When we are depressed, should religion console us?

Of course. Turn to God when the times are tough. But also rejoice in prayers when things go great.

I think a relationship with God helps us to find comfort in one who is greater than us or our problems. Then we can find consolation.

I believe that people who have a faith in God will find some comfort.  I used to, when I believed in God.

If you are unable to keep control of yourself then hanging on to religion is better than nothing, you will find many others there who are unable to control themselves, generally unable to deal with life or poorly educated. Of course you will find about the same number of others preying on the unfortunates either financially or to bolster some fragile puffed up ego or the opposite, a totally repressed ego.   There may even be one or two shining lights who actually represent the religion of choice in a reasonably true way, but you should not look for  them in any position of power.
