Elder Boyd K. Packer - Speaks in recent General Conference About Prophets and Apostles...

The First Presidency of the Church to Speak in General Conference

At a press conference given by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, it was announced that Thomas S. Monson had been ordained and set-apart as the new President and world leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This press conference of the LDS Church was held to announce the newly called First Presidency of the Mormon Church, following the death of Gordon B. Hinckley.

Thomas S. Monson, as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, First counselor - Henry B. Eyring, and Second counselor - Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf; who is one of the newest called to the Quorum of The Twelve Apostles. This has been done according to the established pattern of succession for the next prophet who serves as President of the Mormon Church.

Thomas S. Monson, as longest in seniority amongst all of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the LDS Church, is that which slates him as next in line for the position of the Living Prophet and President of the Mormon Church.

The Presidents two counselors, most always come from within the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. With a new First Presidency called, this will then leave a vacancy remaining in the Twelve.

This announcement came as no surprise to the members of the LDS Church. But, waiting upon the decision as to who the President's counselors would be, was not known previously. This decision, as to who the new Church President's counselors were to be, was made known by revelation to the President, by the Lord.

When these names were presented to the Quorum of the Twelve and sustained unanimously... once this is made official, it is taken to the body of the membership of the Mormon Church. This announcement, was the result of theses processes, and was the final result of these decisions.

The vacant position that was left in the Quorum of the Twelve, was filled as soon as possible, after the new First Presidency had been sustained, ordained and set-apart; and now function as the top ranking body of leadership in the Church.

A Life Prepared - To Serve God

As a member of the Mormon Church, one of the processes that I love, is to truly see the hand of the Lord, in the lives of those, whom He calls to serve Him.

Thomas S. Monson, has no doubt been prepared and preserved, his entire life, for this fore-ordained position as the Living Prophet and President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He is a man of great testimony, faith and experience. President Monson was 80 years old, at the time of his calling.

Now to many, they would say that this is ridiculous to have men leading the Church at this age -- why, they should be rocking in a chair on some porch in the country! Retirement years... here I come. The senile time of life -- when you start to forget your own name.

Actually this is just about the age that the Lord seems to like his Living Prophet these days. After all, Gordon B. Hinckley was 84 when he was sustained as President of the Church. Heck, Thomas S. Monson is just a babe still.

Thomas S. Monson has been serving in the Church his entire career. He was called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles at the age of 36, and has worked alongside every President of the Church since 1963.

Thomas S. Monson is known by the members of the LDS Church as a great teller of stories, in teaching the principles of the Gospel. He has a wonderful way about him - as he uses many of his experiences from his life of service -- to teach with. He has a great love for the widows and the elderly, and often relates very touching stories of his visits with these good Senior Saints. President Monson has great ability in having compassion for the down troden, the outcast and the needy.

I always love to hear the story he tells, of the old man down the street, for whom his mother regularly made dinner for. 'Tommy', as a boy, would be required by his mother, every week, to deliver this meal to their old neighbor. He learned a great deal about service, love compassion and gratitude as a young boy - and tributes his mother to this.

He was called to serve at the age of 22, as a young Bishop in the Church. Three years following that call, he was called into the Stake Presidency as a counselor. His ward, took in geographically, many of the elderly.

At today's press conference, he shared that the ward that he served in as that young Bishop, had 84 elderly people whom he ministered to. It was their desire that 'Tommy" would speak at their funerals. In the year 2000, his secretary let him know, that he HAD finally done just this! Amazing. I cannot imagine, only but a prophet of God, would have been sustained by the Lord, to fulfill this desire.

The Lord's hand is in the every movement and detail of the life, of him, who will serve as His Living Prophet in the appointed time of the future. He is tutored and trained by the hand of providence, unknowing to this individual; as the preserving of that life; is in the hand of God - unto fulifilling His purposes.

The position of who will serve as a President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, is literally not known as a sure thing for any man or Apostle - until that precise moment comes. And yet, when that or THIS moment comes; as it has today - it is one that testifies of the hand of God in His Church here upon the earth today.

