We're human. We'll find something to go to war over. It kinda seems to be in our nature.

Religion can be lovely or it can be downright ugly. Either way, it's not going anywhere.

Yes, its true that humans cause conflicts, but don't they do so (in reference to this question) quoting religion as being the motivation in most cases? Hence, do we need religion? Are the cons of not having religion more than the pros of having it?

Would people turn bad with no religion? Is it not true that bad people exist, even with religion? What difference would it make really?

Thank your Rahat and Kelley for answering this question!!

we don't need any religion, what we need is unity. human minds are so critical and aggressive, backed up with PRIDE, causing conflicts and disunity. try to dig up the history of the formation of different religions, you'll find out that the people who created such group tried to discredit the beliefs of the other. therefore, created conflict and misunderstanding. we only have 1bible but why are there lots of interpretations of it? many even do debates about their belief and everybody claims that they are the TRUTH! of course, others will defend their faith and negate the TRUTH that others claim because the TRUTH belongs to them. thats the conflict. since our generation has already accomodated many religions and denominations, what we can do is to seek God and have a personal relationship with him. unity starts within, from yourself alone. humility, respect and love is the key to fight conflicts in beliefs.

All religions teach people to do good, but those who preach religions and those who practice them may have a different agenda, and misinterpret segments of the religion to their advantage, and thus the start of wars and conflicts.

Religion, in a number of cases that I know of, provide a peace of mind to many people, and to those who seek solace at times of sorrow or depression.

Goodness comes from usage and good practice of religious beliefs, but unfortunately, through greed of either wealth or power will lead to bad practices, and thus using religion as an excuse to cause havoc and destruction, as what can be see through the media.

It is a very sad situation of what is happening to alot of countries because of this.

Many many people have asked that question, some have even found the right answer. Firstly, all religions teach salvation and by doing so they automatically raise their own belife system above all others.

I hear someone saying that they are all there for good to be accomplished but if this was so then they should all be united not divided.

Interestingly the Bible identifies true religion from false for all that would like to know - Matt 7:20-21 and any reader can discern this with great clarity. Happily it also makes known that only false religion, which it identifies as Babylon the Great will be destroyed by the wild beast, namely, the political element of our day. Revelation chapters 17&18.

Lord knows the amount of individuals and groups that are sick of religions medling in all the affairs under the sun that it should not. Religion meddles in affairs it should not bot social and political! False religions often teach untruths and religous error and those following them do the same. If then a blind Guide leads a blind man both will fall into the pit.

Very soon all false religion will be removed along with all those who do not know God and who do not want to submit to his prefect law of love or be a part of His kingdom (kings domain) arrangement.

As for the question; "Do we require it?" the answer is YES, True reiligion that is, That's easy to understand because the author of the Bible is a God of Love. Love is the the laws fulfilment. If all people treated each other compassionately and with love there would be absolutely no reason to continue making arbitrary laws to govern us. We would do unto others as we would like them to do unto us and we would be better caretakers of our earthly home.

Religion is just the foundation on which nearly all conflicts are based. The are other foundations, race, sexual preference, intelligence, etc. that spur conflicts but ultimately it is US that causes the issue's. In the end it really is only a handful that create conflicts, the rest of us just want to live our lives the way we want to live them, but those with money and power will always find away to make something into a conflict.

Religion does not cause conflict, sinful men do. Let's be honest here atheism/humanism/ communism have killed more in this past century then any religion you can think of. But I digress, All religions are not the same they differ on almost everything, but some do have a gain of truth, but only one can be right.  I heard this quote awhile ago “Religion is man's of reaching God, Jesus Christ is God's way of reaching man.” Not just any Jesus, Jesus Christ Creator, Lord, and Saviour. Good question.

You've probably heard the saying, "Guns don't kill people, people do."

The same applies to religion. Religion doesn't cause the conflicts -- religions typically promote peace -- but some of the adherents of religion use it to justify their own violent agendas.

