Australia Wins the Commonwealth Bank Tri Series by Default

Sri Lanka Lost a Splendid Opportunity

Aussies Had Taken a Leaf from Douglas Jardine

Australia triumphed over Sri Lanka in the third finals and lifted the Cup in the Commonwealth Bank tri series ODI played at Adelaide Oval. The Aussies are always fighters and never give up the match till the last ball is bowled. The Aussies are also high revenge takers. The Aussies are also very aggressive and treat cricket like boxing. Instead of targeting at the stumps and taking wickets, the Aussies target ribcages and skulls of the batsmen and elevate the game to a fiery and emotional level. Perhaps they should have learnt this from Douglas Jardine and Larwood. Interestingly England abandoned these two players after the purpose was over, but Australia seems to have taken a leaf out of them for their cricketing approach.

Sri Lanka Lost a Splendid Opportunity

Sri Lanka lost a splendid chance to beard the Aussie lion in its own den. Throughout the series, the Sri Lanka batsmen had performed splendidly but their bowling lacked penetrative power. Sri Lanka’s chief bowler Lasith Malinga was smashed by both Australian and Indian batsmen. At one stage, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene handed over the new ball to Dilshan instead of trusting Malinga. But in the crucial finals, the Sri Lanka bowlers performed their assigned task splendidly. They skittled out the Aussies for 231. No Australian batsman could score even a half century.

Sri Lanka Batsmen Surrendered Their Wickets Tamely

Having done their job adequately, the Sri Lankan bowler had already bowled their side to a victory. It was just a formality for their in-form batsmen to consolidate that hold and press for victory. But shockingly, the Sri Lanka batsmen failed miserably to reach even this modest target. One can understand the plight of the Sri Lanka batsmen had the Australian bowlers been unplayable. But it was not so. The Australian bowlers were nothing but a little above average. It was the fault of the Sri Lanka batsmen to surrender their wickets one after the other meekly without putting up a semblance of a fight.

Tharanga’s Knock Proved Insufficient

When the top order Sri Lanka batsmen failed, even then Sri Lankan hopes of registering a victory were not abandoned as their tail-enders were capable of putting up a fight as was proved by Nuwan Kulasekara in the second finals at Adelaide. But this time the tail-enders found it too difficult to manage and fumbled up. Tharanga tried to prolong the agony but in the end, his 71 proved insufficient to stage a miraculous win. Sri Lanka invited its own decimation by its sluggish batting approach.

Only England Can Defeat Australia

I wanted Australia to taste a defeat against Sri Lanka in this ODI series. But my wish was not fulfilled. Australia will be travelling to West Indies shortly and should win that series also as the West Indies team headed by Sami cannot offer a worthy resistance to the Aussies. Only England can offer a tough fight to them in the immediate future.
