The Stage Is Set - Barcelona '92 Olympics

In 1992 the Olympics were held in Barcelona. Derek Anthony Redmond, a British athlete was set to win a medal in the 400m track event. He had reached the semi-finals and was looking good.

He was 27 years old in Barcelona and he had broken the British record for the 400m at the age of twenty with a time of 44.82 secs. His record was broken two years later in 1987but he reclaimed the record with a time of 44.50 secs which nobody would break for another five years.

That record would be broken in 1992 but by only just 0.03 of a second.

Plagued With Injury But Never Giving Up

Derek was, however, an athlete plagued with injury during his running career and had undergone a series of operations before the 1992 Olympics.

He ran the fastest time for the opening round and won his quarter final. He didn't know it at the time but he was going to be remembered for something far more profound than winning a medal and the memory of what happened lives on in the hearts of everyone who witnessed what happened that day.

Becoming A Witness To Something Special

Sometimes things happen to remind us of something very important , something we all too frequently forget in our race through life.

So In the video that follows I wish to share with you a very special incident so you too will become a witness to that very special something that makes us who we truly are.

The Derek Redmond Incident

Don't Skip The Video

If you haven't watched the video then this article loses its impact so I urge you to go back and watch the video.

We Are Not Alone

The incident is one of the most well remembered moments and has featured in Visa and Nike commercials because of how powerful its message is.

I wrote this article to illustrate the power of love and how important relationship is. What happened that day on the 400m track is nothing short of beautiful and a testament to love that is the basis for everything.

We are not alone and at those very times when we feel crushed there is a force that is right there beside us. When we are ready to acknowledge that there is another way of perceiving than by ego then this force will reveal itself but until that day it will not interfere with our choices.

Inspirational Words

Below is a poem given to me when I was a very young man and which has been a great source of inspiration to me throughout my life.

They don't have an "Inspiring" button... wonder how they overlooked that one?? So true, "We Are Not Alone" And I too have a plaque with Footprints In The Sand, one of the items in my little box of possessions that has managed to stay with me through it all...

Really inspiring hub which I couldn't help but rate up. :)

Thank you Michael, I was so moved by this video when I first saw it that I cried and I don't easily cry. I showed it to my family and they were each equally moved. Footprints has travelled with me wherever I have been in this world and holds a very special place in my heart. It was on a card given to me when I was about 18 years old.

Thank you a thousand times Irish for posting this up. "When you don't give up you cannot fail" has never had a better example.

..you are a personal hero and inspiration to me my friend. And yes I starting crying when watching the video (the music definitely added to the moment) because that is the true spirit and ideal of the OLYMPICS. Not just the gold silver or bronze but being able to compete and participate and be in that moment. And you have given us a lot of profound and inspiring moments with your heart and mind intact through every hub that you write ..... it's been a pleasure and such a grand learning experience - I will be posting this most wonderful hub and the meaning behind it - to my Facebook page with a direct link back here - so that we can all finish the race on that one day it may seem 'beyond' us.

lake erie time 4:45am home from work and listening to the great Steve Lacey on soprano sax play the music of my favorite jazz composer Thelonious Monk.

Whenever I thought about Barcelona, it reminds me of the powerful theme song - Amigos Para Siempre. It means Friends for Life.

Great hub that touches the heart of readers. Unfortunately, the spirit of not giving up seems to have lost its way among most British sportsmen and sportswomen. I think I am just referring to football and tennis. It's disappointing to see when they can be good and rubbish at the same time.

Thank you myi4u, for visiting and commenting on this hub. This one is special for me and goes way beyond the sport and never giving up. There is another message here that is far deeper. What happened on that track is something very special and I am not sure if the intensity of the emotion felt depends on the viewer's childhood experiences. What do you think?

With regard to British sports I think it will get better when the country gets hungrier. It is harder for someone who has everything to undergo the torture required to be a winner nowadays. How do you think a man like Haile Gebrselassie who used to run 10 miles to school every morning after doing all his chores could break his own world record nine times?

Wow!! I am so moved by this mans will. The power of the human spirit is truly amazing.

Was also given that poem many years ago when my mum passed away, a great source of emotional support.

Thank you for sharing this hub SW.

"if the intensity of the emotion felt depends on the viewer's childhood experiences. What do you think?"

If one is directed by an Ego Self created be the Seperation from Spirit Self (and I know we still have miles to go for at least three of us to travel along this path...) as well as Seperation from the One, the Source (and here I am reminded that we have yet to begin our study together of ACIM)then I think that there is no way not to say that the intensity of emotions felt does have some relation to the viewer's childhood experiences. Yet, in the spirit of ACIM (and other's) on a much more sublime level the intensity felt also has a realtion to previous experiences, however on a much more Universal theme than that of an "individual's" childhood. Without going into it too deep here, and too be sure to cause this to be revisited (Once written then further exploration is unavoidable, for thoughts can be so situational... for me :) ) I have yet to be in agreement with the thought that emotions, as we know them, are any part of whatever is before, or comes after.

blessings my friend,

Michael

Thank you Michael, I appreciate you visiting and taking the time to comment. However, could you elaborate on your words "I have yet to be in agreement with the thought that emotions, as we know them, are any part of whatever is before, or comes after." ?

I don't wish to jump the gun here and reply to a meaning that has nothing to do with what you mean.

Yes, this is a truly inspiring video and an awesome hub. The song by Josh Groban always brings a tear to the eye.

I recall reading this poem: 'Footprints in the Sand' when i was a child. Very moving and inspiring also. Good job. Good message.
