Finals amidst Match Fixing

Notwithstanding the match fixing scandal that is rocking the world of cricket and particularly the IPL brand of the game, every cricket fan was glued to his/her TV set on Sunday 26th May 2013 to watch the finals between Mumbai Indians and CSK. The gala event was held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Playing before the Kolkata crowd is something special for every team. The crowd is very knowledgeable and appreciates the subtle nuances of the game whether it is cricket or football. They are the first to offer bouquet or throw brickbats.

Quick Wickets

Mumbai Indians chose to bat first not without reason. By opting to play first, they reduced the tension in the game. Chasing a target and particularly a stiff one involves tension and running high BP. But alas, the Mumbai Indians started losing quick wickets and at one stage were three down with not even 20 runs on their scoreboard. Ambati Rayudu, the seasoned player for Mumbai Indians steadied the innings somewhat but it was left to the explosive Kieron Pollard to offer some respectability to the Mumbai Indians total score.

CSK’s Miserable Start

Chasing a target of around 150 involves planning and particularly in a final of this nature when everything is at stake. CSK did not have this kind of planning. In fact they fared worse than Mumbai Indians and lost 3 wickets in quick time for as many runs in their scoreboard. The usually reliable Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina ditched the team for once and that too at a crucial moment. Everybody thought that the CSK skipper Dhoni would play like Pollard and lift the fortunes of his team. Dhoni did try but ran out of luck and partners. At one stage the CSK were at a miserable 58 for 8 wickets. Dhoni and Ashwin were put up in a partnership of around 40 runs. When Ashwin was out, it was clear that Dhoni’s fireworks would not work this time. The CSK folded up soon, leaving Mumbai Indians victorious by 23 runs.

Deserving Win for Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians deserved this victory truly. Sachin Tendulkar has the gratification of announcing his retirement from IPL in a victorious moment. Rohit Sharma was ecstatic as he had skippered most of the games Mumbai Indians played this season after Ricky Ponting gave way because of his poor batting form albeit good in the field. Was there any match fixing in the finals? To the best of my knowledge there was no foul play during the game. The players on both sides played their natural game. Moreover with most of the top bookies and Gurunath Meyappan in the jail under police custody, match fixing could not have taken place in a highly surcharged atmosphere.
