Bangladesh War Was The Bitterest India-Pakistan War

India-Pakistan Cricket Match Is Always Explosive

An India-Pakistan cricket match can be the most explosive stuff in the world. It can ignite the passions on both sides of the sub-continental divide. Tomorrow, Sunday will witness yet another such clash in Dacca. When India and Pakistan play, no work goes on in any office. Right from the peon to the General Manager, all will be immersed in discussing, reading reports and talking over phone about the outcome of the matches. In hotels and restaurants all talks converge finally about the match.

England-Australia Matches Are Different

England-Australia ashes series also produces such an excitement across the continental divide. But there is a difference. While England and Australia are bitter enemies on the field, they are intimate friends off the field. They share the same language, culture and religion. They have never fought wars between them. In fact even their national flags are similar.

Bangladesh War Was The Bitterest India-Pakistan War

On the other hand, Pakistan had been carved out of India by the British. During partition, millions of Muslims had been killed in India and millions of Hindus by Pakistanis. After the partition, Pakistan had fought many wars with India. It lost all of them. The bitterest war was fought in 1971 when Indian troops entered East Pakistan and dismembered Pakistan by liberating Bangladesh. After this event, Pakistan thought it was futile to wage another war against India and has been indulging in sponsoring terrorist attacks in India.

Mushtaq Mohammad Implied That Indian Muslims Were Disloyal

As India and Pakistan have not fought directly for over forty years, the cricket matches between them have assumed proportions of a war. In 1976, India visited Pakistan and lost the test series. That prompted the victorious Pakistani captain Mushtaq Mohammad to say that the Muslims all over the world had prayed for Pakistani victory. This was a nonsensical statement. Did Mushtaq mean that the Muslims in India also prayed for Pakistani win? If so was Mushtaq implying that Indian Muslims were unpatriotic and disloyal to their country? Was Mushtaq meaning that the Christians and the Hindus in Pakistan did not pray for Pakistan’s win?

Lord Allah Versus Lord Balaji

Mushtaq Mohammad’s statement led to a backlash in India. In 1979-80 series when Pakistan visited India led by Asif Iqbal, the Hindu fundamental organisations stated that the cricket battle was between Lord Allah and Lord Balaji. Sunil Gavaskar led India to a victory in that series and the Hindu fundamentalists celebrated not for the Indian team’s victory but for the victory of Lord Balaji. This was also a nonsensical statement. A cricket match is fought between two teams. How could two Gods namely Lord Allah and Lord Balaji fight it out?

Will Imran Agree That Christianity Is Superior Because Of US’ Baseball Wins?

In 1992, Imran Khan, after winning the World Cup against England in Sydney, claimed that Islam was a superior religion. This showed that Imran was a religious fanatic. I think probably Imran would have planned an entry into Pakistan politics at that time itself and uttered these statements to captivate the minds of the Pakistani people. In any case this was a senseless statement. If Pakistan winning the World Cup in Sydney proved that Islam was a superior religion, then the US domination in baseball clearly proved that Christianity was the superior religion. Will Imran accept this logic?

Are Talibans Who Shoot School Girls Also Broadminded?

To cap it all, Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain stated after the India-Pakistan semi-final during last year’s World Cup Cricket at Mohali that Muslims were broad minded. Broadmindedness has nothing to do with one’s religion. There are broadminded people and narrow minded people in every religion and every country. I also like to question Afridi whether the Talibans who shoot down innocent school girls in the name of Islam and Prophet Mohammad are also broadminded.

Cricket Will Be Entertaining Without Religious Issues

India-Pakistan cricket matches have been characterised by such senseless and idiotic talks and actions. Cricket has taken a back seat and religion has been given utmost importance in such clashes. Whether tomorrow’s match is going to be an exception I cannot say. But if the match is played with good sense and fought over cricketing terms leaving religion untouched, then the spectators will get a good entertainment.

Indian Batsmen Are In Good Nick

On paper, both the teams are evenly matched. But Pakistan bowling looks better than India’s. Indian batting looks batter than that of Pakistan. One plus point for the Indian team is that Sachin Tendulkar has been freed of the pressure to score his hundredth century, which he accomplished gloriously in Dacca. Now that he is without pressure, he may blast the Pakistan attack and score runs for India. Sachin will be on his own during the match. This should worry Pakistan. Apart from Sachin, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir and Dhoni are also in good nick. Suresh Raina scored a half century in the last match in quick time. I feel India has slight edge in the match tomorrow.

Will History Repeat Itself After 41 Years?

Forty one years back in 1971, Indian troops entered Dacca and bludgeoned the Pakistani soldiers. Pakistani blood flowed in the streets of Dacca. Ultimately India hoisted the victory flag with Pakistani commander General Niazi signing the surrender treaty, signifying Indian victory. Will history repeat itself on the cricket field? Will India smash Pakistan in Dacca on the cricket field, igniting the memories of 1971 war?
