The PWI Top Female Wrestlers of 2008

The Pro Wrestling Illustrated Top Female Pro Wrestlers of 2008

The sports magazine PWI (Pro Wrestling Illustrated) has released their annual list of the top 50 female wrestlers of 2008. Rather than going into the whole list of 50 women wrestlers, I thought I'd just hit the highlights of the top 25 here. PWI takes into consideration the WWE, TNA and Independent wrestling promotions.

1. Awesome Kong The two time TNA Women's Knockout Champion looks to be pretty much bullet proof with her TNA title. I was kinda amazed that she rated above the WWE Champ.

2. Beth Phoenix The two time WWE Women's Wrestling Champion, Beth deserves to be number one or two. As a little girl, the "Glamazon" even wrote in her diary that she wanted to be the Women's Champion one day.

3. Gail Kim I really don't understand why Gail ranked this high. I mean I know she's hot and all, but she really didn't do much in 2008 other than leave TNA. She has yet to debut officially in the WWE as rumored.

4. Mickie James A fan favorite with a large internet following. She's one wrestler that many think should be holding the WWE Women's Wrestling Championship.

5. MsChif One of my personal favorite Independent female wrestlers. At the moment she holds the SHIMMER Championship for SHIMMER Women Athletes.

6. Sara Del Rey If you follow independent wrestling at all, you know that this young lady had paid her dues. She wrestles not only in the US and Canada, but in Mexico for Lucha Libre Femenil.

7. Roxxi Laveaux Another female wrestler trained by the legendary Walter "Killer" Kowalski. This TNA Knockout held several championships on the Indy circuit.

8. Melina Another WWE fan favorite, everyone anticipated her return to the ring after an injury. Her fans were not disappointed as she started right after the Women's Champ.

9. Michelle McCoolThe first WWE Divas Champion, she just recently lost her belt to Maryse in what I thought was a pretty solid match.

10. Candice Michelle Say what you want to about her in ring skills, this injury plagued WWE Diva keeps coming back to the ring.

11. Mercedes Martinez Talented female wrestler that has worked for WEW, WXW, WSU, Full Impact Pro and SHIMMER Women Athletes.

12. VictoriaMy favorite Diva since the first time I saw her. After putting in around 7 years with the WWE, reports of her retirement keep floating around.

13. Taylor Wilde Former TNA Women's Knockout Champion, she has worked for several Indy wrestling promotions including SHIMMER Women Athletes, Ring Divas' Battle Angels, Twin Wrestling Entertainment, and Blood Sweat and Ears.

14. ODB Another of the eight TNA Knockouts in the top twenty. Because of her size and power, ODB was used to wrestling men on the Indy circuit before she got to TNA. Personally I think an ODB vs Awesome Kong title match would be great.

15. Daizee Haze Besides wrestling for the Indys this year, the high flying Hippy made a few appearances for TNA.

16. Angelina LoveOne half of "The Beautiful People", this lady debuted in wrestling in 2000 making her way finally to TNA.

17. Jacqueline I think once this lady retires, we should be looking at a candidate for the Hall of Fame. A former two-time WWE Women's Champion, and one-time WWE Cruiserweight Champion and the first female wrestler to be included in the list of the 500 best wrestlers from Pro Wrestling Illustrated. She's currently a TNA Knockout.

18. April Hunter A legend on the Indy circuit and another lady trained by "Killer" Kowalski. April may have retired this year. I say may have because she's already shown up in one match after her announced retirement.

19. Nattie Neidhart WWE Diva Natalya is the first third generation female wrestler in the history of wrestling (as far as I can tell). Her father is Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and he is the son-in-law of Stu Hart. Natalya wrestles on the WWE SmackDown! program.

20. Sumie Sakai This Japanese professional wrestler and mixed martial artist was trained by Joshi Puroresu legends Jaguar Yokota, Lioness Asuka, Cooga and Bison Kimura.

21. Allison Danger The sister of wrestler Steve Corino, this young lady has wrestled all over. All though that's gonna have to wait for a bit as Allison and her husband Swiss professional wrestler Ares are expecting their first child.

22. Tracy Brooks Before she was a mainstay in TNA, the "Knockout Law" was a staple on the Indy circuit where she still competes at times.

23. Velvet Sky The other half of the "The Beautiful People". Just because she's pretty don't discount her. This TNA Knockout was trained to wrestle at Jason Knight's "House of Pain Pro Wrestling Dojo" and has been active in the ring since 2003.

24. Sarah Stock She may be Canadian, but this lovely young lady is better known in Lucha Libre circles as "Dark Angel". While still active in CMLL in Mexico, she has done appearances for Shimmer Women Athletes. And she is a former Muay Thai kickboxer

25. Mickie Knuckles Mickie has worked for IWA Mid-South, Chikara, IWA East Coast, Chickfight, wXw Germany, Full Throttle Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Unplugged CZW and TNA. Unfortunately Mickie signed a contract with TNA and later broke her leg at an Indy event. TNA has removed her from the roster, but her fans are hoping she will return.
