Can a Woman Coach a High School Boy's Football Team?

Barring some of the usual men-women-boy-girl sexuality issues, language, locker room etiquette, the answer is yes. That is what Natalie Randolph, 29, is doing now in Washington, D.C., where SHE is the head football coach at Calvin Coolidge High School. The usual outcries from men poured in with the usual cites as to why a woman could not possibly be a coach of a boy's football team. Granted, it is not a perfect situation many times, especially if you get one pissed off huge dude that has an attitude. Better to have a large coach to counter that.

Of course, women responded in the expected manner also, citing that "men have never given childbirth-talk about pain". Well, sure, but it is a different kind of pain and once the birth is done, it stops, while in contact sports, it simply continues until the season is over.

Coaching is not about gender. A female can inspire boys to be better football players just as well as any guy. If the woman coach has men staff around her to demonstrate football techniques, then as a coach, she can inspire and create plays and strategies. She can demonstrate the play or technique in a dry run to show players direction. If you ever watch what a football coach does, he yells a lot, complains, calls other's names, demonstrates plays, assesses skills of players, knows weaknesses and strengths and become a counselor. Women are no different. Duh?  In fact, having a woman coach may just inspire the male players to perform better, may teach them more tact, simply because it is a woman. Guys are like that. They may bitch about it, be negative about a woman coach, but in the end, they must adapt.

And who said that a woman cannot be a real bitch? Maybe the guys, when they were younger, performed better when their mom was screaming at them. Those things become part of one's psyche even as an adult.

There are plenty of women coaches for boys teams: in Tampa, Steph Crawford is the head basketball coach for the boys Hillsbourough HS, in wasila, AK, Joanie Welch is the coach for the boys hockey team at Wasilla High

You know, before I read this I was thinking-no it is far better for men to bond with young men and be coaching them--but then I read your hub and I was pondering about what you said-a woman screaming at them-and them possibly performing better on the field...interesting hub read.

I don't know why gender must always be an issue; Either you can coach or you cannot coach, and ability should always be the deciding factor.

I agree. Gender should not be an issue 90% of the time and women that are angry can really motivate!

ofcourse a woman can coach a football team! I have seen it happen before and its phenomenal! But i agree with "Canklefish" that its either you can or you can not coach. she shouldn't be put there to coach just because she is a woman who can scream as some women can scream but can't coach! I am a strong believer in merit... to coach on merit that she can.a good hub perrya.*

I think it is fine as long as the female coaches don't think they have a right to the changing area or Locker rooms. For some strange reason they seem to think they are entitled to this. I can tell you, if a female coach walked into my sons locker room her and I would not have a p pleasant experience!
