The Best Hand Crank Cell Phone Chargers

There's nothing worse than having your cell phone go dead just when you need it most. When you need it most is during an emergency, and when that happens it's great to have some kind of back up. Enter the hand crank charger. This nifty device allows you to charge your cell phone without having to hook it up to a power source.

Most of these devices are, indeed, built for the emergency. They are multi-purpose devices. Usually, they have a torch, radio and maybe a solar cell to offset the hand crank. This makes them extremely useful if you find yourself in an extreme situation, especially if it is dark or cold or the power has gone out. You get the picture, I'm sure. They are also great when you are away camping or hiking.

This article looks at some of the best of these hand crank devices, and in an emergency you won't be isolated by flat batteries in your cell phone.

Etón FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Charger

The Etón FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Charger is a tiny device but really well-built for the price. It includes a cell phone adaptor for recharging as well as a radio and built in flashlight. You do need to mail in the registration card to get the cell phone tip so that you can use it for that function. It has jacks for the battery and an AC adaptor as well, but you will need to purchase the adaptor separately.

You can get power from three different sources. There's the built in hand crank, the solar cells and the USB adaptor. All of these are used to charge built in Ni-MH batteries. For this reason it is a good idea to charge the batteries occasionally, because once the Ni-MH batteries lose their charge all together they cannot be recharged.

For the price this is a great buy, and you'll never have to worry about being without power again for your cell phone, or for that matter a torch in an emergency.

American Red Cross FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Charger

The American Red Cross FR150 Microlink Solar-Powered, Self-Powered AM/FM/Weatherband Portable Radio with Flashlight and Cell Phone Charger is actually also made by Eton, which means many of its features are very similar. To use the cell phone charger you also have to register for the adaptor and the power sources available are the same: you have the USB adaptor, the solar cell and the hand crank. As a back up you can also charge this up via and AC adaptor which needs to be purchased separately.

The unit runs on a built in battery which you must have a charge in, because if the charge fails, so does the unit. This is the main design fault in this unit (very much the same as the one above, again). Be aware, considering the amount of features packed into this device, which includes the cell phone charger, radio, and torch, it is tiny, but well designed overall.

In terms of this and the Eton above, the units are very much interchangeable. For the price either will give you what you need in an emergency situation.

Illuminator Self Powered 4-in-1 FM Radio / Alarm / 3 White focused LED flashlight / Mobile phone charger Crank Powered

If you're only after something really cheap then the Illuminator Self Powered 4-in-1 FM Radio / Alarm / 3 White focused LED flashlight / Mobile phone charger Crank Powered fits the bill really well. This charger is really a flashlight with a radio and cell phone jack attached. What makes this unit different to the others is that it only uses the hand crank to power. The manufacturers have stripped back all the fancy features to give you the basics only. This can be a good thing if that's all you really want.

Because of its price though, don't expect an item as reliable as the American Red Cross and Eton devices above. The hand crank on this is fairly stiff and it takes a lot of work to get your charge. When charging a cell phone you could be in for a real workout!

Buy this one for the amusement value only, not if you want something to last you the ages.
