Floyd Mayweather Jr. Next Fight
Floyd Mayweather Next Fight
Update: Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be facing Robert Guerrero next on May 4, 2013.
As of this moment, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and his team has not announced any future opponent yet.
If you have been following boxing news and stories lately, you may have come across pieces about Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Erik Morales come May 5th next year. If you aren't an avid boxing fan, you probably wouldn't care. If you love the sport, however, rage is likely the feeling that would come to you. First of all, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound boxer today. Erik Morales today, on the other hand, is but a mere shadow of the Erik Morales of old. He is no longer the man who went on wars against the Marco Antonio Barreras and In Jin Chis of the boxing world. He's just old. He's way past his prime.
The whole Mayweather Jr. vs. Morales thing started when Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser, announced that the boxer will be returning to the ring on May 5 next year. He clearly stated Mayweather's return but he didn't name an opponent. He simply called the opponent the “little fella”. Boxing fans went excited thinking that the “little fella” is Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather Jr.'s pound-for-pound rival. It looked like the best in the business are finally getting it on. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. is without a doubt the biggest bout to be made out there. Experts are going out saying it might as well be the biggest bout in the history of the sport.
Everything looked promising until Top Rank boss, Bob Arum came out stating that the “little fella” Ellerbe was referring to in his announcement of Mayweather's return is Mexican Erik Morales. Arum stated that the Mayweather camp approached Morales. He added that Morales will surely accept the fight for the money. Provided that what Arum's saying is true, I wouldn't blame Morales if he takes the fight. If he does, he will likely be in for the biggest payday of his illustrious boxing career.
Additionally, according to some reports, the Mexican press has reported that Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez confirmed that Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Erik Morales was indeed in the works.
If all these things are true, they will be doing the sport a disservice. First, boxing fans aren't going to get the fight they really want which is Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. Second, they will be forced to watch a huge mismatch in Mayweather vs. Morales. Morales is a great fighter and all that but it's really frightening even just by the thought of him trading with the crafty Mayweather. Morales has the heart to fight, there's no doubt about that. He showed it when he went toe to toe with the hard-punching Marcos Maidana. His skills, unfortunately, are no longer there.
Mayweather vs. Morales should never happen. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao should happen. If not on May 5, at least within 2012 before they move out of their prime.
Speaking of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, I pick Money to win. I don't like him but I think his boxing skills are above that of the Filipino dynamo.