The beauty of this process for the succession of the top ranking position in the LDS Church, has no room for competitiveness nor ego, thus allowing a love and unity, unlike any found in other organizations upon the earth.

This way, testifies that it is God's way; for man, with ego -- would never trust such a large 'investment', to be left to 'luck'?

This is the testimony that is born by members of the Mormon Church, who rest their faith in Jesus Christ, who is no doubt - at its head.

You can see, that President Monson’s leadership skills were recognized early in his life. At the time of his call to the Twelve, he was one of the youngest men ever to be called, in the twentieth century -- to this high a ranking position in the LDS Church.

President Monson has served in almost every capacity possible during his life of service. He served first with President Ezra T. Benson as a counselor in the First Presidency, and then was called again when Gordon B. Hinckley was sustained as President.

Thomas S. Monson, is a dedicated, loving and humble servant of God, who is both respected and loved by the LDS members. He has served faithfully along side of our last two Presidents of the Church in complete unity, love and support.

President Thomas S. Monson - Living Prophet of God!

Calling A Prophet of God

Finding out, who would be the next President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, was the big question that the world is waited to have answered...

Well, guess what? Apparently, that very same question; seems to also be -- the 'one' question -- that many were asking, when this new prophet of God was to be called.

The Calling of a Prophet of God - How Does That Work?

(A discussion of how this happens, of six months ago...)

What I mean is (was) this... I personally can tell you, that almost all that I have spoken with, and most of these -- also happen to BE members of the Mormon Church... they ALSO - are asking the very same question?

"So, who -- IS going to be our next prophet"?

Does that seem strange to you?

I suppose, one would 'think', that every member of the LDS Church, surely would know how this process of succession of the President of the LDS Church actually takes place, right?

Well, if you didn't realize this, it has been nearly thirteen years since there has been the death of a President of the Mormon Church. The growth of the LDS Church has been tremendous over the last decade. In the time that Gordon B. Hinckley served as President of the Church, the added growth of the Church; has been approximately three million, which I think is truly astonishing.

I also feel that you should consider this fact; an entire group of youth, who basically 'grew-up' with most of their memories - of only President Hinckley; and who are now young adults. These young people, really have never been through the 'changing of the guard' -- so to speak. They would have been too young to really understand what and how a President is called.

Each of these two factors- put together - mean huge growth -not only of the Church -- but up - IN the Church.... get it? So, this is a lot of people who kind of understand, but... not really. 'They' - are still growing in this area of 'their' membership in the Church. Which makes this occasion, to be unprecedented - for many - both within and outside of the Mormon Church.

Succession of the Living Prophet of God, who is called to be the succeeding President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints; is considered a divine and inspired process, by the LDS people; but also -- it is a fascinating process for many to observe. It is one of unity amongst the Saints. It is a process that only God Himself, is able to manipulate. This is that part of the Gospel, which many testimonies are founded and strengthened by.

In all of this excitement, the LDS members of the Church -- wait to see the Hand of the Lord - in His Work. It is the responsibility and privilege of each member - to individually seek a personal confirmation of the will of the Lord -- by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Succession of a Prophet Requires Faith and Unity, in the Lord

The succession of the next Mormon prophet, has been well established over the course of the history of the LDS Church. Unless something changes, that is unprecedented at this point, then Thomas S. Monson, will be the next President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.

This established succession in the LDS Church, is that the Senior Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; according to length of service and not age; also serves as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. It is this natural position, that then qualifies that Apostle, to be in line, to succeed the Living Prophet and President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, at the time of his passing.

A President of the LDS Church, is first - and also a Prophet and Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ; as all of them are -- called of God, for the remainder of their lives, until they die.

The call of an Apostle is a call to drop everything that 'you' are engaged in, and serve the remainder of your days in bringing others unto Christ.

An Apostle of the Lord; as in ancient Christianity - turns away from the world and consecrates the remainder of his days to the building up of the Kingdom of God upon the earth. His work, becomes completely that work of the Master Himself; as though it were Him.

