Cam Newton's Woes. Will he still pose

The Pay to Play Scandal

Many reports have surfaced about Newton as of late. When coach, Dan Mullen, was appointed Head Coach at Mississippi State, Newton had supposedly made Mississippi State his first choice of college. Oklahoma and, more so, Auburn had also made a push for the services of Newton, but Coach Mullen was said to have the inside edge because of his past relationship with Newton when they were  together at Florida.

The scandal started when Mississippi State Alumni and former Miami Dolphins player, Kenny Rogers, alleged that Cecil Newton told him it would take at least $180,000 dollars to get his son to sign with Mississippi State. Rogers is affiliated with a company that matches high school athletes with prospective colleges. It is thought that this is a multi-million dollar industry and that agents are involved with the players in order to get them to sign with them upon entering the NFL Draft. Rumors fluctuated when a report came out the Cam Newton had told a Mississippi State official, over the phone, that he wanted to go to Mississippi State, but his father said the money was just too much to pass up. This rumor has, however, been denied by both Cecil Newton and Mississippi State officials.

Another piece of information that sparks suspicion is that Cecil Newton is the pastor of his home town church. This church had recently been on the brink of being closed because of safety code violations. The church was given 6 months to start renovation and there are even reports where Cecil Newton claimed the church had no such money to perform these renovations. Coincidentally, directly after Cam signed with Auburn, renovations on the church started. Bank statements have been investigated and so far everything has matched up. It has been said that the major part of the renovation money has come from Cam's brother, Cecil Jr., who plays for the Miami Dolphins. Another thing that brings in questioning is that Cam, Cecil, Coach Chizik and Auburn Athletic Director have refused to talk about the allegations with the press. In most cases if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't have to keep quiet. There seems to be some fine line they may be treading.

Who is Cam Newton?

Cameron Newton was born May 11th, 1989 in College Park, Georgia. He is 6'6" tall and weighs 250lbs. He played his high school ball at Westlake High School. There he threw for nearly 4,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,700 yards in just two seasons.

In 2007 Newton committed to the University of Florida. His first season was spent on the sidelines behind future Heisman winner, Tim Tebow, who is now in the NFL. The following season Newton was injured in the season opener which forced him to go on medical redshirt for the rest of the season. During the same year, Newton was charged with burglary. He had allegedly purchased a stolen laptop from a fellow student. He was briefly dismissed from the football team, but later welcomed back after he completed a theft program appointed by the court.

After Tim Tebow announced that he would be returning for his senior season, Newton and his father, Cecil, decided it would be best if he transferred to another college where he could at least play and show off his skills. Newton then transferred to Blinn College in Texas in 2009. He led Blinn to the NJCAA National Title victory and was named the number 1 quarterback prospect in junior college or high school. He was the only player to be given 5 stars.

The Consequences

As of right now, Cam Newton is leading the Heisman Trophy race. His team is 11-0 heading into a bye week in which after that they will play Alabama in the Iron Bowl. The Tigers have sealed the SEC West Division and will most likely face South Carolina in the SEC Championship game. Other than SEC Championship hopes, Auburn is also ranked #2 in the polls and are favored to face Oregon in the BCS Title game.

Chances are that even if Newton is found guilty of these accusations, it will be determined after the season is over. While the charges won't hurt Newton much, they could have devastating effects on Auburn University. Not only will Auburn be stripped of the BCS and SEC Title, but they will most likely face fines and a one to two year suspension. It could be even more in order to set an example to other colleges since this is becoming a trend amongst NCAA colleges. The worst that Newton faces is that his possible Heisman Trophy can be stripped. If found guilty, he will most likely enter the NFL Draft and reap the benefits of an early NFL career.

Thoughts

I personally hope that the allegations are untrue, but the fact of the matter is where there is racket there is usually a reason. It does seem that these types of allegations always come about when the victim is at their highest peak of performance. Keep in mind that Reggie Bush was thought to be clean before the Saints rise to fame, winning the Super Bowl. As long as this kind of action is going on there will be someone out there looking to get paid to keep their mouth shut and if they aren't paid they will most likely look for fame and other ways of benefiting from their inside knowledge.

Cam Newton's Auburn Achievements

Newton may only be a one year Auburn player, but he has already taken over many records. In his first game as a Tiger, he was named SEC player of the week after his 5 touchdown performance win over Arkansas State. A few weeks later he would do the same to South Carolina, who Auburn will most likely face again in the SEC Championship game.

So far, Newton has passed for a 94 yard touchdown, which is a new Auburn record. Just a few weeks ago, he broke two records on a single play. On a 49 yard run, Newton escaped 5 tackles and scored a touchdown giving him the record for most touchdowns in a season by an Auburn player, formerly held by Pat Sullivan in 1971 and also broke the record for most rushing yards in a season by an Auburn Quarterback which has stood for 47 years by former Auburn Quarterback, Jimmy Sidle.

Interesting Hub,although I don't know much about American sport, but here in Australia I do know that a good sportsman can get away with doing something illegal just because he is good at his sport. There's one rule for them and another for the rest of us

Great analysis of the situation and player. Since the investigation is still going on, we don't know just how much is true or not yet. How do you feel about this week's temporary NCAA ruling on Newton?

I am actually very surprised how well he did in the NFL his rookie year. Robert Griffin III reminds me of Cam except smaller. I am a huge RG3 fan and hope he has half the season Cam had. Goo Hub!
