Resistance Tools for Water Aerobics | Swim Board | Barbells | Gloves

Resistance tools for the swimming pool, allow the user to take their workout to the next level. Whether it is webbed water gloves for water aerobics and aquatic kickboxing or a swim board such as the EZ Swimmer for push ups and sit ups.

The EZ Swimmer is a fantastic tool made especially as a swim board to target tone legs, upper body and core. The Seated Balancemimics the balance ball on land, workout your core and allowing full range of motion for your arms. The Train Your Abs Crunch is a sit up that engages your abdominal muscles in the water. The Push Downs are simply land push ups in reverse - providing all the great target toning for the upper back and biceps as the land push up exercises do.

Aquatic barbells are simple and effective. Water aerobics classes are fun and motivational but IF you have a pool at home or in your association, take your barbells and add some core work with the movements for the mermaid and/or the rowboat. If you haven't tried those moves in the swimming pool, you need to take a water aerobics class.

The water is simply great fun for exercising and toning. After all, the say, "Water Exercise is Wise!". And they are right!

If your friend loves the water, they will appreciate the added fitness tools to add variety and fun to their fitness routine.

Don't forget about the surfer - the surfer is often waiting for the next wave. If the surfer can add exercise to their beach front fun, it allows them efficient use of their beach front time while in the sun.

Lotions

Lotion before and lotion after is not a bad idea for those of us who love the water. The water alone can dry out our skin. Add in chemicals for the sake of fighting bacteria and we need lotion even more.

After every swim, do take a shower and completely cleanse all chemicals.

Before every swim, do be considerate of the demand on the chemical use in the swimming pool, whether it is your private pool or the public pool. The more dirt and bacteria added to the clear pool waters, will demand more expensive chemicals which in turn will further dry out your skin.

Manage your swimming pool waters well and you chemical usage will decrease. If you have a private club or attend a public swimming pool, if management is not enforcing the shower before entering the swimming pool rule, do very kindly remind them of this important health item. Signs should be posted not just by the swimming pool but right in the locker room with the showers. Walking all the way into the swimming pool dry and having to be reminded on deck to take a shower is cumbersome. Two signs are needed for a timely reminder. Enforcement of this rule is every one's responsibility - the end users, the management and the instructors.

Heart Rate Monitors

The very best exercise program for the heart is the water. Swim fitness provides a variety of intensity levels from full immersion to kick boxing to water aerobics to water calisthenics. Swimming laps with a kick board or full immersion or with a swim board such as the EZ Swimmer is a great way to target tone both your legs and build endurance for your cardiovascular system.

Treadmills, elliptical machines and bikes on land now all come complete with their very own heart rate monitor. The swimming pool doesn't have this option.

The Polar heart rate monitor is a great fitness tool to track and record your fitness goals.

I always advise my clients - whether on land or in the water, to track over time - 6-8 weeks at a time, their resting heart rate.

Rash Guard on Amazon

Rash Guards

Rash guards are not just for surfers any more. Men and women alike have found the usefulness of this great piece of clothing for the swimming pool.

In the sun, it add an important layer of sun protection. Indoors, men and women alike love this piece of clothing not just for modesty but also for warmth.

Sadly most swimming pools are kept at a water temperature for full immersion swimmers. Baby boomers often love the rash guards to provide a layer of warmth for the cooler water for their non-full immersion water exercise/swim fitness routines.

Water Aerobics Shoes

Aerobics on land, aerobics on water, all demand a little bit of impact on the floor. Protecting your feet from the impact is important. Sneakers on land have long been a standard practice. Water aerobics shoes are just coming into their own.

Water aerobics shoes serve three purposes: 1.) to protect your feet from impact on the swimming pool floor 2.) protect your feet from bacteria and rough payment on deck 3.) and add resistance to your leg movements.

The water aerobics shoe looks very similar to land aerobics only the materials are performance materials designed to withstand both the water and chemicals. Look for shoes with good drainage and traction.

Swim Caps

Swim caps are functional and can also be fun. The styles and colors have grown and there is literally a swim cap for every color, every personality, every size. They even have sizes for swim caps! Amazing.

Swim clubs are now branding their caps. Matching colors and matching logos help the on lookers track the various competing clubs.

Swim caps help keep the water and chemicals away from the hair for full immersion swimmers.

Within the realm of swim fitness, full immersion swimmers rely upon this important fitness tool. For water aerobics and water calisthenics and kickboxing and other such programs, swim caps are purely optional.

The fun part of swim caps today, is that they can be stylish.

Swim Boards | Kick Boards | Swim Fins

Target toning the legs is critical for fitness. The legs not only provide mobility, but they also provide the key to our metabolism. Scientific research has proven that IF we can build more muscle, we burn more calories. This is important for weight loss but more importantly, often we improve our overall health. We lower our chances of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and other ailments that affect the quality of our life.

Similar to full immersion swimming, kick boards work both the upper and lower body. The goal of swimming laps with either a kick board or the EZ Swimmer should be target toning of the leg muscles and hip flexors. For many the innovative fitness tool, the EZ Swimmer makes swimming laps and target toning the legs an enjoyable fitness task. The EZ Swimmer Cuddle Core movement is loved by all because it focuses only upon the core, the hip flexors and the leg muscles.

