SOME SEE CLOUDS. I SEE THE SUN

I HAVE RECENTLY RETIRED AND THE EXPERIENCE IS FULL OF WONDERFUL NEW CHALLENGES. AS YOU KNOW FROM MY RECENT ARTICLES,I LOVE THE OUTDOORS AND ESPECIALLY , FISHING.

SOME DAYS I STEP OUT ONTO MY PATIO AND LOOK AT THE CANAL BEHIND THE HOUSE. I SEE LIFE, I SEE EXCITEMENT, AND I SEE BEAUTY. I HAVE A BROKEN DOWN CONCRETE DOCK, THAT IS A BIT OVER GROWN WITH MANGROVES AND WEEDS. THIS IS MY LAUGHING PLACE. REMEMBER BRER' FOX AND BRER' RABBIT AND BRER' BEAR, FROM THE DISNEY MOVIE "SONG OF THE SOUTH".

I WAS ASKED RECENTLY BY AN "OLDE SALT" READER, IF ONE OF MY STORIES WAS TRUE? I REPLIED: ALL OF MY STORIES ARE TRUE UNLESS I SO SPECIFY. THIS QUESTION PROMPTED THIS STORY.

THERE I WAS, SITTING ON THE BACKYARD DOCK; IT WAS A CLOUDY AND MISTY DAY. THE AIR HAD COOLED A BIT DUE TO THE MIST, BUT YOU COULD STILL FEEL THE SUMMER HEAT IN THE GROUND. AS ALWAYS, I HAD TAKEN A FISHING ROD AND A BAG OF SCRAPS FROM THE KITCHEN. THE SCRAPS WERE FOR BAIT, NOT SNACKS FOR ME. I BEGAN MY RITUAL OF THROWING SOME BREAD IN THE WATER TO FEED THE LOCAL FISH THAT RESIDED AROUND THE DOCK. THERE WAS ACTIVITY IMMEDIATELY, AND I WAS ABLE TO GET THE FISH EXCITED ENOUGH TO COME TO THE TOP AND FEED. SUDDENLY I HEARD A LARGE SPLASH ACROSS THE CANAL. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A SMALL TARPON, AS THEY FEED ON THE DOCK FISH. WELL TO MY SURPRISE, FROM THE CORNER OF THE DOCK, AN IGUANA, ABOUT FOUR FT LONG CLIMBS OUT OF THE WATER.

I AM NOT FEARFUL OF ANY ANIMAL, UNLESS ATTACKED, SO I CALMLY THREW A PIECE OF BREAD TO IT. THAT WAS A BIG MISTAKE THAT I LATER FOUND OUT. THE IQUANA SCOFFED DOWN THE BREAD AND ACTUALLY CAME CLOSE ENOUGH TO TOUCH. I MOVED SLOWLY TO MY FEET, AND STARTED TO WALK BACK TO THE HOUSE TO GET MORE BREAD. THE ANIMAL FOLLOWED ME TO THE DOOR. I WAS AMAZED. I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE AN ESCAPED PET AT THAT TIME , BUT LATER FOUND OUT THAT IF YOU FEED THESE CREATURES THEY WILL HANG AROUND A LONG TIME. I NAMED THIS CREATURE "HERMAN" WHILE NOTICING SOME CHARACTERISTICS, THAT WOULD HELP ME IDENTIFY IT IF IT WAS A LOST PET.

I RETURNED TO THE DOCK WITH SOME MORE BREAD AND LEFTOVER CHICKEN. HERMAN HAD GONE, SO I PROCEEDED TO BAIT MY HOOK AND CAST INTO THE CANAL. AS THE DAY PROGRESSED, THE WEATHER REMAINED DAMP AND HOT, BUT IT WAS COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO STAY AND FISH. A NEIGHBOR FROM ACROSS THE CANAL SPOTTED ME AND YELLED "CAN'T YOU SEE IT'S RAINING?" I REPLIED; "NO, THE SUN IS SHINING ON ME". WELL. HE LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS NUTS AND RETURNED TO HIS HOUSE. I'M SURE HE WAS CONCERNED FOR MY HEALTH, AND I TOOK THE OBSERVATION AS POSITIVE. THERE WERE THESE BLACK DUCK-LIKE BIRDS CALLED COOTS MAKING GREAT SOUNDS, WHILE THE CARDINALS IN ONE OF THE TREES WERE MAKING THAT WET WHISTLE SOUND, THAT DISTINGUISHES THEM SO CLEARLY. I HOOKED INTO A LARGE MANGROVE SNAPPER, A SMALL CHICLID, A TARPON AND A TWELVE INCH BARRACUDA. NOT BAD FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS IN THE FLORIDA SUNSHINE.
