This 744 acre park opened to the public in 1976. The Park is named after Thomas F McKinney who settled here with Stephen F. Austin’s 300 Colonists between 1850 and 1852. Thomas McKinney built the first flour mill in the area and bred race horses.

This is a great place to bring the family and go camping, hiking, mountain biking, with over 7 miles of trails. Go picnicking, fishing, and to enjoy the wildlife. Swimming is allowed in Onion Creek; call 512-243-1643 for current creek conditions.

Schedule: Open: 7 days a week year-round. Gate opens from 8am to 10pm.

Directions: The Park is located 13 miles southeast of the State Capitol in Austin off US Highway 183. Take McKinney Falls Parkway, off US 183 South, straight to the park entrance.

Only 15 minutes from Downtown Austin Texas.

Stop by the Smith Visitor Center for guided tours (fee charged per person).

There are 84 campsites with electricity and water. Tree shaded picnic tables are situated near Onion creek. Several hiking trails and biking trails, reserve the dinning hall and amphitheater.

Tips for Hiking and Biking at McKinney Falls State Park | Austin TX

We enjoy taking our family an our pets on the trails at McKinney Falls State Park. In the spring you can find so many beautiful Texas Wildflowers, such as Blue Bonnets, Indian Blankets, and more.

After hiking the trails, you can take your shoes off and wade in the cool waters of Onion Creek, or go swimming in one of the two water holes while splashing around the waterfalls. (As seen in the photos).

You can picnic, or sun on the smooth lime stone rock, or enjoy one of the many campsites mentioned below in this blog.

Tips:

If you want to take magnificent photos of the Texas Wildflowers and Blue Bonnets, visit the park in March and early April.

  • When hiking or biking be sure to wear proper walking shoes and bring plenty of water.
  • When wading in Onion Creek, be careful as the limestone can be very slippery.
  • Take a Camera to take photos of you and your family in a beautiful scenic environment.
  • Take a garbage bag to help keep this park clean.
  • Dogs must be on a leash. Please pick up after your pets.
  • Don't forget the sunscreen.

McKinney Falls State Park, Austin TX | Entrance & Camping Fees

Entrance fees are $6.00 per day, per person 13 and older, under 12 are free. If you purchase a Texas State Park Pass you can enjoy unlimited visits to more than 90 State Parks for 1 year. (Prices are subject to change without notice).

Camping Fees: Daily entrance fees are charged in addition to the campsite.

8 – Primitive campsites – 1 tent, 4 people, $15.00 per night

69 – Campsites with 30 amp and water hooks ups --2 tents allowed $20.00 per night

12—Campsites with 50 amp and water hook ups—2 tents allowed, $24.00 per night

6 --- Screened Shelters 15 amp electoral outlet, with 4 sets of bunk beds (total 8 beds) must bring your own bedding. No Pets, No tents or RV’s, $40.00 per night + 6% tax.

Group youth Primitive camping area—Maximum 50 people, $75.00 per night

Group Rec/Dining Hall – Maximum 75 People, $200.00 per day, and $225.00 per day on weekends

Amphitheater – Maximum 50 People, $15.00 per day
