Are addictions a Biological, Psychological, or a Social Issue.

I am researching this topic from a metaphysical aspect.

It seems to me that if addiction was a traditional Biological issue, then ultimately the person who had a addicted father or mother would indeed be addicted or exhibit addictive behaviors.  If that was the case, how can one explain being gay when both the mother and the father were straight in their sexual orientation, would the offspring exhibit homosexual tendancies? (Biological issues present in new borns excluded from example)

If addiction was a psychological issue, this would possibly void the biological and social aspects of addiction, being that there would most likely be a root cause or experience imbedded in the sub-conscious that would create the gateway element of escapist behavior, and allowing a impaired reality to become temporarily accepted via the use of an impairing substance.  Would this Psychological issue not teeter on the spiritual elements as well?

If addiction was a Social Issue, then one would have to assume the environments and external stimuli was to blame, such as advertisements, direct auditory and visual stimuli, recognized persons of influence lending their reputation for the potentially addictable issue etc.

What I am really looking for here, is what the community as a whole feels about addictions, how they feel and why they feel this way.  Is it a weakness? Is it pre-determined? Is it even something you can grow into from the basic stimuli presented around the influential young minds.

I really would like to hear from you, if my questions do not make sense, then by all means, ask, and I will try to clairy.  Please be nice and respectfull when you respond!  Thank you so much!!

I feel addiction is a worthwhile subject, and a very human way to see it in one way is self medication. What comes first, the chicken or the egg. Schizophrenics are sometimes habitual dope smokers, so does smoking dope cause the medical problem or is it a good medicine for schizophrenics that helps their condition.
MMDA, MDA and other ecstacy like drugs change brain chemistry to allow seretonin to affect the mind.the result of seretonin uptake is a peaceful loving and empathetic experience. Is the experience addictive or the drug?
I would like to see some more comments on addiction.

I may be able to add something to a metaphysical perspective on addictions. From my experience in working with reiki over the p[ast ten years I have had the opportunity to work with addictions as part of working with clients.

One particular example is a man who had a cocaine addiction who I worked with for several months until he was confident in my ability to help and trusted me to do only what was in his best interest.

The final session I did with this gentleman lasted for two hours and involved me working in trance whilst the client was semi conscious.

As part of this healing I was able to look backwards to past life issues which were having an impact on the clients behaviour today.

Once I had located the source of the addiction I was able to remove the associated energy and replace it with fresh positive energy.

I appreciate that this may not make a lot of sense outside of the original context but the session produced positive effects for my client and he was no longer addicted.

      Dear friend,

Spiritual research indicates that almost all acts of possession by a ghost, to prime a person for addiction begin in the womb itself. It is less likely for a ghost to begin priming an individual for addiction in their adult phase. The reason for this is, when in an embryo form, a person is at his most vulnerable state. The more the number of impressions of personality defects from previous births that the conceived embodied soul has, the easier it is for the ghosts/subtle bodies of ancestors to attack.

The following is a detailed account of the subtle mechanism of possession in the womb.

Step 1: In the majority of cases, the subtle body of the ancestor / ghost attacks the person in the mother’s womb at the embryonic stage. Even prior to conception, at the time of intercourse itself, the subtle body of ancestor enters the body of the mother through her vagina and it impregnates the entire uterus with black energy.

The spermatozoon uniting with the ovum is also covered with black energy. This impact is minimised with increase in spiritual level, regular spiritual practice and prayer before and if possible even during intercourse. The prayer can be on the following lines:

          *      O God, if today's contact is going to culminate in conception, please protect the conception from any type of ghost attack. Let the conception be sattvik.
          *      Even if the opportunity of praying before and during conception is missed and pregnancy has already happened, the parents can still chant and pray as follows.
          *      O God, grace the baby with impression of chanting when in the womb itself.
          *      The mother can hold her pursed fingers in a nyaas pointing on her navel or spread her palm on her belly and chant with intermittent prayer as described above. This can be continued throughout the pregnancy.
          *      O God, grace the baby with a protective sheath of your divine energy.
          *      O God, let the baby breathe in divine consciousness when it is breathing subtly inside me.

Step 2: Then the subtle body of the ancestor / ghost goes on to spread a network of its strands of black energy in the entire uterus. In this way, the embryo is trapped even before it has grown.

Step 3: During the growth of the embryo, the subtle body of ancestor / ghost interferes at the time of the development of the subtle cells of the mental sheath and sows the seeds of intense thoughts of addiction. Thus the embryo grows with thoughts of addictions.

Step 4: Then the subtle body of the ancestor / ghost attacks the brain cells of the embryo and makes them conducive to imbibe thoughts of addiction.

