What if we humans are not the most intelligent creature on Earth?

I was just watching a show on the octopus and how they have a great deal of intelligence.

It made me think, what if they or some other unknown creature were more intelligent than humans?

Do you think we humans would feel threatened?

Would some of us want to "take back" our position of #1 on the planet?

Would we try to enslave them?

    Would we share?

I am aware of how smart they are, I also watched a show on it.

As far as them being assmart as us, and taking over the planet... That is kind of an obvious no. Unless we discover some structures in the depths and castles down there, I'm not going to say that they are even close to as smart as us! People think the same thing about dolphins. Who actually do not even come close to us in intelligence.

IF for some reason they were smarter than us, I'd have to say that 1 group or the other would almost definitely get taken out, especially if there is no way to communicate. Unless the smart people who want peace could win out. They would also have to want our territory, or we would want theirs for that to happen.

This question is really hard to answer...

I saw a doco about the baboons in south africa intimidating humans so they could steal their food - they were so clever, they could unlock windows & car doors & raid fridges etc.  they just show their teeth & humans run screaming.
Guess if apes like these outwit humans perhaps they will be seen as a threat

Ah, yes. Planet of the Apes.

Given the state of humankind at this point, I'd say we really aren't very intelligent at all.

      The list is starting:

      octopus
      dolphin
      mice
      apes

Something tells me we are losing ground as an intelligent species....

Can I add hamsters - mine has just broke out of its cage and got away. Ok, it hasn't split the atom, but it must have done something clever(ish) to get out of there.

The list continues to grow, as does my sense of unease at the realisation that we're not in the top five anymore.

I think that humans can't be threatened to the no.1 spot. If we weren't the most intelligent species we would have been taken over by now, as well as that, humans are the only ones that can work out things and create order e.g schools, work.
If the humans were threatened, I think the other species would be killed.

What if we humans are not the most intelligent creature on Earth?

First off, I find this question appalling. Associating "humans" with "creatures" such as animals, is a bit ridiculous.

Yes, humans originally evolved from animals. Those animals came from Earth to begin with, as a part of Nature. However, it doesn't mean that the individual being is a animal.

The thinking that humans are nothing more than animals is absurd. I understand that the actions of many, pretty much, shows an animal-like mentality and does so for a reason. The question is what is the reason? or Why? Answer that and you might find more dishonesty than you can handle.

There isn't any animal on the planet more intelligent than humankind. There never can be a higher intelligence on Earth, otherwise, humankind would be extinct. Do note- I said "never can be a higher intelligence"- that doesn't mean another source couldn't live peacefully being equal in intelligence. wink

seanorjohnposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Wow, you seem to have a bit of a downer on animals. Unless you believe mankind has a soul I can't see why you object to us being compared to animals.

I always assumed dolphins were more intelligent than humans but I am open to considering the merits of the hamster. As far as I am aware no animal has tried to destroy our planet or started a world war. Admittedly they don't score highly on the written word but I am pretty impressed with their practical philosophy.

      1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

It wouldn't make a difference if humans do or do not have a soul.

Intelligence isn't based on a soul and where you go the idea it did, is completely beyond me.
You want to compare animals to other animals. Be my guest. But, degrading humankind only benefits select few.
Well, you just put humans above with this statement alone. Proving my point. And, what you did describe was social issues of humankind, not instinctive issues.
Oh. Okay. I'm grateful I made an impact. hmm

        1. seanorjohn profile image72
seanorjohnposted 12 years agoin reply to this

You haven't proven anything. I just find it bizarre that you think mankind is utterly superior in any way to the animal kingdom. If you are coming from a humanist angle rather than a theological stance, explain why we are inherently superior. Why do you find it "Apalling" and "Degrading" to make such a comparison?

          1. Cagsil profile image70
Cagsilposted 12 years agoin reply to this

Because, Humankind isn't controlled by Nature, like animals.

Animals does not possess the same level of consciousness as humankind does. Everything animals do is reactionary and instinctive, nothing more nothing less.

If you consider Nature "intelligent", then Humankind would not be superior. However, Nature isn't an animal.

We've(humankind) has evolved. It's the mentality and actions, that speak to the opposite. And, yet again, why? Do you know? Or are you chalking it up since it's perceived to be animalistic then it must be an animal? hmm

Edit: on a second note- animals don't have enough intelligence to think about dominating the world? or destroying it? Do you know why? Because, they do not possess the ability to conscious interact with enemies and work toward a common goal.

Cags, that is your main problem. You are a pseudo intellectual. You spout nonsense and do not have any understanding of how you come across. That's why you irritate me so much. You have no self awareness. Most of your posts are filled with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. You always think you are right.  ............................................................................................................................................ Dolphins rule, and let's not rule out the hamsters.

I know I'm not the greatest speller or the most grammar correct type person. And, you're not the first person to point it out. And, yes I am very self aware of my actions.

However, I am more inclined to think that your individual comprehension is lower than your own self awareness. Which, actually isn't good for you. Just to let you know.

I don't want to come across, as you say- more than you realize. And, I'm pretty damn sure you didn't understand that last statement, so if I need to explain it, do let me know.

On a side note- for one who makes claims to my abilities, let me ask you- Did you not like something I said? Did the TRUTH hurt?

You were convicted on your damn words and now you want to prance out, trying to save face? Learn what humility is about? You might just be able to live with yourself.

      being, lifeform, carbon-based unit...

We may not be all that far removed from other...whatevers as we believe.  We may find something that exists or existed that could bring our own benevolence into question.

Humanoids may not have been as intelligent as Cro-Magnons, for example.  Maybe we were just lucky.

I sometimes think humans are lacking in several areas when it comes to intelligence. We assume because a different species does not communicate the same as we do that we are superior to them. As this world's natural occurrences happen, we learn how much we do not know. Who then would be the more intelligent species?
