is it so hard to admit that when you die, it's over.

i get a kick out of how scared of death religious people are. they want everyone to believe in heaven and hell so that death is so much nicer .

Apparently it must be because why would folks have to invent heaven, hell, reincarnation, etc?

My mom is not religious at all and she is 81 years old - and she is still terrified of dying.

I always think though that the people I've known that go 'gracefully' into death or death without fear are people who live(d) their life with grace while they were with us and who were really, truly sound people, meaning they did whatever they could to make the world a better place and were ultimately happy with their lives.

I think that is the key - if you are happy with your life, you will not need to 'invent' places to go or hereafter scenarios - and why anyway?  Isn't it all about living today?

You say, "when you die, it's over". How on earth do you know for sure that it's over?

When you are in dreamless, deep sleep, you don't know anything that's happening around you. Does it mean that everything is over when you sleep deep?

I totally agree with nightwork4 here.

Religious people will tell you it's all about their love of god but really its all about them being unable to accept that when they die - that 's it - end of story.

They cannot believe in a Universe that hasn't got them in it (or one that 's not going to miss them when they've gone).

The funny thing is that most writers in the old testament - when pontificating on the silence of the grave - describe death in much the same way as atheists.

ps akirchner - I would have clicked on your green box 20 times if I'd been allowed.

What's over?  What's over when we die, is the question I want an answer to.

People that know nothing about Death or the here after, seem to be the "most" knowledgeable. To die and find out is foolish.
Like an insurance rather be covered. than find out you were not under the cover.
Christs blood that covers sins, rather be under his blood than under your own.

Only a fool could deny this.

Morson: you state it's illogical to believe it's over when you die. surely you jest. at least i hope you are. the rest of what you said actually sounds illogical.
dying is a part of living. there is no need to pretend we are going to heaven or hell or wherever but rather it is logical, sensible and sane to understand that we are just creature, created by accident who have evolved into what we are today.
we can love life, love others but when death comes, it's exactly that .death. pretty simple and accurate in my eyes but.....

Jesus spoke of us being asleep in death until the resurrection, so how one can believe heaven is for us is beyond me.  Also Noah and his family survived the destruction of an earthly, man made system, right here on earth, no rapture.  I believe we are in a deep coma until we are woke up, no zombies either.

It's not over, its actually the beginning. If you think that it's over, then first think about how we got here and how matter could have just popped out of absolutely nothing. I don't see how it's possible, seeing that the universe is restricted to space and time - making it basically impossible for the universe to be around for infinite time.

I'd like to pose that question to spirits who dwell in haunted places, commonly called ghosts.  I wonder what they would say if they had a chance to come back.

To Wesman Todd Shaw : you asked a very good question "what is over when we die?". I wonder why did you get so many minuses. But you have to take that in consideration when discussing afterlife. So what is over: conscious existence? personality with all its traits? memories? any kind of existence? etc.
Well two things are for sure:
    1. that at least something is over - you are not living in your body anymore.
    2. Some kind of existence is still there, because according to what we know from science energy changes forms, not vanishes into nothingness.
Everything beyond that is a matter of belief, no matter it's a belief in heaven, hell, reincarnation, nothingness or whatever. And in my opinion it's normal to be scared and if you have something that comforts you - good!

Absolutely it is hard to admit that when you die, it is over. My comatose experience led me to believe that it is far from over when we pass-on (maybe I should say when we are brain-dead)...

i am a religious person and i have entertained the notion of there being nothing beyond death.  the only reason i believe otherwise to be true is that i have witnessed too much not to believe that there is more beyond physical existance.  when we transition, we enter a spiritual existance dependant on our belief system.
