Barcelona Vs Chelsea

Finest Defensive Exhibition by Chelsea

Messi Magic Did Not Work

Messi magic did not work out in the first leg semi-final between Barcelona and Chelsea. Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba struck at London in the injury time of the first half to take the lead for Chelsea. Barcelona failed to equalise much less win in the second half though they made several valiant attempts to do so. Messi came very near to scoring in the final minute of the match but the ball hit the bar and bounced. Iniesta also tried his best. Barcelona lost not because of want of trying but because of destiny. In fact Barcelona possessed the ball most of the time in the match. Chelsea at best looked like a second fiddle to Barcelona.

Drogba Struck Vital Blow at Barca

Didier Drogba was at the right place and right time to intercept a Ramires cross and shoot past the Barcelona defender Adriano. It beat the goalkeeper Victor Valdes also. Valdes is not Casilas to prevent such a hit. Even Casilas could not prevent Gomez from scoring in the earlier match in the last minute. At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea enjoyed the support of the home crowd. Thousands of English football fans hooted and howled at the stadium to cheer their favourite Chelsea which is an English club.

Finest Defensive Exhibition by Chelsea

But Chelsea exhibited one of the finest defences in the game of football. Barcelona’s attack was very sharp led by the great and majestic Lionel Messi supported by players like Iniesta. Still, Barcelona could not penetrate the Chelsea defence. Chelsea boss Roberto di Matteo should have been elated at the performance of his team and the result of the match. A team gets very few chances to score while playing against a mighty club like Barcelona. Chelsea got their only chance and made success of it. Chelsea’s ultra-defensive strategy was successful in this match. But the same strategy followed by Real Madrid after equalising in the 53rd minute resulted in failure and severe criticism from the fans and analysts.

Ashley Cole Repeated His 2004 Euro Feat

Ashley Cole’s performance reminded me the match between Portugal and England in the Euro 2004. Barcelona should have scored in the ninth minute of the match but Alexis Sanchez’s hit went to the crossbar. Against a tight defence put up by Chelsea, Messi had problems in penetrating near the goal post but still some of his attempts were half successful. After seventeen minutes, Messi passed the ball to Iniesta whose cross shot was defended by Cech. Fabregas hit the ball wide. Fabregas was the culprit again two minutes before the half time when he floundered on a Messi pass over Cech. Ashley Cole dissuaded the ball from reaching the net. A Puyol header should have rewarded Barcelona but Cech saved it.

Barcelona Vs Chelsea

Drogba Worked Like a Trojan

Second leg of the semi-final will be played at the Camp Nou next Tuesday. Barcelona had 846 passes against Chelsea’s 228. Barcelona had ball possession in 72% of the match. Drogba silenced his critics who quoted his age and called him too old to play football. Drogba worked like a Trojan in the match. Rain lashed the Stanford Bridge during the match. Barcelona had 24 attempts on the goal but Chelsea had only one attempt. The crucial difference was that the lone attempt by Chelsea was successful but Barcelona’s all the attempts resulted in failure. Chelsea was outplayed by Barca in most of the match and it came as a surprise to see the result going Chelsea’s way. Chelsea’s gambit to play Drogba instead of Fernando Torres paid off.

Chelsea Is Getting Stronger Against Spanish Clubs

Had Ashley Cole not hooked the ball clear, Barcelona would have equalised. Adriano unleashed a poisonous shot. Cech diving at full stretch parried it to safety. Cech is not the legendary Lev Yashin, but he appeared to be so at least during this time. This was Barcelona’s third loss in 63 games this season. Barcelona failed to defeat Chelsea in the last six matches against them. Chelsea on the other hand is unbeaten in 14 matches, away or home, against Spanish clubs. As Barcelona went down crashing to their first European defeat this season, the credit should be shared equally among Frank Lampard, Drogba, Ashley Cole, John Terry and the goalkeeper Petr Cech.

$50 Million Fernando Torres Not Played

It was expected that Roberto di Matteo will play the superstar Fernando Torres to whom Chelsea paid $50 million. But after seeing Drogba’s contribution in crushing Spurs 5-1 on Sunday, he would have changed his mind. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola assessed Chelsea to be the favourites to go to the final but I differ from him. In the second leg in Spain, Chelsea will find it difficult to repeat this performance and Barcelona are the clear favourites to go to the finals. But for the time being, Chelsea can enjoy their glory.

Chelsea might have won but I think they played a very bad football. Roberto di Matteo certainly made them play in a very Italian, defensive, closed way which makes football much less nice to watch.

yeah but you cant expect a team to go to Barcelona and try to outplay them, they'd get torn apart

Dear Claudia Tello,

I thank you for your valuable comments. I agree with your observations. Italians always make football boring. Italy will indulge in attack only in the last two minutes of the game. Spectators will be made to sleep for the rest of the time. But there are exceptions. In 1982, Paulo Rossi and Alessandro Altobelli made Italy an attacking team and Italy even defeated Brazil with Rossi's hat trick.

Best wishes to you,