Do we need it? I'm not religious, and that lack doesn't make me unhappy. For me, that's the answer. I have friends and family who would be desperately unhappy without their faith. Ultimately, it all depends on the person.

lets be honest here.. Some religions do promote violence. its a way to get into Paradise.. that said... I believe that most religious people are decent folk.  some are led into violence by men who use religion as a tool for power.     God says suffer not ..." insert victim to be killed" to live.

we have alot of bloody centurys of religious conflict in the West and Middle east.   but its always been the corrupt, power hungry men who used it as a tool to gain more power and wealth.

and yes I do believe people need some sort of Belief structure in their lives.  whether its the Christian God, Shiva, Allah, Gitche Manito, or Budha. or whatever.. some use science to replace it, others Enviromentalism.  " Mother Earth" .

Humans have a need to make order out of the chaos around them.  whether any of it is true is beyond me.  but Faith is what matters in Belief.

and as long as there are people, there will be conflict.  whether its verbal or physical.   Most people cant cooperate it has to be all or nothing.

I Kind of agree with both sides of this argument. here is what I think

First of all I am religious.

People cause the problems when they don't know their religion. Many people who have been in one religion for years still don't know how to handle it. They mis-quote verses to make their thoughts, and beliefs right.

ultimately, we are the ones who cause the problems because of our ignorance...

Another thing that causes problems is untactful people who down everyone else who doesn't have religion, or their religion. They blurt out things that are hurtful. They really have no tact at all...

    Follow Me...

If we deeply study about every religion, the main theme of all is to be a wise people. I think god is only one but we called him in different name for example, Indians call chawal to rice and chinese say bhat. But rice, chawal and bhat all are the same. Therefore we should understand that god is only one but we pray him through different titles due to our culture. Therefore we must respect every regions try to bridge the gap between different religious people.

Religion was the only thing the world had to offer for a long time and was constricted to the culture itself and often controlled by the leaders of that society or government. But today we are the fortunate souls who get to live within the INFORMATION AGE, where the truth and the deepest bits of wisdom we have to offer the world is free flow for everyone, no longer constricted by a religious foundation, its free, its simple and its inspiring. Doesn't it make sense now to see that maybe through this huge technological accomplishment of the internet, something else was born? Knowledge and wisdom free flowing, people starting to witness the truths about the world, people asking questions, people looking for change = EVOLUTION. Now is the time we actually have a shot to step out of the controlling society we are born into. We can know better!

Imagine two groups of monkeys fighting it out in the jungle. One group is only fighting for food and territory but the other is fighting for the great monkey in the sky who made all monkeys in his own image.
Well, the religious monkeys will win, won't they? They are fighting for the glory of the great monkey, death and injury don't matter to them in fact they embrace it.
Within three generations, all non-religious monkeys are wiped out. Only religious monkeys remain.
But it doesn't stop there, the victorious religious tribes of monkeys examine themselves and hunt out the soft "heretic" monkeys - those who believe in a variations of the monkey god. These monkeys are hanged, have their legs broken, are deprived of food and protection or are burned at the stake in the name of the great monkey god of gods.
Within three generations, there are no non-conformist god-monkeys left.
One day soon, when scientists discover the violence gene, they will find a religion gene firmly stuck to it.

If I recall correctly the word  religion comes from the latin word "religio" which means to realign.  The way I see it there is no need for a religion.

People just need to understand that we all will take a birth, get old and die.  All humans will need food, water, air, shelter and peace of being in the world.

The rest is a matter of ego and personal perference, this is on a physical level.

The spirituall answer is we are souls on a journey through time and space only the sould will exist for ever, the body will perish so there still is no need for a religion or confilcts. People just need to learn how to share.

Your questions are rather simplistic. The first question makes a powerful assumption that religion is the cause of many conflicts which should be challenged.

True religious conflicts are rare. Wars are more commonly fought over control of territory and resources, and security of trade routes regarding these. In the case of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the true cause is territory not religion. For centuries, Jewish communities existed peacefully in Muslim and Christian countries. It was not until the displacement of the Jews in Europe during WW2, the subsequent migration to Palestine, and the proclamation of the State of Israel that conflict between Zionist Jews and Muslim Arabs began. Fundamentally, Jews and Muslims (and Christians too) have much in common, and for the majority of history have lived in peace together.