Muscle Terminology

Hip Flexors...

"In human anatomy, the hip flexors are a group of skeletal muscles that act to flex the femur (thigh bone) onto the lumbo-pelvic complex, i.e., pull the knee upward."

Hamstring Muscles....

"In human anatomy, the hamstring refers to one of the three posterior thigh muscles, or to the tendons that make up the borders of the space behind the knee. In modern anatomical contexts, however, they usually refer to the posterior thigh muscles, or the tendons of the semitendinosus, the semimembranosus and the biceps femoris. In quadrupeds, it refers to the single large tendon found behind the knee or comparable area."

Core Muscles...

"In anatomy, the core refers, in its most general of definitions, to the body minus the legs and arms. Functional movements are highly dependent on the core, and lack of core development can result in a predisposition to injury. The major muscles of the core reside in the area of the belly and the mid and lower back (not the shoulders), and peripherally include the hips, the shoulders and the neck."[1]

Swim Boards | Kick Boards | Swim Fins - Goal to Exhaust the Leg Muscles

The goal with these great fitness tools is to traverse across the swimming pool, use the resistance of the swimming pool to completely exhaust your leg muscle. Swimming laps with the EZ Swimmer Cuddle Core is no different than other target toning, the goal is full exhaustion of the muscles. While the Cuddle Core movement does not include the back muscles, it does serve to engage the long levers of the legs. Just as when you are swimming full immersion laps or swimming with a kick board, the goal with the EZ Swimmer Cuddle Core is to kick using the entire leg. In other words do not simply move from the knee.

Encouraging someone to exercise is a great gift. You are showcasing how important the quality of their health is to you. Providing a fun method for someone to exercise is a great gift. The options are many.

Training tip: Do try to encourage swimming laps with a buddy. Consistency is the key with fitness and finding an exercise you enjoy is important. Make whatever activity you choose, something you look forward to.

Swim Board Differences

The body position of a kick board demands that you push the kick board down into the water with the express goal of a horizontal position that directly mimics the full immersion swimmer.

The goal of the innovative swim board called the EZ Swimmer is target toning of the legs. Yes, you can swim supine, yes, many can swim laps with the board simply under their body but the most comfortable and most effective position of the EZ Swimmer is to swim diagonally in the water, engaging only the core, hip flexors and the legs. Other movements for the upper body can be covered in many different ways.

Water - 360 Degrees of Resistance

What makes the water magic for fitness is the 360 degrees of resistance. On the treadmill, we often need to include the incline to increase the heart rate and/or to engage the hamstrings and the buttock muscles. Only swim fitness offer 360 degrees of resistance. Every swim kick, whether swimming laps with a board or kick boxing in the water, offers resistance in both directions of the movements.

Heart Happy

The other piece of magic for swim fitness is the heart muscle works less. Our resting heart rate literally drops the moment we immerse our body in the water. Scientific research has shown the resting heart rate drops 15-18 beats per minute. Yes, the water is cooler, yes, the water is low impact, yes, the water offers 360 degrees of resistance but try checking out your heart rate in the water. Wear a heart rate monitor and see your resting heart rate before you enter the water and after. No exercise needed for this change, your body adjusts automatically.

How do I know off this? I am the inventor of the EZ Swimmer and have been a heart patient since the age of 14 when I had open heart surgery at Mayo Clinic.

The water is a great option - only one caution, always swim with a friend and be sure to set clear goals. All too often people just enjoy the pool for the relaxation, and yet the swimming pool is the best place in the world for exercise. Like all exercise programs, do first consult your physician. Also, like all exercise programs, set clear goals and objects. Swimming laps and counting the laps is one method of goal setting. Swimming laps and timing yourself is another method. Swimming with a buddy is not just safer but also more motivational. Make exercise fun, look forward to the exercise and both your mind and your body will reward you for better health.

Swim Shoes

Swim shoes are different in construction and use and function from water shoes designed and made specifically for water aerobics. Swim shoes are typically made of a type of neoprene. Some swim shoes use thin neoprene, some swim shoes have softer more comfortable and cushy neoprene. Both versions stand up well to the water.

Rubberized Soles - Sign of Quality for the Soles of the Water Shoes

Look for rubberized soles not silicon soles - this is the mark of quality and it will offer added safety for those times when the swim shoes hit fiberglass either with a shower floor or a hot tub. If the purpose is swimming pool only, the roughness of the cement is sufficient with the silicon. If there is any chance of walking on fiberglass (typically hot tubs and some shower stalls), be aware that the silicon is not perfectly safe on those surfaces.

How to Tell Silicon from Rubberized Soles for Swim Shoes

Silicon typically has a softer feel than the hard rubber sole. Most distinctively, silicon has a transparency whereas the rubber is always opaque. Colors for the rubber are almost always opaque white or opaque black.

Infant - Toddler Swim Shoes

Infant shoes often have silicon soles which often are perfectly safe as the baby is toddling not walking. Be aware, however, any silicon sole reacts completely differently with fiberglass. Rubber soles are more expensive, more durable and do offer the convenience of safety for all wet surfaces.