Apostles and Prophets of The Lord..

One-By-One - The Testimony of Latter-Day-Saints

This is the testimony, that IS The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints! Knowing personally -- that this particular man has been called of God -- to be His Living Prophet here upon the earth -- is the very strength of unity, commitment and devotion; which moves this great work of the Mormon Church forward with such power. It is the testimony received by the personal witness of the Holy Ghost - that He Stands at the Head of His Church.

President Monson, prior to the passing of President Gordon B. Hinckley, served as his first counselor, in the First Presidency of the Mormon Church. But, that is 'not' the position that qualifies him to be the next President of the LDS Church.

Are you confused... yet? Stay with me, and I will attempt to make it as simple as possible for all of us.

The position that actually places him next in succession, is that of the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; which is the very position that Thomas S. Monson holds.

Now you are confused...

Hang in there... Because Monson, had been called, from the twelve -- into the First Presidency, to serve next to President Hinckley; another Apostle was appointed as the "Acting President" of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The acting President has been Boyd K. Packer, who -- while Thomas S. Monson fulfilled his calling to the First Presidency of the Church - as a counselor to the President of the Church -- Packer , stepped up as appointed and then served in absence of Thomas S. Monson .

So, once again, it is the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, who is next in succession, because of seniority, which is to be the next President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.

When ye have done it unto the least of my brethren, ye have done it unto me...

APOSTLES OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST - HIS SPECIAL WITNESSES

Priesthood and the Calling of God's Living Prophets

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints, is the highest ranking body of the Church. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles - serve under the direction of The First Presidency; and are the second highest ranking body in the Mormon Church.

The First Presidency consist of three members, with the Living Prophet at its head, who serves as the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. It is this President, who with His Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles -- that unitedly -- direct the affairs of the entire worldwide - Mormon Church.

It is the understanding and testimony of the LDS members, that these men are truly called of God, by revelation -- of Jesus Christ and through the Power of The Holy Spirit.

  • Once called, these men are then;

  • sustained by the membership of the entire worldwide Church, in a unanimous vote by the raising of the right hand; which is usually done in a General Conference, or other meeting designated as necessary;

  • they are then -ordained and set-apart, through the ordinance of 'The Laying on of Hands' -- by One with Priesthood Authority.

The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve, are regarded by the membership of the LDS Church, to truly be prophets of God in these latter-days. They are revered by the Mormon people, as men of God, who literally are called of God; and are considered to be 'especial witnesses' of Jesus Christ, in our time.

Just as the Twelve at the time of Jesus Christ, walked and talked with the Savior, and through their sacred relationship with Him at their head; these men, are able to also bear witness to the world - That Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of all men, that He suffered in atoning for our sins; He was crucified and now -

He is Risen!

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST IS -- THAT HE LIVES!

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST - FOUND IN THE INDIVIDUAL TESTIMONY - OF EACH MEMBER - BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY GHOST, THAT IT IS TRUE!

The Gospel of Jesus Christ - Found in the Individual Testimony of Every Member, by the Power of the Holy Ghost

The testimonies of these men, are considered to be that which is a SURE knowledge of the reality of Jesus Christ. These men are all considered to be prophets, seers and revelators, called of God, to go forth and administer the affairs of His Church here upon the earth, at this time.

The words that are delivered by this body of 15 men, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost, are considered to be as 'scripture' to the Latter-Day-Saints. The President ONLY - is authorized to declare doctrine, that is binding on the entire Mormon Church and its members.

When binding doctrine is declared by the First Presidency; it is presented to the Quorum of the Twelve and these two highest ranking official bodies; then together as ONE, seek the confirmation from the Lord; to receive a COMPLETE UNITY.

The binding doctrines and proceedures, proclaimed to the entire worldwide membership of the LDS Church; are ONLY declared -- by that ONE man, who has been authorized by Jesus Christ Himself; as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints - to speak on His behalf-- here upon the earth.