Your second question then suggests that religion only exists to justify wars, which overlooks what is actually does. Religion provides systems which try to explain life and the world around us, and to give context to individual lives. People do not need religion, but many find it gives meaning to their lives, and can be a source of great comfort. Even those who are not religious can see that the morality brought by religion benefits mankind, and there are many charitable works inspired by religious beliefs that are clearly good. On balance, religion is a positive force in the world, and it would be wrong to blame it for other things that mankind has done.

Religion is also an ideology where people adhere into, believe into, and serves as their guiding framework in their lives. I believe that like an ideology, religion may in some way, at a certain epoch of history, have inflicted conflict, and even death to many, in order to satisfy a much greater cause. the Crusaders for one, have killed thousands of Pagan, the Kingdom of Israel, in Moses' and Joshua's time, have killed thousands of people and hundreds of kings, in their pursuit for the promise land. So, is religion the cause of conflict? My answer is yes, history and the holy bible (old testament) prove this. My only problem is are we going to let history repeat itself? To make religion as the sole reason on why a country could do offensives against another weak country, in the name of religion? Can we make the trade of firearms among countries, and the cuddling of nuclear weapons justified in the name of religion? Religion is an ideology. And ideology excuses no one if it has to implemented, even our own lives. History may repeat itself, that is true. However, while the first is tragic, the second one may be farce.

Religion makes us believe in at least something. Even if someone says that they believe in no god, they still believe it. And religion is about belief and faith in your cause. Conflict happens because we all endevour to be right, but in the sense that no one can make you believe something more powerfully than yourself, we will always be fighting over something.
Or something along those lines... if that made sense.. smile

I do believe that we require religion. I am reading a great book right now "Professional Ethics in Criminal Justice- Being Ethical When No One is Looking" by Jay S. Albanese (second edition) You don't have to be in criminal justice to read this book, and it isn't even just about professional ethics- its about ethics to live by for your life. If you research the history of ethics, you would be hard pressed to find any if at all, code of laws and ethics that did not have a foundation in some religious belief. Religion doesn't cause so many conflicts as those that deny the true religion. The most bloody wars were started by communistic countries that had banned Christianity and others faiths. Do some research on your question- look up the wars, and research ethics and laws and how they were made.

You need religion if you think you do. Think of people who say that atheists are amoral because they don't follow some higher power. Would you want those idiots making their own moral judgments, or would you rather they follow some sort of guide? Other people find the same meaning in the Bible that atheists do in their life's work or in their loved ones.

Some people need it and some people don't.

But it's not really religion that causes conflict, it's stupid people who use religion as an excuse to pick a fight with someone that rubs them the wrong way.

Edit: Spiderpam- A basic theology concept is that NO religion can be right, because religion is only man's UNDERSTANDING of God. To believe that any religion is RIGHT is to disrespect Him by assuming that you're capable of capturing his entire essence in a single text. The first step towards understanding God is to admit that man is inherently incapable of fully understanding Him.

I have asked humanity, "each time we desire or fight for our freedom of religion, equity etc do we truly desire such freedom for other?" The answer will help to explain why men bring conflict in the name of religion. Religion may not be the cause of conflict but men want to speak and be heard without give others the same freedom. Thereby the fail to do unto other as they want unto themselves. Yet, if those that belief in God will fight or be uncertain of the path and ways to worship God, then are they justified to blame an atheist? That why I recommend that humanity read my book, "it is time we truly know why Jesus wept" by N. K. David. The book is available online stores worldwide. It is truly time and the time have to come because men fail to learn from history.

