Conquering Death

By Tony DeLorger © 2010

Perilous though the thought may be, wanting to experience the adrenalin rush of BASE jumping, extreme snowboarding, mountain climbing and the like, has become the goal of many a thrill-seeker. From the beginning of time human beings have wanted to challenge our greatest foe, death.

Putting oneself in mortal danger and in a sense conquering death has for many, become an addiction that soon turns into obsession. That feeling of adrenalin frenzy and knowing you are risking all for a chance to feel immortal has become a drug of choice for many.

For those devotees normal life has not the challenges to satisfy their desires and they are driven to search out more and more difficult and dangerous exploits; the closer to peril, the greater the buzz, and so it goes on. These special people are not mad, just addicted to the freedom and satisfaction of success.

BASE Jumping is still considered the most dangerous sport in the world. Beginning in the late seventies, BASE Jumping has become an international sport. Having to meet the requirements of making four types of jumps, participants are then awarded a BASE jump number. In 2005 the numbers were over 1400. From 1981 to Dec 7, 2010 there have been157 fatalities because of BASE Jumping. In 2002 there was one fatality per sixty participants. This is not a sport for the faint-hearted.

Conquering death is of course a misnomer. Death is every present for the participants of extreme sports, but apart from the risks, their efforts for them are more than worth it. We mere mortals may not understand and for me I like my feet to remain on the ground, but for some life is an adventure that never ends.
