2013/14 Champions League: First Qualifying Round
Well we now know the four clubs who will battle in the first qualifying round for the 2013/14 Champions League tourney. The winners from these match-ups will advance to the second qualifying round.
The seeded clubs are EB/Streymur from the Faroe Islands and Tre Penne of San Marino. EB/Streymur come in with a club coefficient of 2.316 while Tre Penne has a 1.383 coefficient. These two clubs will match-up against either Lusitanos from Andorra or Shirak from Armenia. Lusitanos has a coefficient of 1.100 while Shirak has a .850. On June 24, 2013 we will find out who matches up with who. The first leg will be played either the 2nd or 3rd of July with the second leg being played on the 9th or 10th of July.
These teams leagues have not had a great record in they Champions League over the past couple of years. Last year Tre Penne and Lusitanos were in the first qualifying round and lost in it. B36 Torshavn represented the Faroe Islands and also lost in first qualifying round. Ulisses represented Armenia last year. They started in the second qualifying round and lost there.
In 2011/12 San Marino was represented by Tre Fiori while Andorra was represented by FC Santa Coloma both clubs lost in the first qualifying round. HB Torshavn represented the Faroe Islands while Pyunik represented Armenia. Both clubs entered the tourney in the second qualifying round were they both lost.
With that said we know two of these league will advance to the next step. The question will be which two clubs will that be. I like EB/Streymur to advance to the next round regardless who they face in their match-up. If Lusitanos gets a match-up with Tre Penne I like them to advance joining EB/Streymur in second qualifying round. If Lusitanos gets stuck playing EB/Streymur look for Tre Penne to advance to next round over Shirak.
One of the great things about football is that you never really know what will happen. So, yes a club like Shirak could beat EB/Streymur very easily. So, for those gamblers out their you will need some luck on your side to make some money of these ties. Not many worldwide fans care about these match-ups as they wait for the big clubs from Germany, Spain and England to enter the tourney once we get to the group stage. For me I like to follow these clubs from the get go to see if any of these small clubs can make it to play with the big boys.
For an American like me I love how all these leagues join into one tourney to find out who is the best football club in UEFA. I also love the Europa League which is the second best tourney to me in the world for club teams. I am counting down the days until we find out the match-ups for the first and second qualifying rounds.
