Federer Survives Scare Against Feliciano Lopez
Close Opening Round
Roger Federer who reached the finals against Rafael Nadal at last year's Madrid Masters came within a few hairs of packing his bags early. He prevailed 7-6 (13), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (7) over Spanish player Feliciano Lopez.
Lopez had the crowd behind him and at one point, the match in his hands. During the tie-breaker in the final deciding set, he was up 5-3 when he failed to complete a standard smash in the open court. The point allowed Federer to draw even and eventually serve out the match at 9-7.
Federer's next match should be somewhat easier as he faces Frenchman Xavier Malisse who he owns a 3-0 record against. Federer will still need to fine tune his game and his confidence as he will potentially face Nadal in the semi-finals. Should he manage to beat Nadal, he would still be facing a back-to-healthy Djokovic on the other side of the draw.
