The New Testament contains numerous requirements that must be met before salvation is granted. An example comes from this seldom read verse in John Chapter 6 that refers to the necessity of participating in Holy Communion ceremonies:Verse 53 "Jesus answered: I tell you for certain that you won't live unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man."
Tragically some ministers try to deceive the members of their churches by telling them that salvation comes through only repeating a 10 word "sinner's prayer",regardless of what state of sobriety they may be in at the time.
ALL verses in the New Testament must be read to gain a full understanding of Christianity.Pulling 25 words in two verses in one chapter of one book which contain words from a man who was not one of Jesus' Disciples which occurs in Romans 10:9,obviously won't do you much good unless you're interested in the most shallow and superficial view of the faith.
The most common and at the same time outrageous example of verse skimming occurs when people quote John 3:16 as the verse containing the only instruction necessary to obtain salvation.Unfortunately to find verse 16 they have to skim over the essential verses 3-7 which totally modify verse 16 because they specify the two types of baptisms that Jesus taught are requirements for salvation.
John 3:3-7 (New King James Version)
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
