Bangladesh, A Rising Force In International Cricket

BPL Has Shaped Up Bangladesh Players

Bangladesh Defeated India In 2007 And Now

The just concluded Micromax Asia Cup cricket ODI tournament has established Bangladesh as a rising star in the international cricket beyond doubt. During the last World Cup, glimpses of Bangladesh talent were evident. In the opening match against India, Bangladesh batsmen attempted to chase a huge total of 370 plus against India and came close to achieving it. Had Virender Sehwag, Indian opening batsman not decimated the Bangladesh attack and scored 173, Bangladesh could have won that opening match. In the 2007 World Cup cricket, Bangladesh actually defeated India with a very good bowling from Mortaza.

Bangladesh Was 58 All Out Against West Indies

But at the same time, Bangladesh also cowed down before the West Indies last year in the World Cup. Darren Sammy’s West Indies side has no pretentions of being a strong side, but even against such a side, the Bangladesh batsmen could not perform and the team was bowled out for 58. The match itself was over in few hours’ time. The angry crowd which expected to witness a full day’s match stoned the bus in which the West Indies players were travelling and gave vent to their ire.

BPL Has Shaped Up Bangladesh Players

But during the current Asia Cup, the Bangladesh batsmen and bowlers exhibited a remarkably improved performance. This could be due to the introduction of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) last year on the same lines of Indian Premier League (IPL). This twenty-twenty (T20) format of cricket improved the skills of the Bangladesh players to a great extent. In one day matches, the batsmen need to score runs quickly. For this, they have to take risk and hit unconventional shots. The bowlers need to restrict runs and at the same time take wickets also. Fielders need to be agile all the time and prevent boundaries.

Even Under Difficult Conditions, Bangladesh Can Chase A Target And Win

Bangladesh players learned all these techniques from the BPL tournament. They started the Asia Cup with their first match against Pakistan. It was a close encounter and Bangladesh lost. But in their next match, Bangladesh defeated the highly fancied World Champions India. Bangladesh was set a tough target of 290 to chase by India. Bangladesh batsmen chased this target and achieved the impossible. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in their next game under difficult overcast conditions. The outfield was wet because of the intervention of time. All these adverse factors did not prevent Bangladesh from scoring the winning target.

Bangladesh Lost The Asia Cup By A Cat’s Whisker

In the finals against Pakistan, Bangladesh lost by a cat’s whisker. Had they not conceded the 19 runs in the final over to Pakistan, they could have won the final with ease and with overs and wickets to spare. Cricket analysts have no hesitation to say that Bangladesh has demonstrated that it has arrived at the international cricket as a force to reckon with. Now it should capitalise on this performance and post wins in all brands of cricket.

Shakib Al Hasan, An Asset To Bangladesh Team

Bangladesh has a wonderful all rounder Shakib Al Hasan. He played well throughout the tournament. Shakib was awarded the player of the tournament award. Tamim Iqbal is a renowned opening batsman. He scored half centuries in all the matches. He was very crucial in all the victories Bangladesh posted in the tournament. Nasir Hossain was very productive. He can hit the ball hard and at the same time put his head down and play defence also as he demonstrated in the final of the tournament. Jaharul Islam is another player who can be depended on. The captain Muhsfiqur Rahim can hit the ball hard for boundaries and sixes in quick time. He was responsible for Bangladesh win against India. Bangladesh bowling has two left arm spin bowlers who can be compared to the best spinners of the world. Their medium pace bowling is highly resulted-oriented. Bangladesh fielding is very tight. The fielders pounce upon the ball like the royal tiger to prevent it from going to the boundary.

Bangladesh Can Even Win The World Cup

In the coming years, I am quite sure that Bangladesh cricket will mature to even better level. One day Bangladesh may even become the world champions. That may even happen in 2015 in Australia. Sri Lanka was not even a test playing country two decades back. They became the world champions in 1996. A similar achievement is awaiting Bangladesh cricket.

I think it is too premature to talk about Bangladesh as serious competition let alone winning the world cup. The performance in one tournament does not say anything. It could well be a passing phase. Bangladesh would have to perform consistently in a few tournaments in the next couple of years to become an interesting team to follow!!!! Of course Bangladesh could win the world cup like how India won in 1983 which itself was acknowledged as fluke and was amply proven after that.

They played exceptionally well in the Asia Cup and deserve all the praise. But consistency is the key. Asia Cup should be a good confidence booster. Let's see where it gets them.