Swim Shoes with Adjustable Closures

Swim shoes with adjustable closure are a cost effective substitute for many for water aerobics. If the water aerobics includes substantial kicking, be aware, the plastic closure may not hold. For water walking, the plastic closure has proven very effective. For kick boxing, invest in a shoe with a different closure method such as the pull on or the elastic drawstring.

5 Fabulous and Frugal Stocking Stuffers for Water Lovers

  • Steel Water Bottle
  • Mesh Gear Bag
  • Ear Plugs Ear Clips - Nose Plugs Clips
  • Suction Hooks for Drying Swim Suits
  • Lapel Pins to Showcase Your Vocation or Advocation

Steel Water Bottle

All water lovers know the importance of hydration.....  Staying hydrated while exercising in the water seem counter productive but the interior of the body still demands water.  Science has taught us, if we don't stay hydrated by the time our body tells us we are thirsty, we are already dehydrated.

Add a steel water bottle to your list of stocking stuffers - it is a health item and very much appreciated gift that will serve front and center for many years to come.

An upgrade from the basic throw away razor.  A razor with a softer touch is always appreciated.  This is my personal favorite.  I enjoy adding the shaving cream and then my legs are as smooth as silk as they say.

A fun and inexpensive gift.  A great gift if you have any history sharing a razor.  A laugh will make long term memories.

Stocking Stuffers - Mesh Gear Bag

Carrying wet stuff is a drawback for our friends and ourselves for our love of the water.  A mesh bag always comes in handy for transporting wet shoes, wet suits, wet fitness tools from place to place.  What a great and practical and very thoughtful stocking stuffer for a water lover.

Ear Plugs - Nose Plugs

Ear and Nose plugs are a tiny gift that easily slips into the stocking. What a smile they will have when they see your thoughtfulness.

Latex Sensitivity for Heart Rate Monitors Ear Plugs Nose Plugs

Be careful on these pieces, if the person is sensitive to latex, the ear plug or nose plug may aggravate their skin.

I own two Polar Heart Rate monitors and love both of them. As Polar forewarned me, some people are sensitive to the latex. This is true for me. This doesn't stop me from wearing my Polar heart rate monitor, it simply means I don't wear it through the entire day. I only wear it when I need it - land or water.

For many, the nose and ear plugs may be handled the same way. For some, the latex sensitivity may be too much. So simply a word of caution for you to do your homework on these three specific gifts - Heart Rate Monitor, Ear Plugs and Nose Plugs.  Read the description closely, ask your gift recipient IF they know IF they have any sensitivity to latex.  I had no idea until after I purchased my first heart rate monitor.  But please note, my sensitivity did not stop me from wearing it and I even purchased a second one.  These are important fitness tools that help us with our exercise routines.

Stocking Stuffers - Bathroom Suction Hooks

Just as the mesh bag is something we don't think about, so too, the hook for the added storage in the bathroom is much loved. A very tiny and simple thing but will conveniently store and dry both shoes and suits. Many water shoes come complete with tabs on the back of the shoe for allow the hook to hold in place and quickly air dry the shoes.

I have had hooks that work great and then the cheaper hooks - beware, you might be throwing your money away, do look for quality. The suction cups for the wall hooks that have the pull is what works best for me. These types of hooks are a little more expensive but 100% more durable and useful. Convenience is about durability. Hooks falling off the wall are not just a headache but a hassle, buy a quality hook that works and you will have a great gift that is loved for many years.

Label Pin for Water Exercise Lovers

Stocking Stuffers - Lapel Pins

Throughout the world, organizations promote who they are and what they do with lapel pins.

The same is true for the many different functions of water within the world of swimming, water aerobics and swim fitness.

Whatever you call with wonderful world of water exercise, whatever your function, there is a great lapel pin for you to give to others.

Lifeguards are sadly forgotten at holiday time.  The achievements and appreciation of the swim coach often go over looked too.  And for those who swim daily or love water aerobics or are just waiting for someone to ask about water calisthenics or kick boxing, the Water Exercise Is Wise lapel pin is the perfect gift.

A fantastic stocking stuffer that is sure to bring a smile to everyone's faces. Purchase these now while supplies last.

TINA V,

The water sports are many, the swim fitness programs offer even more options. Love anything with the water. Hopefully these are helpful ideas. The prices I thought were helpful for gifts too.

Lots of great suggestions here. I actually have been thinking about buying a pair of swim shoes for my mom. She is diabetic and her feet should be protected all the time even when she's in a swimming pool. :)

Om Paramapoonya,

Shoes for diabetics are critical - you are absolutely correct. But shoes are really needed for everyone on the swimming pool deck, bacteria simply loves water and then you add in the warmth and the bacteria has a strong army attacking our immune systems.

lillygordon,

Gift ideas are great when you hit a home run and give something meaningful. Material items often do not mean allot in the long run. Something someone will use is a cherished gift. The water is a special environment for exercise and relaxation.

Thank you so much for your high marks - it means allot.
