FC Barcelona has made numerous achievements in many different national and international competitions throughout its history but there are a few players that really stand out, not just in football statistics but in the memories of the club’s fans.
Some amazing players have graced Barça’s dressing room. A few players that will always be remembered are Ladislao Kubala 1950/60, Johan Cruyff 1973/78, Romario 1993/95, Stoichkov 1990/5 and 1996/98, Ronaldinho 2003/08 and the surprising Lionel Messi who has dazzled fans ever since his first official appearance in 2004.

FC Barcelona’s “pichichis”
FC Barcelona has won the “Pichichi” trophy awarded by the Spanish football newspaper “Marca”, given to the top scorer of the Spanish football league, 11 times. The first player to receive the trophy was Mariano Martín (1942/43) who scored 32 goals, and the most recent, Lionel Messi, who scored 34 goals in the 2009/10 season.

The Golden Ball
This prize, awarded by France Football Magazine for the best player of the year, has been won by 6 FC Barcelona’s players. Luis Suarez was the first one to receive the award in 1960.
Johan Cruyff won the prize in 1973 and 1974. After this double Golden Ball for a Barça player, the award was won again 20 years later by Hristo Stoichkov in 1994. Only five years later, in 1999, it was awarded to the Brazilian Rivaldo, who was followed by Ronaldinho in 2006. Finally, in 2009, Barça’s current star player won the award. Obviously, we were referring to Lionel Messi.
FIFA World Player of the Year
This prize, awarded by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association since 1991, has been won by Barça players on 6 occasions. The most interesting thing about the players who have received the award is that, with the exception of the last winner, all of them were born in Brazil. One of these players has won the award twice.
The first Barça player to win the award was Romario (1994), followed by Rivaldo (1999), Ronaldinho (2004 and 2005) and the Argentine Lionel Messi (2009).
European Golden Boot
The European Golden Boot or now referred to as the European Golden Shoe, that is annually awarded to the top scorer across all European leagues, has been won by two FC Barcelona’s players so far: Ronaldo in 1997 and Lionel Messi in 2010.

Marcos Aurelio scored the club’s 1000th goal on October 22, 1950; Pedro Zaballa Barquino, number 2000 on January 12, 1964; Quini, number 3000 on January 24, 1982; Guillermo Amor number 4000 on March 9, 1996 and Lionel Messi scored number 5000 on February 1, 2009.