I do think the best way to answer the question is subjectively and not universally. Personally, I don't need religion and I don't like it. It is like saying I need Harry Potter. Religion doesn't feed anyone or do anything practical for anyone. It is dogmatic and continues the on going rationalization of subjugation of others. I also don't believe that there is a real conflict between religion and science for the simple fact religion knows it can't feed anyone. It can't house anyone. It can't solve the problems that we are confronted with. It is a cult. It creates problems and divisions and makes people fight emotionally rather than rationally. I am glad I haven't been programmed into the dogma. The down side of science is that it doesn't offer the false hope many require to live. And there are just as many evil geniuses to contend with. Personally I like reality and honesty and not myth and lies. It is a matter of preference. The other thing thing that religion and science have in common is that both believe that something came out of nothing. It is the old argument we all had in junior high when we were first taught evolution. The big words in the argument is contingent and noncontingent existence. The junior high argument is "well who created the monkey. Ok, well who created god." So we both believe in something out of nothing, be honest. I think there is nothing more arrogant than saying that you know as a fact that there is a god. I will tell you, I know and believe 100% that there is no god, especially the god conceived by human beings.

I think it causes conflicts because 1.) sometimes people tend to want to be in complete control over their own environment and when religion is introduced into their "world" they loose that sense of control.  2.) Another reason is because their are so many different belief systems that the components of each one simply conflict with one another.  3.) Also, their will always be the conflict of is there truly a God, or is all this just a grand illusion.

I do think that religion of any sort is important because our psyche needs a "higher power" for comfort.  Without that comfort and guidance the mentally ill, for example, would be completely lost.  The world suicide rate would multiply exponentially.  I also believe that like everything, we have to keep even religion in perspective, a "common sense" approach in order to have a happy medium.  Without a happy medium a person can go overboard with the pushy-preachy attitude that also causes arguments.  To have this attitude, one pushes everyone around them away.  As with everything, their has got to be a happy medium, give and take, head in the sky with feet on the ground, or you simply cannot be a well rounded and balanced person.

Thank you for asking this awesome question.  This one really makes a person stop and think.  Keep up the awesome work.

The most deadly wars have been fought over religion. The result is  group-ism and lots of bitterness. I dont think we need religion at all. Religion is supposed to preach peace, love, selflessness and togetherness. What use it is of if it ends up in a bloodshed in the name of God. There is no religion that preaches that killing innocent people is not a sin. But if they feel someone is a threat to their god or religion, there is no limit for the bloodshed!
I believe humanity is the biggest religion and there is no religion above it.

I never needed religion, but I believe it comforts many and they may actually need it.

I think religion is often used as an excuse for violence, but some other excuse would have been found if religion were not available.

That some violence has been done purely because of religion is undeniable, but much good has also been done and I like to think it at least balances.   I question why we couldn't do the same good  without religion, but if it helps push, I'm happy.

Certainly trying to get rid of religion would cause tremendous evil and violence, so I couldn't support that no matter what else is or is not true.

Someday, people may learn to live without it.  Let them learn that, if they will at all, in their own good time.

Someone below said ethics is based on religion - how do they know religion didn't come from ethics?

Pure religion is defined for us in The Bible. It can be found in the Book of James. Religion today is defined on what church denomination one attends. Religion doesn't save a person it is Jesus Christ that saves a person from their sins through the process of being save, and baptized for the remission of sins.

Because religion (and politics) are both about institutes concerned with social organisation and control.

They both make use of our deep desire to search and find the truth about ourselves and the universe.

Through a process of conditioning we are given all kinds of ideas and concepts about this or that being "the truth". And the reason we accept these finds it source in our need for security. because we our not aware of the truth which lies behind our existance.

Once we have accepted all these concepts and ideas about ourselves and the reality we live in, we identify ourselves with them.

Once we identified ourselves with them, we feel the need to protect them, because we think we have to defend ourselves.

Every insult, doubt or questioning about everything we have ourselves identified with, is wrongly seen and interpreted as an attack from the "outside".

This is a reaction out of fear and out of ignorance about our real nature, being ourselves expressions of the Devine truth.

Religiosity is a personal issue, which arises from our awe and astonisment of our own existance, which we witness through our conscious.

Therefore, religiosity, is something which has to and can only be lived as a lively experience and expression of life itself.

And life in all its potential, can hardly be enchained or bound in a set of social rules to live by.

Live according to that which feels to you as being good. Simply look into your heart to feel it. Free yourself of all what they told you, whatever it was, or might be, so that you finally can start living life the way it was meant.
