What are Chakras (Part-1)

Chakras

The word ‘Chakra’ has its origin in Sanskrit language and means ‘wheel’. Although a human body is said to have over 80,000 chakras (minor and major), only seven are considered to be primary Chakras or ‘energy centers’. These chakras are located along the central vertical axis of our spine and open towards the front of the body like a blossom. These circular energy centers are constantly rotating, receiving and radiating energy; each one of them is connected with the spine by a narrow stem. Normally these chakras extend about four inches in all directions but as the spiritual awakening advances, these chakras extend further from the body, frequency vibrations increase and their corresponding colors become clearer and brighter.

In my opinion, the best way to understand the functioning of these seven chakras would be with the help of a visual rather than a boring tutorial in print. I have uploaded a video which, beautifully and mesmerizingly, reveals the mystical world existing inside our own physical self.

Thx for visiting. Hugs.

Amazing. How beautiful. Thank you for posting this video, it's wonderful.

When I was 34 I had a spontaneous kundalini experience. It was very destabilizing and disorienting. I did not know what it was or why it happened, and spent years searching for an answer. I went back to college about a year after it and wrote an academic thesis entitled, "Sex, Magic, & Transformation: Three Patterns of Gendered Polarity in the Modern West." (Now there's a second chakra title for you!) I still did not know about kundalini or the chakras, but I was drawn to that structure--like those poor people in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" who kept making replicas of Devil's Mountain out of mashed potatos! LOL!

Anyway, over the years I've had such strange things happen to me that concern this topic. I've woken up to Sanskrit chants I don't know! (Om deva shanti, shanti deva shanti, shanti shanti shanti was one of them.)

One morning I work up with a single word whispered in my ear, "Satchidananda." So then I was off on a search for what does satchidananda mean????? I have a statue of Shiva at my desk but I am not a Hindu person. I do not practice yoga. Honestly, I think it's very odd. But I will tell you it has been a driving force in my life. it is always there, in the background or foreground. It sent me to school, it got me thinking, it got me praying, it got me meditating and reading.

Looking back, I think it was kind of like a 'reset' button. Like something just hit my 'reset' button when I was 34. I'm 55 now.

Anyway, I don't talk about it much because it sounds insane and people here don't really want to hear it, plus, I don't need to anymore. Recently I discovered kirtan chants and they help calm me and keep me properly focused.

Pretty weird, huh? Thank you for this. It's lovely.

Your written knowledge, combined with the video, on the chakra theory made this a very relaxing experience.

Pam: At least I don't call that insane. You are so much spiritually evolved that I feel very small in explaining the 'karmic cycle' we all undergo. I strongly believe in past lives. I really got shivers down my spine as I read the name of 'Sachidananda' in your comment. I'm sure you must have already done the research and found out that he is an enlightened soul / saint who has a very large following in India. He is said to have shown the 'right path' to milliions all over the world. You're truly blessed to have heard his name in your sleep. I'm an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and I don't know since when. I seemed to know only Him since the day I was born. Our scriptures say that our love or affinity for a particular deity is all connected to our past karma. You get drawn to a deity (Hinduism speaks of not one but many forms of God) and you don't realize the reason for that. We are not supposed to have an answer for everything. I guess that's what is called being 'born with a clean slate'. However, in the course of this long journey through one life after the other, our spirit, sometimes suddenly, wakes up to a Higher calling and we need to respond to the call. The whispers you heard were probably intended to convey a message to you.."You need to recognize your self (your Higher Self) and follow a path which has been ordained for you." I'm sure you already have discovered that long time back. (Hugs)

Nancy's Niche: I am so glad you liked the video. I fell in love with it when I saw it the first time and immediately decided to share it with as many people as possible.

Thx for watching it.

Well thank you for being so kind about it. I finally just accepted it, and after all these years I think, as you say, that some things we just aren't meant to get any explanation for, it's on a 'need to know' basis! I think we are drawn to the spiritual path we need, not the one that is most familiar. And I do believe that enlightened souls who come back to do work with the rest of us can send out messages--maybe I got lucky and had my inner 'radio' on! Who knows! Life is never boring, is it?

