Could The Osprey Talon 22 Be The Ultimate Multi-Use Day Pack?

As someone that has lots of outdoorsy interests buying the right backpack can be an arduous task. I've owned the Osprey Talon 22 Litre Backpack for over a year and therefore feel that I am subsequently in a good position to write an in-depth product review from the basis of being a trekker, walker, mountain biker and also photographer.

Why Did I Buy The Talon 22 Daypack In The First Case?

I purchased my Talon 22 prior to a trekking holiday to the Moroccan Atlas Mountains actually just a few days before I flew out as I was panicking that my previous backpack wouldn't have sufficient ventilation for days walking in the hot sun.

It was purchased in a local branch of Cotswold Outdoor. Cotswold Outdoor is one of the UK's premier stockists of outdoor equipment and I was lucky enough to have received a £10 gbp off voucher for them prior to my trip to Morocco.

That trip to Morocco ignited an urge in myself to do more walking and in the past year I have subsequently ascended

  • Scafell Pike- England's Highest Mountain at 978m
  • Snowdon via Crib Goch- Wales' Highest Mountain at 1085m
  • Ben Nevis- Scotland's Highest Mountain and subsequently the Highest Point In The British Isles at 1344m

All with my Talon 22 on my back as well as using the pack to carry photographic equipment while cycling and skiing.

Could The Osprey Talon Series Be The Ultimate Multi-Use Backpack?

Osprey have designed their Talon series of backpacks for active light pursuits with the following features

Osprey Talon Fabrics

Main fabric is 70D x 100D Nylon Shadow Box with lighter panels constructed from 160D x 330D Nylon Shadow Box for durability.

Large front pocket with clip access made from Stretch Woven Lycra fabric for sculpted storage

Osprey Talon 22 Pockets And Features

The Talon 22 features an amazing array of pockets to help stash everything you could need for your hike or travels

Top Stash Pocket

A top entry stash pocket allows you to store small, much needed items easily. The pocket features a good sized zip baffle which should be fine for even the coldest of hands in winter gloves to squeeze a finger into.

The top stash pocket features an internal mesh pocket to allow the contents to breathe. So stashing a banana for energy is less likely to get sweaty and stay fresh ready to eat.

The top stash pocket also features a great key-keeper for you to clip a keyring to. This gives you the security of being able to quickly pull items out of the pocket. If you have a wallet that has a keychain you have the added security of the fastening if you're walking through a city crowd.

Double Zippered Panel Pocket With Panel Load Access

Easy access main pocket uses a double zip for access at the users chosen point with both zippers featuring the excellent loop baffles as featured on the stash pocket. When fully opened the main pocket flaps downward to allow ease of content stuffing.

Internal Small Pocket Within Main Compartment

A small 4 inch by 3 inch velcro flap pocket at the rear of the main compartment offers a potential passport/ wallet stash for additional safety.

Lycra Front Panel Pocket

A stretchy lycra front pocket means you can stash items in the front of the pack for ease of access on the mood. I've found this pocket is great for a rolled up waterproof jacket, notepad or map for access on the go. For additional security the front stretch panel pocket has an additional vertical clip and strap closure for adjustment if required.

Side Lycra Pockets

These pockets are fantastic for stashing small items or water bottles securely whilst you're on the move. They're ideal for 500-750 ml cycling bidons. The side pockets also feature securing straps which you can use to further secure any loads.

Staying Hydrated On The Ascent Up Jebel Toubkal

Rear Hydration Pack Pocket

A good feature for cyclists, skiers and walkers is the handy external hydration pack pocket which allows you to stash a platypus, Camelback reservoir or Osprey hydration pack within the pack, yet separated from the main compartment contents. Your hydration pack is held in place by a handy clip closure system to keep the hydration pack in place while you're being active. This has posed particularly useful and negates the need to remove the pack to access water bottles.

Waist Belt And Shoulder Strap Pockets

The backpack also features two small zipped pockets on the hip belt for extra storage capabilities. I've found these are ideal for any small items you need quick access to on the move. I've used them for things like cereal bars and point and shoot style cameras which you don't want to have to stop and dig out of your bag.

The bag also features two handy elasticated pockets mid-should strap which are ideal for energy gels or a small mobile phone (be careful it fits in well).

The Waits Belt Pockets Are Ideal For Cameras

The pockets on the wait belt are great for point and shoot cameras when on th move. A bit too big for the DSLR though!

The Hikers Worst Nightmare- Sweaty Backs

When you're out walking there's almost nothing worse than your back getting hot and sweaty. The Talon 22 has an Airscape™ back panel which is designed to channel warm air away from the pack for ventilation. In practice this works relatively well. I like the back panel for moderate ventilation as for cycling and carrying camera equipment I prefer for my pack to feel close to my back

The alternative option for a backpack with ventilation would be if the pack itself was to be suspended away from the pack. This style is popular with hikers however the additional support for such a suspension system would add additional weight to the backpack. If you're looking for something that has more tailored ventilation your best option might be something like the Osprey Stratos 24 Litre which is more day-hike specific with further ventilation for those 'sweaty betties' out there!

LED Light Mount For The Commute To Work

I've found the Talon is a great backpack for my bicycle commute to work. It's 22 litre capacity is able for all of my work clothing, a lightweight microfibre towel and my work shoes.

The Talon 22 also features reflexive trim sections and a mounting point to fit a rear LED or 'blinkie' to help with motorists visibility giving the bag the edge over many other backpacks for cycling.

The ventilation system also helps to ensure you don't arrive at work with your back dripping with sweat.
