India and Bangladesh Produce a Thriller As Sachin Reaches Pinnacle of Glory

No Cricketer Is Likely to Surpass Tendulkar’s Records

Kudos to both the teams, India and Bangladesh, for producing a lovely and entertaining match, absorbing all the spectators and TV viewers together. It was an eventful day that saw the Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar reaching the pinnacle of glory. Sachin completed his hundredth international century before a capacity crowd at Dacca. He had to wait for 33 innings and just over a year to fulfil the desires of his fans. This is no doubt a marvellous feat and I cannot envisage any of the present cricketers surpassing this record. Only a new yet-to-be born or already born but in childhood future cricketer may surpass this record and that too is doubtful given the hard work cricketers are asked to produce in the present busy day schedule. Excess work takes a toll on the stamina and takes away fitness and health. As a result, the active playing days of the cricketers are getting shortened. Geoff Boycott could continue to play in his forties. Bobby Simpson could be recalled ten years after he announced his retirement. But the present and future cricketers may not last beyond early thirties or late twenties in their career. Remember, the tennis icon Bjorn Borg retired at the age of 26 as he had burned his stamina while going for achievements beyond comparison. This being the case, another cricketer equalling or excelling Sachin’s record is an improbable one if not an impossible one. Congratulations to Sachin for this excellent performance in a career spread over 23 years. Sachin started it in Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16. The fact that he is still playing before us with the same vigour and enthusiasm speaks volumes of his capacity to maintain his body and stamina.

India Had Put Up a Good Defending Total

After completing his ton, the Master started hitting out and scored another 14 runs. Finally when he was out for 114, the entire crowd in the Dacca stadium stood up and cheered him as one man. Sachin should have no regrets that he did not achieve this feat before his home crowd in Wankhade stadium in Mumbai. Throughout the innings, Sachin played carefully, not taking undue risk at any point of time. His ultra caution slowed down the run rate at times and particularly so in the later part of his innings when he completed his century through painful singles. But in the end, India posted a good total of 289 runs thanks to Virat Kohli (66 off 82 balls with five fours) and Suresh Raina (51 runs off 38 balls with five fours and two sixes). Bangladesh bowling never looked threatening at any point of time and Indians had a cosy stay at the crease.

Shakib Al Hasan’s Bengali Speech Electrified the Crowd

When Indian innings ended, everybody thought that India was going to win the match comfortably and Sachin would receive the man-of-the-match award. But cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties. Bangladeshi batsmen chased the total with circumspection. They planned their innings in a precise manner and made Indian bowlers and captain Dhoni break their heads to contain them. Tamim Iqbal scored a masterly and well-crafted 70 runs (99 balls with six fours) which proved the base of Bangladesh win. Jahurul Islam and Nasir Hossain made half centuries while Shakib Al Hasan and the captain Mushfiqur Rahim made near half centuries. It was a collective effort on the part of the Bangladeshi batsmen that landed the team in a cherished victory for the home team. The home crowd was thrilled and cheered their team to the echo. Mirpur stadium at Dacca reverberated with chants of ‘Bangladesh, Bangladesh’. Sweets were distributed and fireworks market the celebrations. It was a momentous event in the cricket history of Bangladesh. The crowd’s enthusiasm swelled when Shakib Al Hasan made a brief speech in Bengali, the local language during the presentation ceremony. It was the love for their language Bengali that made the Bangladeshi people fight Pakistan and demand a separate country. It was appropriate that Shakib Al Hasan spoke in Bengali to the cheering crowd. It reminded me about the then Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara speaking in Sinhalese before the cheering crowd in Colombo during the last year’s World Cup semi finals against New Zealand. Local crowd can understand mostly the local language and very few understand English. However if cricket matches are conducted using local languages in commentaries, the international audience will die and cricket itself will receive a setback. Therefore English should be preserved. But occasional use of the local languages in appropriate context will be appreciated by the crowd.

