March Madness

Way back in the year 1939 an Ohio State university coach Harold Olsen had the big idea of an NCAA Men's division 1 single-elimination basketball tournament. It is held each spring in the United States to determine the national collegiate basketball championship. The tournament begins in the month of March, and concludes with the final game in April. Today it's become known as March madness or even the Big dance, and is now one of the most popular sporting events in the United States.

All of the college school teams are divided into four different regions with a grand total of 64 teams. Then after a quarter of those teams are eliminated, the tournament moves on to the sweet sixteen. Then it moves on to the elite eight, then to the final four teams, and after two of those teams are eliminated there's the National Championship game. Sounds simple enough, but there's a whole lot of broken hearts in between all of those games.

Filling out all of those brackets has become a national craze! You'll find these basketball brackets in the local newspaper, on the internet, and being handed out by co-workers every year at the end of March. I was first introduced to my first set of brackets years ago, and I look forward to them each and every year now. I even had a co-worker one time ask me to watch his job for him, because he had "Brackets to fill out". Some people do it just for fun, and others do it in hopes of winning extra money through betting, however that usually works the opposite way for them. A lot of business's have policy's against making wagers and betting in the work place, but that's no deterrent when March Madness rolls around every year.

Now you may believe this or not, but you'll find every single year at this time, that a bunch of construction and factory workers have all of a sudden turned into self proclaimed sports analyst. These guys claim to have known all about basketball ever since coming out of their own mother's womb. If you dare to ask them, then these folks will tell you that they feel they have missed a calling in life as a sports analyst. Some of these same fellows have been making their own predictions from way back in February like either Kansas, or Missouri, or University of North Carolina, or Clemson, or Miami, or Duke, or Kentucky, or even Syracuse will win it all with nothing but net. Talk about being a Monday morning quarterback! Now this all might sound funny and humorous to you all, but these guys take all of this very very very seriously to say it at the very least. To these men these are fighting words, and to offer a different opinion to the outcome of the big NCAA tournament may at best lead to an unwinable argument which might not be a very good idea in hindsight.

In North Carolina even the youngest basketball fan can tell you who the best team is in college basketball.
In North Carolina even the youngest basketball fan can tell you who the best team is in college basketball.

At the start of this tournament, which was officially announced on Sunday March 11th 2012 and called "Selection Sunday", UCLA holds the record for the most national championships with 11 national titles. Colleges in the Great State of North Carolina come in second with a combined 9 wins, and the University of Kentucky rounds it out in third place with seven wins. I'm going to make this BOLD Prediction now before the first game is ever played, that at least one school from the Great State of North Carolina will be in either the Men or Woman's Final Four this year! However I also can assure you that just about any resident of the state of North Carolina would certainly expect and tell you the same exact thing. There's no other state in this entire country that has a college basketball base like North Carolina. You'll even find March madness posters in day care centers throughout the state, where basketball is a rite of passage and a birth right. Basketball is almost a religion here along tobacco road. If you don't believe that then just ask anybody in the state of North Carolina. The state of North Carolina also has some of the most fierce and meanest college mascot names in the big four schools, like the Wolf Pack, Demon Deacons, Tar Heels, and the Blue Devils. You can make your own prediction below in both the poll and the comment section. Just remember there will be a lot of broken hearts again this year, and don't be surprised if your heart is among them, especially if you don't live in North Carolina. The excitement is now upon all of us once again from coast to coast, and let's see who will be the college team to come out on top for 2012!

51 people have voted in this poll.

This poll is now closed to voting.

This poll proved to be both very interesting, and accurate. Out of the 68 teams voted on, one out of the four teams with the top votes ended up in the "Final Four" - which was Kentucky with 8% of the votes. The poll rounded out with the other three teams with the top votes - The University of North Carolina with 10% & Syracuse with 14% making it to the "Elite Eight", and California not winning it's first game with 8% of the votes. (On a brighter note for the state of North Carolina - The #2 seed Duke Ladies are still playing strong in the "Elite Eight" in the NCAA Woman's Brackets.)

I accidentally erased Both of my "Final Four" poles when I attempted to close them.

But I decided to go ahead and comment about the results. The interesting thing that I found about the "Final Four" poles were that both of the winning teams were selected. For the men it was Kentucky with 32% of the vote, and for the women Baylor was selected with 45% of the vote. That was some good pickings! The Baylor women also became the first team ever in the history of men's or woman's college basketball to go the entire season unbeaten. They had a winning record of 40-0.

Okay, I've voted...now how about you? Who are you going with in March Madness?

