What is a Hardtail Mountain Bike?

A hardtail mountain bike is a mountain bike that does not have rear suspension. In other words they have suspension for the front wheel only.

If it's harder to ride in certain conditions, then why would you want a hardtail mountain bike?

It's been said that races are won "on the hills". Hardtails are lighter, have a stiffer rear end, and therefore also have better acceleration and sprinting capabilities. If you are starting out a hardtail is essential to get because it will teach you all of the skills you really need to know. Hardtails also require less maintenance.

In general for the cost you can get much more out of a Hardtail Mountain Bike.
