Australia Versus Sri Lanka One, Day Match At Melbourne – Who Will Win?

Do Or Die Battle For Sri Lanka

Do Or Die Battle For Sri Lanka

The crucial one day match between Australia and Sri Lanka will be played at Melbourne Cricket Stadium tomorrow (2nd March 2012). The result of the earlier India versus Sri Lanka match at Hobart has made tomorrow’s match very critical for Sri Lanka. Australia has already qualified for the finals and tomorrow’s match is going to be just a practice match for the Aussies. But for Sri Lanka, it will be a do or die match to salvage its prestige after progressing so much in the current triangular series.

India Will Be Praying For An Aussie Victory

Sri Lanka defeated Australia in their last one day match at Hobart. Therefore Australia will try to win this match to boost its confidence. For India, an Australian victory over Sri Lanka will enable it to enter the finals. After earning the bonus points against Sri Lanka through a classic innings played by Virat Kohli, India will be praying for an Australian victory in tomorrow’s match.

Thomson And Lillee Targeted Skulls Instead Of Stumps

Whenever Australia and Sri Lanka meet in a one day match, my mind goes back to the injustice done to the Sri Lanka players by the Australian speedsters Jeff Thomson and Denis Lillee. The two openly stated their intention to target the Sri Lankan batsmen’s skulls rather than aiming at their stumps. It was done at a time when protective gadgets had not yet arrived and batsmen used to bat with just a sun hat covering their heads. Even in the midst of this physical challenge, the Sri Lanka batsmen gamely took on the task and very nearly came to victory. Remember, in 1975 Sri Lanka was not even a test playing nation.

Sri Lanka Won The World Cup In 1996, Defeating Australia

Remembering the above incident, my mind always longs for a Sri Lanka victory over Australia in any one day match. I felt very happy when Sri Lanka defeated Australia in the World Cup Cricket finals at Lahore in 1996 through a spectacular century by Aravinda De Silva. I felt very happy when Sri Lanka defeated Australia in their last one day match played in Tasmania.

Pakistanis Prayed For An Indian Defeat In The Last World Cup

Pakistanis Prayed For An Indian Defeat In The Last World Cup

But for tomorrow’s match, I wish for an Aussie victory, for a change. Being an Indian, it is important for me that India should enter the finals and if possible win the Cup. For that to happen, a Sri Lanka defeat at the hands of Australia in tomorrow’s match is a must. I will be praying for that to happen. But can prayers alter the result of a match? The entire nation Pakistan prayed in the mosques for the success of their side against India in last year’s semi finals played at Mohali in the World Cup Cricket. There were devotees who held the Holy Koran in their hands and prayed continuously for the whole duration of the match (around eight hours including lunch time) without even blinking their eyes and foregoing their food. There were huge queues before the mosques and people asked Lord Allah to grant a victory for Pakistan and a defeat for the infidels (Pakistanis call the Indians as infidels). But in the end, Sachin Tendulkar quashed the effects of all these prayers and brought an Indian victory.

Hindustan Is Pakistan’s Arch Enemy

Therefore prayers can satisfy one’s mind but need not necessarily bring about the desired result for tomorrow’s match. While Indians will be praying for an Australian win in tomorrow’s match, the entire Pakistan will be praying for a Sri Lanka victory just to eliminate India from the triangular series. Once this happens, Pakistanis will stop praying because they will be no longer interested whether Sri Lanka or Australia wins the Cup. Pakistani people want to see India eliminated because Hindustan is Pakistan’s arch enemy. Even the Talibans will temporarily stop shooting school going girls and will be busy in praying for a Sri Lanka victory. The Talibans may even be invoking Lord Buddha in their prayers.

Malinga Was Smashed

One distinct advantage for Australia is that India badly damaged the reputation of the Sri Lanka’s main bowler Lasith Malinga. Virat Kohli hit 24 runs in the penultimate over bowled by Malinga. This will serve to boost the Aussie confidence. If Warner and Hussey tear Malinga to pieces, then Australia can hope to put up a total 300 plus. The Aussie bowlers headed by Lee and Hilfenhaus are distinctly superior compared to the Indian bowlers and therefore Sri Lanka may find it difficult to attack them and score. As Sri Lankan confidence is also down right now, Aussies can press for victory as they play cricket in more organized manner.

Chasing Is Better For Australia

No doubt, the Sri Lankan top batting order that includes Dilshan, Sangakkara and Jayawardene is in good nick. In the last match, both Dilshan and Sangakkara scored centuries. Dilshan scored 150 plus and pulverized all the Indian bowlers. Therefore there is a likelihood that the Sri Lanka batsmen may attack the Aussie bowlers and score more runs. Ultimately, Sri Lanka may put up a good total if it bats first. But as the Sri Lanka bowlers are not up to the mark, Australia can afford to chase the target in the allotted fifty overs. There is no pressure on Australia to score the required runs in 40 overs as was required for India in its last match. If Australia bats first, Sri Lanka may be better equipped to chase the target and eventually win. This is because the Sri Lanka batsmen are in finer fettle than their bowlers. So, it suits Sri Lanka to chase. Toss will play a crucial role in tomorrow’s match.

nice article. Inside this article, you have mentioned that Virat Kohli plundered 24 runs in Malinga's last over. But his penultimate over only he got masscared to 24 runs. In his final over, he conceded only eight.

Dear karan tanwani,

I thank you for your valuable comments. As I had gone out to attend a marriage, I could see your question only after the match was over. However, I offer my prediction for the third finals - Sri Lanka should win it.

Best wishes to you,
