Updated on January 14, 2016

The Prayer of Jabez - For Success, Power, Protection

Would you like to know an effective prayer that moves the hand of God on your behalf? When it comes to prayer, whether it be a prayer for healing, or a prayer for strength, or a morning prayer, we need a prayer that we know works. The length of the prayer isn't as important as the heart felt words. The Prayer of Jabez is a short but powerful prayer for those who are looking for greater success, influence, power and protection.

So let's see why this is the Jabez Prayer of the faithful and why it is an effective prayer...

Who is Jabez? What is the Jabez Prayer?

Praying in a sorry state

We know very little about Jabez, except that he was more honorable than his brethren, and that he was called Jabez because his mother bore him in sorrow.

Jabez prayer is listed in the Bible in 1 Chronicles 4:10. This is probably one of the smallest verses in the bible and not many people attribute much to this scripture. It is easy to pass over. It's little and seems insignificant. Although Jabez prayer request is only four lines long, each line is packed with prayers for guidance. Each line is a petition asking God for a specific intercessory request.

Jabez means "sorrowful" in Hebrew. That is where we get the root word "sorry." If you can imagine for a moment, every time someone called Jabez's name they were reinforcing his "sorry" state. Come here "Sorry" boy. Hello, "Sorrowful!" It also means "grief." If you've been in a sorry, sorrowful, or grieving state than this is a wonderful prayer for you. You're in the same place Jabez was when he prayed for healing from his sorry state.

Jabez's Prayer?

Oh! That You would bless me. Indeed!

That You would enlarge my territory,

That Your hand would be upon me,

That You would keep me from evil.

~1 Chronicles 4:10

Breaking it Down Line by Line

Oh! That You Would Bless Me, Indeed!

Asking for Provision

Jabez knew something. Jabez knew that God wants to bless His people. Jabez was desperate. Can't you hear the emphasis on his words. "Oh! God don't overlook me! Prosper me and give me a boost! Take me where you want me to go. Indeed!"

Indeed means big, great, exceedingly, extra, the extra mile!

Oh God! My prayer is that you would bless me in such a way that everyone would see it and know it is Your doing! Indeed, I need a giant blessing. Honor my request Lord. Indeed!

Jabez is asking for provision. Knowing full well God wants to provide.

What do you need provision for?

Greater Influence

That You Would Enlarge My Territory

When Jabez asked God to enlarge his territory he was asking for expanded influence. He is saying enlarge what I have and what I am and where I am. Allow progressive growth. Fling the doors wide open! Thank you for what is now, but can you stretch my faith, my resources, my business, my family, my ability. He is stepping out in faith knowing God can expand the territory that he has influence over. That God is the one who can increase his area of influence.

What could it mean in your life to have your area of influence increased? on your job? with your children? with your in-laws? in your neighborhood? in your town and in your state and the entire country? It's ok to think big! God does. He thinks universal!

That Your Hand Would Be Upon Me

Anointing - God's Ability on Me!

Jabez wants the open hand of God on him, not a closed fist. He is asking for opportunity, healing, he is asking for might and power. That calls for God's ability to be upon him. When the hand of God is upon you, doors open that no man can shut. He withholds no good thing from those who walk humbly before Him. It's not about doing things in our might but allowing Him to walk ahead of us and work in His power. When we are at the place where His hand is upon us, it is seen. It is apparent. People recognize the blessed man!

Not only that but when the hand of God is against someone, nothing they do will prosper. It is like running into a brick wall time and time again. "Not by might, nor by power but by my spirit," says the Lord.

That You Would Keep Me From Evil

Divine Protection

In the last line of this powerful prayer, Jabez is asking for protection from evil. Keep me from temptation and trials that are unnecessary for my growth. Keep me from the very things they said would happen to me. Keep your protective power around me, around my children, etc

Let me cause no harm to others, purposely or unaware. Keep me from saying and doing the wrong things. He is asking for a wall of fire, a hedge of protection and you can too.
