Notable Nine for the Kentucky Derby 136

Kentucky Derby 136-- May 1, 2010

The greatest two minutes in sports is fast approaching, only 22 days away until that first Saturday in May. This years Kentucky Derby promises to be a very exciting one. Traveled over the dirt at a distance of 1-¼ miles, the Derby will have a field of twenty 3-year old horses go to the starting gate. Here is my list of the Notable Nine for the Kentucky Derby 136.

Notable Nine

1) Eskendereya. [sire: Giant’s Causeway / dam: Aldebaran Light]. An impressive run in the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct indicates that distance will not be a problem for this guy. Will have to have a good trip to be draped in the garland of roses. The Wood had only six horses, the Kentucky Derby will have twenty.

Highest Speed Number: 101.

5) Lookin’ At Lucky. [sire: Smart Strike / dam: Private Feeling]. Victim of a terrible trip in the Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, CA. Will need to stay clear and not get boxed in by any of the other nineteen horses in the Derby. Sharp turn of foot entering into the stretch. Could be the number two choice at the bell.

Trainer: Bob Baffert (2 KD Wins).

Run Style: Closer.

Graded Earnings: $1,480,000.

Race Record: 8 races = 6-1-1

Highest Speed Number: 98

6) Noble’s Promise. [sire: Cuvee / dam: The Devil’s Trick]. A nice 2nd in the Rebel at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, AR. Will be running in the Arkansas Derby at the same race track this Saturday (4/10). In no need of additional graded earnings, but should run well getting in another derby prep race before the big dance.

Trainer: Kenneth McPeek

Run Style: Forwardly Placed.

Graded Earnings: $708,000.

Race Record: 7 races = 3-3-1

Highest Speed Number: 98

7) Dublin. [sire: Afleet Alex / dam: Classy Mirage]. Third in the Rebel at Oaklawn Park. Will also be running in the Arkansas Derby. Depending on how well he does and how well others do he could find himself on the graded earnings bubble. Wonderful horse.

Race Record: 7 races = 2-1-1

Highest Speed Number: 96

8) Interactif. [sire: Broken Vow / dam: Broad Pennant]. Ran a nice race in the San Felipe at Santa Anita Park placing 2nd. Versatile runner in the money on dirt, turf, and synthetic. Will be running Saturday (4/10) in the Bluegrass at Keeneland in Lexington, KY. Should boost his graded earnings to assure him a spot in the Derby. Expect him to run a great race on the first Saturday in May.

This years Kentucky Derby may be one of the most exciting ever. There are a number of horses with exceptional early speed, which could make for a torrid pace. This would open it up for those horses that are forwardly placed or have a great closing kick. These Notable Nine will most assuredly be in the mix. We wait with heart pounding anticipation.