I am not familiar with this topic, not sure whether it is connected to Mudras? Can you suggest me a good book to read it, would love to understand them.

anjalichugh profile image

anjalichugh 7 years ago from New York Author

Pam: Life is full of surprises but one thing is evident....you have traveled a long way on the spiritual path. God really loves you. Trust me. Thx for coming back.

cgull8m: 'Mudra' basically refers to (different) ways in which we keep / place our hands during meditation. Chakras, on the contrary, are the energy centers inside the body which channelize the flow of energy in and out of our 'aura' (which I'll take up in forthcoming hubs). So you see the difference. Although, during the process of 'opening the blocked chakras' (in my next hub), we may use 'mudras' to facilitate meditative posture but that is all the connection is limited to. Regarding the books on this subject, I would suggest to watch the video (uploaded here) many times so that you get a basic idea of what this is all about and how our awakening is connected with chakras. After you get a hang of it, you can pick up any book from Amazon (or other online stores) preferably by Indian authors as their philosophy is deep rooted and easy to understand. I would be uploading more videos in my coming hubs which will make this subject clearer.

Thx for reading and watching.

Anjali- Yesterday I listened to this video and was having problems while commenting hence it came blank. You can deny the above comment.

Actually I did get exposed to Chakras when I was about 15 from my grand father who used to practice meditation and pranayama. He awakened kundalini from my mooladhara chakra. Then later I learned reiki and pranic healing but unfortunately both I don't practice now. But while I was learning my reiki master mentioned that I do have a lot of potential but since it came easily I didn't appreciate it that much hence I didn't persevere with it after my college reopened. You are doing a great job enlightening us with such positive hubs and I am sure it is just a matter of time before your score will touch hundred like laila's.

Thumbs up for fantastic hubs.

CW: You are definitely blessed, as I had told you once before. You should try to improve upon what you already have. You are fortunate to have Kundalini awakened at such an early age. People really have to sweat it out to get to that stage. Please don't let it to go in vain. Regarding scores, I don't have a slightest idea how to reach a 100. I have still not been able to understand the factors which are important for the hubber score to shoot up. Can you offer some tips? Thx very much for appreciating.

Anjali- In my class there was a lady who had come from Sydney (Australia) to learn and she is practicing there now. Sometimes when we just learn something during summer vacations we aren't really serious about it. I will have to again take the course again if I need to practice it seriously since it is more than 6 years back that I attended those courses. Nowadays I have very little time. I have to get up early to cook lunch then again come home to make dinner. Life does change a lot after marriage.

Regarding 100 score I feel you have excellent writing skills and the page views will increase over a period of time. Usually I have seen those hubbers who have got 100 have been here for more than 6 months at least. I don't have any tips but maybe you can find out some tips from these hubs. Here are some hubs mentioning about high hub scores:

CW: I'm grateful for the effort you took to provide me with necessary info. Thx.

Regarding practicing meditation etc I know what life must be for you right now. Things do change after marriage. As we say in India your matrimonial home is supposed to be your 'Karma Bhumi' now and it's going to be that for a long time. So it does not matter if you don't get time for spiritual things for another few years. You are still doing what you're supposed to and that itself is considered at par with devotion to God. You know these things more than I do. God bless you.

If you find even 1/2 hr daily to practice what all is mentioned in this series, I can guarantee that your life will change....for better. :) Thx very much for coming back.

Hi Anjali, I can't believe it. You have diversified your activities to such a difficult field of knowledge. I got convinced of your talent and long back commented on one of your hubs that very soon you'll excel as a good writer and be on top (100 score) atleast here on hubpages. Since i've already touched the magic figure, I'll request you to read some of my hubs written about hub and hubber score to improve your hubber score. However, reaching on top is easy but staying there is difficult.

Premsingh: You've always been generous and encouraging and for that I'm really grateful. As I mentioned earlier, you were in a way instrumental in pulling me to the Hubpages as the first ever blog / hub I read about 'money making' was yours. I've to be indebted to be you for making me stick to HP. Regarding the scores, the highest I could manage till now was 96 and that was just a few days ago. Staying there, as you said, is a lot difficult than reaching there. I'll certainly go over to the link you suggested. Again..thx very much for being so supportive.
