Asian Cup Cricket – Pakistan vs. Bangladesh

Pakistan Is the Favourites

Tendulkar’s Surprise Bowling Record

The Asian Cup cricket tournament starts tomorrow with Pakistan taking on Bangladesh at Mirpur in the opening match. Sachin Tendulkar is renowned for his batting records, but in Asian Cup, he holds the bowling record of maximum number of wickets taken by an Indian bowler. Tendulkar has taken 17 wickets which no other Indian bowler had surpassed or equalled.

Pakistan Is the Favourites

Pakistan starts the match as a favourite not only because of its cricketing skills, but it has arrived fresh from Dubai and Abu Dhabi where it had played against England in a test series, ODI series and a T20 series. Pakistan won the test series with a clean sweep of four wins but it lost the subsequent ODI and T20 series to England. Misba-ul-Haq is leading the Pakistani squad. Pakistan side has an all round talent. Its fielding, batting and bowling are good. Bangladesh starts as an underdog in the match.

Pakistani Soldiers Assaulted Bangladeshi Women and Children

But Bangladesh has produced some superb performances. In the last World Cup, at one stage it was set to enter the knock out stage but lost. Bangladesh has one advantage in the match. The big crowd in the Mirpur stadium will be totally behind the home team. Pakistan will also receive hostile reaction from the crowd as forty years back Pakistani soldiers butchered the Bangladeshi people, looted their properties and robbed Bangladeshi women their priceless asset. Many Bangladeshi women committed suicide after the loss of their dignity. Bangladesh people can never forget this injustice done to them and their families. It was the Indian soldiers who entered Bangladesh and crushed the Pakistani soldiers to provide a reprieve to the hapless Bangladeshi people. Bangladesh can never forget this help from India.

Indians May Be Welcome in Bangladesh

One may argue that cricket is different from politics. Such futile arguments can be advanced to fool oneself, but the truth is that cricket or for that matter any sport is part of the society and is not isolated from it. The crowd will not differentiate such atrocities from cricket. This is a distinct disadvantage for the Pakistani team. In fact the Bangladesh crowd may welcome Indian players and garland them. But Pakistani team will be viewed with hostile reaction by a majority of the people in the stadium and outside the stadium. All in all, a tough match is ahead and fans should not miss this match as it is played on a holiday namely Sunday.
