No people define God .but God has already define his self .people are rejecting who he is. Many are creating their own characters of who he is. The problem is that does not get you anywhere. Nore to the truth. It only delays and distract you while the end is coming .Jesus said many will be on the broad road leading to destruction but only a few will be on the cramp road leading to life. Just as the days of Noah only 8 lives survived the flood waters .
This time more lives saved but with the same outcome many lives gone because they refuse the instructions on surviving into a changed system into a new world. 2Peter 3:13 people are rejecting that the earth will be heavenly as the Lords prayer is taught to us and say" your will on earth as it is in heaven"
and that the earth was created to be inhabited by man .Heaven was not Adams and Eves home, Earth was. That is how we came to be born here they were our ancestors. God clearly says
That the Isaiah 45:18 is clear he is the maker and claims his work .his purpose is to continue life here on it. And he controls that right.
Who will continue to live on it
Psalm 11:29. , they will live forever on it.
Psalm 115:16 The earth he has given to the Sons of men.
The truth is the Heavenly Father determine where we go .we can not
we have no control of adding a day to our life.
We certainly can not say how God feels about other humans because he created us all. And he examines through the heart. No man can do this.
So to conclude either man is listening to God the Father or they are listening to their own opinions , propaganda, other peoples explantions that is not God's truth.
Many will have it wrong and some will have it right
Those some are mocked and scorn for trying to help many learn the truth.
So religion is what many make of it which does not have to be the truth
But a deterrent away from the truth till the end.
What a concept. A man can be completely without influence by others? Unless by miraculous God intervention man has to be taught by other men. So all are constantly doomed to error?
Eric No all are not doomed .the key is following directions given from our Heavenly Father Many people have subsitute their own directions. Not Gods
Gen 6:2 Noah says he did just so.
2Sam 5:25 David did
Ex 40:16 Moses did
They followed instructions
Tim it is very good you touch on this point. I borrow from some Catholic ideas that help us put into language the idea of restrictions on God. The concept is "ordinary" and "extraordinary". Very simply put ordinary is about what man can do. Extraordinary is what only God can do. We apply it in matters like the "need" to accept Jesus Christ as your savior in order to be brought into the eternal Kingdom of Heaven(God). Oh for sure in the ordinary you must do this. Christian Bibles make that clear. But in the extraordinary God can do whatever God wants. Ordinary - this is what we must do. Extraordinary - this is what God can do. Definitions set boundaries for man, not limitations on God.
I have many friends right here on HP that quote the Bible as an instruction and law. It is very normal. But they take those instructions and somehow twist them into instructions for God.
Personally I take the religion centered around the Holy Bible. In that Bible I find the gist of the New Testament as telling us that God is Love. Now there are a gazillion definitions for love that is part of the reason for my belief. It is like the concept of love is infinity. It goes like this; "God is Love, son, so how many zeros are in the number infinity?" Because of the vastness of love, like God, there are really no definitions. But in my faith we can give them some attributes as found in 1 Corinthians 13. There we find attributes of love that are the same as for God.
Perhaps not a definition but something we can wrap our minds around and celebrate.
Yes, it would limit God. The Saints tell you that you cannot describe or express the Absolute, but they still use words. All of them..
Words can be compared, perhaps, to the protocols, in a workforce. We do a better job if we use them and they offer guidance and make us safe. Still, they do not define what we have to do, or even suggests the final product.
I am not one of those to shy away from scriptures. They have their uses and can definitely inspire us; awaken the Heart. Still, the experience would be practical, mystical and personal to you. God is limitless, and there is a school of thought which says: 'Not this, not that.'
But yes, all religions have a series of guidelines which do comfort and give solace to millions. Since the Heart of the law is Love, why should we challenge anyone? Let us strive to do our best. This is all that is required. Grace in its own time, will teach us the rest.

Without using specific examples of religion tell me how you define religion.Although this question has been asked before, many answers I have seen were from the perspectives and point of views of specific religions. I'm looking for a more general definition or characteristics.

I find most people are clueless. They say they are atheist, but can't properly form an argument as to WHY, or they say they are agnostic, with zero clue as to WHAT that is.Ignorance, above all, is our weakness. Not religion. Although ignorance and religion are good bedfellows.

Why are so many hubbers so hostile towards Christianity and religion in general? The mysteries of life's meaning and what happens to us after we die have led people to develop supernatural belief systems since the dawn of man. Religion provides the assurance that life is not merely an abitrary...
