morality is doing what you know is right even when people tell you otherwise

but religion tells you what to do even when people remind you they are wrong.

take slavery of humans for example or all genocides and raping of conquered people.

Seriously? You consider this to be a valid argument? Can you spell blinders?

Religion is one of the tools we use in society to justify behavior patterns.  It isn't the only tool, nor has it been the preferred tool for enslavement, death due to war and genocide in our life times, if you count the numbers. And, how many holy books outline the manner in which conquered people should be raped?

Sometimes, I wonder if we aren't talking about the problems with the religious simply because we don't want to tackle the real problems in the world. The real problems in ourselves.  It's easier to imagine things being grand if, just, other people would change.

Blaming religion for killing, slavery and rape is the same as blaming red and blue sports shirt manufacturers for violence in sport. The root of the problem lies in the biological imperative we have to compete with "others", not in the (often made up) differences we use to rationalise that behaviour.
