 'religion'. Is that a hint? Does religion come before God, god, or gods? I personally am confused when pondering that as an assertion. Religion has meanings.

One it simply is "A pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance". Presumed with the question is this one . . . "The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a "personal" God or gods" or this one . . . "A particular system of faith and worship". Those are offered by Oxford Dictionaries. Maybe nick-picky, but is a beginning.

Puff . .  the second two are gone. They do not and have not existed. What of the first? Frankly for that to have meaning does not mean there must be a metaphysical meaning. For instance science, the NFL, a hobby, the family unit, or even Hubpages can be that supreme importance. So, in essence religion will exist and continue to do so.

However, if that first definition with meaning exists then logic says the middle one has a very high propensity and probability of existing too. Again, that is "A particular system of faith and worship". So, complexity arrives to eliminate religion then faith and worship must be eliminated along with a supreme importance of some entity or something. An entity is a thing, therefore we each are some-thing. As entities we are a supreme importance for instance a parent to children and we each have supreme important entities. Nature comes to mind to provide for food.

So, we go around the circle back to the beginning where religion began as an ordered system of beliefs with an authority . . .

As this situation continues to develop, this is how I see the spiritual transformation of the world happening:

    1) The various religions across the globe will continue to diminish over the next few decades as followers realize the manipulative, divisive purpose of ALL of them - and are shaken awake. one. at. a. time.

    2) Divisions between religious people and non-religious people will deepen; and persecution probably sets in - even in previously accepting places, such as the US (actually kind of happening, now) - as people who are 'sure' about the existence of a god are more and more shunned by the growing majority - while believers are constantly 'proven wrong' and made fun of by equally-manipulated secular/spiritual know-it-alls.

    3) Three to five decades from now, Science will prove the discovery of the definitive existence of 'soul energy' within Human Beings - a discovery that finally unites and transforms the world. Previously secular 'experts' team up with Theology, History and Language experts, etc., to literally gut and disect the religious holy books of the world in search of 'the spiritual common denomenator' among them. (This process will 'officially' debunk many relgious-specific beliefs, while proving others).

    4) Humanity slowly begins to embrace the general concept that humans are an extention of Universal Consciousness (God), each having an individual life experience. Ie: we are spiritual beings having a human existence - not the other way around.

This will be much easier for all peoples to accept decades from now - after no 'Savior' arrives on the edge of this apocalyptic time; and after no 'Satan' takes over the world: all of these things will be much easier for people to accept.

If Science were to prove something like the existence of an internal 'soul' now - all kinds of religious hotheads would be saying, 'I told you so!'; and the world would fall into utter destruction as the religious RIGHT feels totally justified in cleansing the world of 'evil'.

A transformation like that is tricky. But, that is where the real battle is - in the minds of mankind.

It is a personal choice whether we believe in a religion or not. Even if we are born in a family practicing a certain religion, we still can exercise a choice to follow it or not, or to follow a different one. The fact is that our world can become a better place to live in if we all want it to become whether we believe in a religion or not.

If we evolve our consciousness to a higher level, definitely the collective consciousness of people will also evolve leading to a better society. This can only be achieved by acting on the wisdom of our conscience. We all possess it but ironically we don't listen to what our conscience says.

When we follow the dictates of our conscience, we practice spirituality. And, as a matter of fact, spirituality is an integral part of any religion. But it is a pity that we ignore the spirituality and promote different dogmas that makes us intolerant of others, who follow religions other than ours.

An individual whether he or she follows a religion or nor can follow his or her conscience in every situation. This is how we can make our world a better place to live in.

Thanks Javed of giving me a chance to express my views.

To tell you the truth, I don't think it's possible. Throughout human history, religion and the belief in a higher power has been a part of our experience. It is there for a reason and the reason is human necessity. You can debate the positive or negative influences of religion but not it's existence.
I actually wrote a hub called "Imagine World Without Religion?" just to take the devil's advocate position on this issue.
