The list of all-time Steelers players includes Mean Joe Green, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Rocky Bleier, Jack Lambert, Jerome Bettis, Rod Woodson, John Stallworth and Franco Harris. Famous coaches who led Pittsburgh include Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.

During Pittsburgh's most prolific period in the 1970s, the team's defense became know as "The Steel Curtain". The tradition from those legendary squads continues through today as the Steelers are often near or at the top of the stats list of best NFL defenses, including in 2008-09 when they won their most recent Super Bowl.

With their immense popularity and history of winning, the Steelers are always one of the top selling NFL teams in terms of overall merchandise sales.