Bangladesh Premier League Helped In Shaping Up the Team

Bangladesh’s win was due to its starting of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) event last year a la Indian Premier League (IPL). The T20 version of the game teaches the players nuances of fast scoring, improvised shots and quick planning to finish. I will not be surprised if Bangladesh defeats Sri Lanka in its next match and qualifies for the finals. There is a distinct improvement in Bangladesh team from what I saw them last year in the World Cup. Even during the World Cup, Bangladesh batsmen made an attempt to chase the big total that Indians had posted in the opening match. Had Virender Sehwag not scored that 173 runs, Bangladesh would have defeated India in the opening match and sprang a surprise. India might have been demoralised because of that defeat and might not have even won the World Cup.

Asia Cup Is Made Interesting Now

Bangladesh’s win against India has also made Asia Cup interesting now. All the four teams have a chance to go to the finals now and the contest is no more one-sided. Had India won the match, its match against Pakistan on Sunday would have been just a rehearsal for the final and important players may be rested for the match. But now the contest will be quite lively. An India-Pakistan match on Bangladesh soil will produce that kind of electrifying atmosphere in the sub-continent and take cricket fans to dizzy heights.

Kapil Dev and Imran Cannot Demand Tendulkar’s Retirement Now

Sachin’s century has achieved another purpose. From now on, the entire burden for Sachin is over. Nobody is going to demand his 101st century or 102nd century any more. Kapil Dev and Imran Khan are not going to clamour for his retirement from cricket. Sachin can concentrate on batting and play his natural game. That will be very helpful to India in its important match against Pakistan. Therefore, India should not lose heart because of this defeat and consider that they are in for better showing in the coming days in the Asia Cup competition.

Remember, Bangladesh Was Bulldozed by Sammy’s West Indies Last Year

Bangladesh should try to defeat Sri Lanka in its next match. Given the current form, it is not beyond the capacity of Bangladesh to do it. The victory against the World Champions India will inspire the team further. But at the same time one has to remember that the same Bangladesh team cowed before Sammy’s West Indies team during the last World Cup when it was bundled out for 58 runs and the match was over in a few hours. Sammy’s West Indies team is not a renowned match winning team. It contains only below-average players with a few exceptions like Pollard and Gayle. That Bangladesh could not put up a show before them shows that the team has weaknesses. These weaknesses have not surfaced so far in this competition. Sri Lanka team is a demoralised team after its losses to India and Pakistan. But it may come on its own against the home side to salvage some prestige. There is a chance of Sri Lanka pulverizing the home side.

Very good and positive article.

many people said Sachin had sacrificed the team's interests for his 100 by playing slowly. I am happy you did not write like that.

But what an achievement!!! and after all he is human too.

Still he managed to score at a strike rate of 80 which is still good.

Now as you rightly said Sachin would play without pressure and we can see lots from him. West Indies bowler Rampaul did not just sink a billion hearts while he took Sachin's wicket in his home ground just 6 runs short of an 100. He resulted India losing 4-0 in Australia.

Just because of this pressure Sachin could not score much more in Australia. He had two innings of 80's during Australia in the first two tests. And a world champion team like Australia can easily exploit this enormous pressure of 100th 100 on Sachin and dismissed him both in Tests and one dayers. Believe me otherwise he would have had another 3 centuries in Australia. So Sachin's wicket loss just so near to his 100 in Wankhade was a huge loss to India. Also as Gavaskar rightly advised him he should have played in the one dayers against the windies in India and he could have completed the pressure landmark easily and before the Australia tour. But he skipped it.

Anyway he has finished it. We should all be proud of the achivement. Great man.

After reaching his 100th ton in this match, I hope the mind block (created by the media) of Sachin would have been cleared. So, hoping to watch his terrific shots in the upcoming match tomorrow against Pakistan.

Your mention about Sakib's bengali speech is excellent.
