Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton Suspended
I applaud David Stern for his stern approach in dealing with Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton by suspending the players for the remainder of this NBA season. However, the punishment falls well short of making the true statement needed to strongly address the lack of responsibility in the league. Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton landed one more blow to the image of black athletes, an image that is already painted by the brush strokes of an idiotic, immature, and spoiled minority of players. At some point the NBA must make a decision for both the good of the game and the good of its players as to who will be allowed to play in the league.
The league must now stand up and address the problems for what they are, an attack on its future. There are several changes to league policy that can immediately address the mentality of those players making millions of dollars for playing a child’s game. First the league should enforce new standards of play. The famed stare down after making a shot should be banned and considered a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct, along with any preplanned acts of self admiration. Any players convicted of a felony of any kind should be banned from the league for life. No longer will owners have the choice of brining back players who have had numerous indiscretions in the past, simply because they can still rebound. Players should be required to follow a strict code of conduct off the court with violators being punished on a preset progressive penalty system, with the final being banishment from the league.
It goes without saying that the Wizard should be next in line to take action against the two players. No excuses, no empathy. As a Washingtonian and a lifelong Wizards fan, I have watched this team under the dedicated ownership of Abe Pollin since I was a kid. In remembrance of the man who changed the teams name from the Washington Bullets to the Wizards because of the level of gun violence in the city, these two idiots do something as careless and stupid and might I add criminal as to bring firearms to their place of work. Pollin provided Arenas with a contract dreams are made of and this is how his memory has been repaid. On behalf of the Washington fans the Wizards should do nothing less than to terminate both players’ contracts. The league should also allow the Wizards to retain the rights to the two players for the next ten years, requiring any team interested in signing them to fairly compensate the Wizards.
Players will continue to push the line of authority in the NBA as far as they possibly can. Once they realize that noncompliance equals no paycheck the rate of indiscretion will drop at a cosmic rate.