The President of the LDS Church, is considered by the Mormon people, to be directing the affairs of The Church in all things; which is accepted by the LDS people - to be the 'will' of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

This authority to act in The Name of Jesus Christ -- is referred to as "The Priesthood of God". Members of the LDS Church believe in a complete restoration of The Gospel of Jesus Christ, whereby all of the Keys to adminster the Church with its Saving ordinances; have been restored to the earth again.

Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Mormon Church; received the Priesthood Authority; through the angelic ministration of Peter, James and John - who also held this same Priesthood and Keys, when upon the earth. Just as in the days of the Living Christ, LDS members -- accept that Jesus Christ, still has called Apostles, as were Peter, James and John; which have been placed in His stead, to continue to administer the Gospel in His Name.

Thomas S. Monson, on a Personal Note...

I love this man, Thomas S. Monson, whom I have personally been instructed by in many circumstances, through my membership in the LDS Church. I know that he is called of God, at this time. I know that he has been prepared to hold the reigns, under the direction of the Master, as the Living prophet upon the earth, whom He has authorized.

I honor President Monson, as the chosen servant of the Lord, this day; and feel it a privilege to serve him... as he serves the Lord.

I am grateful for the gift of the Holy Ghost, as a member of the Mormon Church - to witness of truth restored in these latter-days. Of these things, I have a firm testimony.

ALSO, besure to check out the most recent Headlines in TODAY'S NEWS - Just below.

THE WORLD NEEDS A LIVING PROPHET OF GOD.

IT IS BY THE HAND OF THE LORD, WHO KNOWS ALL THINGS FROM THE BEGINNING...

When the President of the Church dies, the entire Quorum of the Twelve, falls back into order of seniority -- which is how long, not how old -- that they have served in the Quorum as an Apostle.

As the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles now stands, since the very moment of Gordon B. Hinckley's passing; Thomas S. Monson, has fallen back into his rightful place, as Senior Apostle of the Quorum of the Twelve; which places him right back in 'his' position as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

During the time frame between the death of the former President of the Church and when the newly sustained President is set-apart; the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles - function as 'the leadership' -- as one -- for the entire Church -- with the President of the Twelve functioning at the head. It is he, who oversees the proceedings during the interim.

I surely hope that this has helped some to understand just how inspired this process is; as well as the sacredness of this succession -- is to the members of LDS Church - in establishing the firm testimonies that are a hallmark, of the members of The Mormon Church.

I personally have been through this succession process a few times now. As the years go by, and righteous men are called to serve as Apostles of the Lord... I am amazed at how the Lord shows forth His will; in the process of the lives of these men - that ultimately places a single, humble servant of the Lord... prepared by

The Master Himself - to be called as Peter of old...

President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.

President Monson ordained my Grandfather a High Priest many years ago. Although I was very young at the time I do remember bits and pieces of the event. But my Mother and Father remember him well and they say he's truly a great man. I have sent a link to my parents.

Another great Hub!

I became Mormon about a year ago. It's been so good for me with my relationship with the true God, and Jesus Christ! I have been reading all the Mormon books and find them fascinating. I actually have found translations that Joseph Smith may have Missed in Book of Abraham! I have written in what they mean, when he said "...this shall be translated at another time!" That to me means by myself, or anyone of us. It's not for everyone, being Mormon. But it's for me totally. I have found my faith with God and being with God, speaking to him, etc. has improved greatly. The biggest problem: I thought the congregation didn't like me and thought I was a coo coo bird, but it's the opposite, it just takes time to be part of it. I am married, but my hubby is not in the church, I'm older, I have no kids, and I am odd, but a lesson was taught last week about "God loves the Odd", it's interesting be part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I've tried other churches, but Mormon does it for me. Maybe you'd like to read my hub articles "I'm Mormon, and Staying That way!", or perhaps "I Saw Joseph Smith in a Vision when They Put me out For an Endoscopy!" There's others just google "Leslie Siegel Mormon" and you'll see them. Love you all and thanks for having me!
