Spruce Meadows Kicks off with Championship Competition
Guerdat and De Luca victorious on first day of Spruce Meadows.
It was a tough battle to the winners circle but after negotiating some technical Leopoldo Palacios designed courses, Switzerland's Steve Guerdat rode Albfuehrens Happiness to win the Telus Cup on Wednesday morning, September 7th. For the afternoon Akita Drilling Cup, Italy's Lorenzo De Luca, aboard Limestone Grey won the class.
While Guerdat has been in the winners circle many times and has also competed at Spruce Meadows for years, for De Luca this was his first appearance, which made victory even sweeter.
"i've always dreamed of coming to Spruce Meadows and winning this class is a dream come true," De Luca commented.
Guerdat, who won a gold medal at the London Olympic Games, was pleased with his victory and proudly accepted the trophy at the awards ceremony which followed the class that began with a starting field of over 70 riders. For De Luca, he claimed the victory out of a field of 51.
This was only the beginning of what will be a star studded week at Canada's Spruce Meadows Masters, which will showcase a Nations' Cup and the $2 million CP International among its classes. The show will continue through Sunday. For more about the Spruce Meadows Masters, visit their website at www.sprucemeadows.com.