Kathleen Kerswig 4 years ago

I went with Duke although by the time I finish filling out my three different brackets I'll have picked three more winners. I always fluctuate back and forth when I try to pick the winners.

Great hub! March Madness is my favorite time of year. I love sports and I love watching the NFL but my heart belongs to college basketball!

I voted! And I'm Canadian so I really have no idea what I just voted on. (Hope I didn't skew the results! Lol!) I loved watching high school basketball when I was a teen -- it was always a big social outing where all the cool kids hung out -- but beyond that, there's not much ado about college basketball out here on the Canadian west coast. I'll have to come back later and see if I voted for a favorite. Cheers - Sarah

I found this to be very informative. Now I know what all the frenzy is about. I myself usually only follow the NFL, NHL, & the NBA. I may just see what all the fun is about this year.

Not much of a basketball fan, and Canadian to boot. But Memphis is a huge music city, so I voted for them. Now, if this was the NFL......I LOVE football, hockey and baseball. Great informative hub, voted up!

Goody5, It's tough because it came down to two choices. It'll be fun for this to play out.

Thank you for sharing,

P.S. I agree with you about North Carolina, my neighbor to the south. So it was difficult for me to vote elsewise.

What a great hub! Hats off to you.

I have been following March Madness since 1984, the year of Patrick Ewing and Chris Mullen.

As an Ivy Leaguer I will want Harvard to win, but that is next to impossible. I had wished Northwestern to make it to the 64, but they blew their chances after a nice early season run.

So now I am left with my all time favorites - Syracuse.

So go Orange go.

Btw, I am Canadian who studied at a school in NYC.

Although I was for Xavier last night, I think the referees killed the game by two calls that were totally uncalled for in a tense game. As Charles Barclay said after the game, we should not allow the referees to decide the games. I feel good for Xavier, but I had to take it with a pinch (or two) of salt.

Tell you what; I gave up on the Maryland men's team even before this year because I despise Gary Williams. lol

Ever since Steve Blake, Juan Dixon and Co. won that championship in spite of Williams' coaching, he got lazy and expected the blue-chip players to come banging down his door, which didn't happen, obviously, and the program went steadily downhill ever since.

I'm hoping this new coach can get them back to respectability again.

And that's why I haven't paid attention to college basketball this year. Maybe with Gary gone, Brenda Freeze will be freed from the Gary Williams curse of "one-championship-and-done", which it seemed she had caught after her women's championship. lol

I love the job Patsos is doing at Loyola and they played respectable against Ohio State for a good part of that game; the major difference being Loyola's obvious jitters causing them to miss easy opportunities as the game wore on.

I'm happy whenever Duke and North Carolina lose. I was pulling for Georgetown, but, they blew a game they were expected to win and I haven't really given any thought to who I'm now rooting for on the men's side.

Maryland is still in it on the women's side and I'll be keeping an eye on that.

Thanks for publishing this excellent hub. I saw it before but didn't comment for the reasons stated above.

Now I'm glad I did. lol

I decided to keep quiet on this hub until now (especially after my NFL hub fiasco), because I wanted to make sure that my BOLD prediction was still on track. The University of North Carolina men may be out of it now, but the Duke women are still in the hunt for the "Final Four" of this "March Madness" season of 2012, I am totally satisfied as everyone else is here in North Carolina now of their success. Chapel Hill & the Tar Heels may be quiet now, but Durham & the women Blue Devils continue on their legacy as they are in the limelight once again! Thank you all so very much for stopping by to visit & vote, and for making this hub such a success & so much fun!

OMG, what a hub! I cannot believe you laid this out so well even I can understand it. In order of sports, hockey was always my number1 interest after I discovered it. Before that it was all football. Seemed strange I played some in high school and my dad was a real player in his day (2 broken noses to prove it!) After that, it was to always watch the world series, even though I didn't much like baseball (except for the 5 yrs in St. Louis--won 4 yrs and the pennant the other). But I got tickets for the games and still couldn't get into it like football and hockey. HOWEVER, I have noticed an awesome increase it seems in the interest in basketball in the last 5+ ?? yurs, yet was always asking questions and feeling totally stupid. My daughter is a die-hard basketball fan, and both my grandsons play (6-yr-old has made more baskets than rest of team put together, so I NEED to learn! He got best offensive rebounder, so I'm trying to learn. Although your hub is on a totally different level, it really helps me. It's the one sport I know least about. Thanks so much. Very clearly laid out. Great hub for novices or pros!