Step 5: With further growth of the embryo, the subtle body of the ancestor / ghost merges with the embryo’s body and takes complete possession. As a result as mentioned earlier in the article some children develop addictions in their teenage itself.

Just because a departed ancestor has targeted a certain embryo does not mean that he has to wait for 15-20 years as the person comes of age before he can satisfy his cravings. In the meantime, he can possess other descendents thus satisfying his desires for any substance or thing. What the ancestor does by possessing the embryo and creating a black energy centre for addiction is akin to a rich man acquiring apartments, penthouses or villas in various cities across the globe. He may not even visit a certain apartment for years at a stretch. However having it is a facility that gives him easy and ready entry when he needs to use it.

The reason why an addiction in some people starts earlier as opposed to others is that the ghost waits for an opportune time to actively initiate the addiction. This will depend on a number of factors that increase the vulnerability of the person. These factors include:

          *      Reduction in merits
          *      A patch of bad time as per destiny
          *      Decrease in will power due to psychological problems such as difficult life situations, tension, depression etc.

Development of addiction during pregnancy or later due to possession by ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.)

Sometimes, people without strong will power are targeted by common ghosts (demons, devils, negative energies, etc.) during their adulthood. After entering their bodies, ghosts fuel their desire for certain things thus making them addicts. However the majority of addicts (i.e. 70% of them) are affected by the thoughts of addictions in their embryonic state itself.

Over a period of a lifetime, a person who has been possessed and addicted to a substance or a thing may begin to like it or at least find comfort in it. When the person dies he may find himself missing the pleasure of the addiction.

After death, this person himself becomes a ghost and enters the body of the next woman from that generation for the fulfilment of his addiction. This intent to harm another person turns him into a ghost and he gets trapped in a vicious cycle of his addiction for many oh his subsequent descendents' lifetimes. This cycle thus continues generation after generation.

Dear Sir. With all respect, there is not such thinks as reincarnation of souls, even with some believe, it is. The possession by the demons, they are spirits which came from pre-Adamic race. The fallen angels is another issue, they went directly to hell after the fallen Lucifer.
Yes there are curses which can be transmitted from generation to generations (up to 3-4 generation), but not ancestors' souls. They are results of iniquities and sin of ancestors.
Any research cannot prove anything, they are just opinions. My statement is based on the Word of God, the Bible, which came by revelation.

          Dear friend,

With due respect to your regards for the words of God...

I would like to mention here that the contents are based on the visualisation of the facts with the highly developed sixth sense after doing regular spiritual practice for a certain period of time.

Any one who has this vision is able to understand this fact and rather visualise it. the findings are published on the pages of the SpiritualResearchFoundation.org only after confirmation by the spiritual authorities.
May be you can go thro some of the pages for many more details.

But the fact that ancestors souls trouble us is completely true...and so is the addiction caused by ancestors..

Without thinking about it too hard, I think that addictions are social and psychological. But that's a one-off answer. No doubt this will be on my mind for the next few days.

I refer you to the classic book The Textbook of Yoga Psychology by Ramamurti Mishra, M.D.

Ch 4, Page 299 discusses Self-Analysis and Enlightenment.  In this chapter you will discern much about consciousness, awareness, attachment to desires, and the ability to control the mental forces despite the enticing draw of worldly "pleasures."

I wish you luck in your research.

Thanks for the interesting question. I was going to comment but dranjesh blew me away. I'm not making any judgments because anything is possible in this world.

I've been in recovery for 25 years. I guess the ancestral ghost became bored at the AA meetings. Again, I'm not making judgments and this ghost could simply be dormant until I die. Or I may be the culprit.

But what an awful thing to do to my ancestors to come.

I believe that addiction is not always what it seems to be. If someone eats every day we do not say they are addicted to food, and if someone takes a drug daily that does not mean that they are addicted as they may feel they need it to feel well. I feel that the main aspect of addiction is caused by brain chemistry being out of wack, so the addict keeps trying to find a way to feel better and eventually chooses one drug that they think helps.
    Self medication.

Remember that people can be addicted to things other than substances - work, gambling, sex, love, exercise, religion - the list is just about endless.

Addiction is a way to manage anxiety and strong emotions (which generate anxiety when you try to suppress them).

While some people clearly have a biological susceptibility to some substances, and some people clearly have a biological predilection to be anxious, anyone can become addicted to anything under the right circumstances.

A very close friend of mine went into recovery about five years ago, and progressively broke her addictions. In order, she has dealt with addictions to:

    speed and sleeping tablets
    binge eating
activities (every minute of every day full)
work (still a work in progress - she should be taking stress leave right now, but keeps talking herself out of it)

We are all addicts, at different stages of recovery.
