Five Best Camping Hammocks For Your Sleeping Pleasure in the Outdoors

Updated on November 7, 2010

Usually when people go camping they tend to sleep in tents. But did you know that some people prefer to sleep in camping hammocks rather than inside a tent? Sleeping on a hammock can have some surprising advantages over sleeping in a tent. Hammocks are easy to set up if there are trees around. And, because you're suspended, you won't bothered by the soggy ground if your hammock has a built-in tarp to protect you against rain. Some people prefer a hammock because they can never get comfortable on the hard ground, while others just like them because there are far fewer crawling insects to contend with.

You may be asking yourself, "how could I possibly get a good nights sleep in a hammock?" You may be imagining yourself constricted or crimped in a hammock. But it's just a matter of getting used to the contour of the hammock. Most hammock lovers will tell you, you just have to spend 2 to 3 nights on a hammock and you will get the hang of it and you’ll love it too. You will be looking forward to sleeping in your hammock on your next camping trip.

When choosing your hammock, choose one with a tough long nylon rope, a durable fabric, a tarp, and a built-in mosquito net if you want to get the most out of it. Choose one that has pockets for your accessories like your flashlight, books and bottle of water. There are also hammocks that are large enough for two people so if you and your loved one are interested in escaping your tent which can get really hot during summer, try one. By removing the tarp when there is no chance of rain and leaving the mosquito net attached, you can have a great night of sleep in the open air, under the stars.

I also love sleeping on a hammock because I love the slight rocking and cradling feeling when the wind moves my hammock. So I will now give you 5 of my most favorite type and brand of hammocks and I hope you enjoy them.

Ok, this isn't actually a hammock, but it's something you'll want to use with your hammock. This multifunctional waterproof hammock shelter protects you from rain and sunlight. Its shelter can be used in two ways: like a diagonal diamond for easy set up or, in a rectangular position for maximum protection against the elements. The shelter itself is what makes it multi-purpose because the blue side is for protection against the rain and the white side is for blocking the sun. You can use this shelter on pretty much any type and brand of hammock. This multipurpose hammock shelter is made from 75 denier polyurethane coated nylon and is about 120 inches long, 136 inches diagonal and just under 60 inches wide. It has its own storage bag and weighs a total of 17 ounces. So if you want more than a plain old tarp, this is it. (Please note that the hammock in the picture is sold separately).
