Respect means being taken seriously. If someone is being demeaned or patronized, they are not respected. When we treat a person as though they have lesser importance than someone else because of their situation or status in life we don't respect them. We need to be willing to show appreciation or consideration to everyone, including those we know really well. Often the ones we love get the brunt of our disrespect because we know all their faults (as well as their strengths) and we think we have the right to expose these in them. We need to offer everyone the respect they deserve whether life circumstances (or even bad choices) has put them in what we think is a "lesser" place than us. Life can change very quickly and we might be in their position one day. Perhaps respect fits in with the saying, "Do unto others what you'd have them do to you." If we treat others the way we want to be treated, then we can't go wrong.
