in acts the holy spirit descended upon the 12 and they all spake with tongues, at the same time, Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the SPIRIT gave them utterance".
What a bunch of inaudible garble that must have been. 12 people all speaking at the same time. Put yourself in a room and try to listen to all the voices and you get a jumble of noise.
Acts 2:5 "And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of EVERY NATION under heaven".
Gods holy spirit interpreted the heavenly language of tongues because it was said
Acts 2:6 "....confounded, because that every man HEARD them speak in his own language".
Verses 9-11 tell of 16 different languages for only 12 men to speak.
Again the crowd was astonished
Acts 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Acts 2:8 "And how HEAR we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born"?
They marvelled at how each of the 12 knew so many languages fluently.
Acts 2:13 "Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine".
If they were speaking in fluent earthly languages how could it be said they are full of new wine? Wouldn't it be of more common sense to say "wow thats amazing how they speak in so many earthly dialects".
There must always be an interpreter to tongues and on this new event, the arrival of the holy ghost, GOD INTERPRETED, according to the biblical pattern set forth in the word of god.
Tongues is the spirit speaking, its not an earthly language at all. Tongues, exercises our faith and communicates what we do not know how to pray for. We have the spirit of god inside us is it so hard to imagine that it should also have a voice to our benefit?
This is the difference between pentecostalism and other denominations. To speak in tongues requires that one step out in faith and utter the not understood words and practice them. Paul sets out a pattern in 1 corinthians 12.
1 Corinthians 13:1 "Though I speak with the tongues of men AND OF ANGELS, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal".
I am a pentecostal and i speak in tongues. I will never be detered from believing otherwise. When i feel weak or spiritually tired the gift of tongues is an excellent edifier, and a weapon against temptations.
