King’s XI Punjab Vs Pune Warriors

First Defeat for Pune Warriors

Match Turned Out To Be a Damp Squib

Yesterday, two IPL matches were played. The first match was a thriller between Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore. After watching that match, I sat down before the TV to watch yet another thriller between Pune Warriors and King’s XI Punjab. But the match turned out to be a damp squib. It was totally one-sided match and I could have skipped it and done some other work.

First Defeat for Pune Warriors

Pune Warriors had won all its two previous matches and one expected a great fight from them. On the other hand, KXIP had lost all its previous two encounters and one expected a lackadaisical performance from them. But the expectations were thrashed on the field. While Pune Warriors put up an insipid performance with bat, ball and fielding, KXIP excelled.

Pune Warriors Innings Folded Up Cheaply

Pune Warriors put up just 115 runs in 19 overs. With this kind of total in the IPL, Pune Warriors knew that it would be difficult to defend against the onslaught of the KXIP. Pune Warriors skipper Saurav Ganguly made a breezy 16 off 9 balls with three fours. Uthappa could make just 17 runs off 16 balls with one six. M Manhas was the top scorer for the Pune Warriors with 31 made off 28 balls with three fours and one six. Pune Warriors lost wickets at regular intervals and finally folded up without even completing their allotted 20 overs. Mascarenhas bagged five wickets for just 25 runs.

Marsh Helps To Stabilize Innings

When KXIP started its reply, there was a sensational first ball dismissal when Paul Valthaty was clean bowled by Dinda. But the two Australian batsmen Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh started building the KXIP innings and put on 50 runs partnership for the second wicket before Gilchrist was out for 21 with three fours. Adam Gilchrist has started timing the ball well and one hopes that before long, he will start making his big hits that had been a delight to the huge IPL crowd in the Indian stadia. Shaun Marsh remained unbeaten with 64 made off 54 balls with seven fours and a six. The spin bowler Chawla gave him company till the end with a score of 21 off 24 balls with three fours. KXIP won the match by seven wickets off 17.4 overs. This was the first loss for the Pune Warriors and first win for the KXIP.

Pune Warriors Were Over Confidant

Pune Warriors’ bowling was shoddy. Their fielding was reckless and inferior. Many catches were dropped and many unnecessary runs were gifted away to the KXIP. It seemed that Pune Warriors were resigned to their fate after their innings was over. Mascarenhas was awarded the man-of-the-match for his bowling performance. It seems that Pune Warriors, after defending a low score of 122 against the Mumbai Indians, seemed confident to defend any low score against any team. This over confidence led to their fall yesterday. Shaun Marsh walked in during the second ball of the innings and remained till last. But his innings contained a life. He was dropped by Dinda off Ashish Nehra when he was on 41. Shaun Marsh was the leading scorer in the inaugural IPL in 2008 with a total score of 616. One reason for the poor performance of the Pune Warriors batting was that the ground was soaked with water because of overnight rain.
