Top Ten World Cup Heroes. Gerd Muller-Der Bomber
One of the finest goalscorers Germany has ever produced, his record of almost a goal a game in the finals was outstanding and "Der Bomber" was always devastating whoever the opposition. Most of his goals were scored from inside the penalty area, and nearly always from nothing.
Muller played in two World Cup Finals and although he scored 10 goals in Mexico 70, the poacher would have to wait another four years to collect his winners medal.
Muller made his debut for West Germany in 1966 against Turkey, born to score goals he arrived at the 1970 Finals with a ready made reputation. The Bayern Munich man made his mark in his first game against Morocco as he hit the winner in a 2-1 victory. After this quiet start West Germany qualified in style scoring eight goals in their next two matches, and Muller the machine scored a hat trick in each of the games against Bulgaria and Peru.
In the quarter-final against England, West Germany were 2-0 down, but forced extra-time.It was left to Muller to score one of his trademark goals and knock the World Champions out 3-2. The semi-final against Italy at the Azteca stadium is known as the match of the century.Despite another two goals from Muller they were beaten 4-3 by Italy.

Hat-trick v Peru
West Germany themselves hosted the finals in 1974,and in the group stages they beat Chile (1-0) and Australia, and Muller scored in the 3-0 victory before surprisingly losing the final game against East Germany, 1-0.
The second phase was another group affair. Muller got into his stride scoring against Yugoslavia, and the vital winner in the 1-0 win against Poland. He was also instrumental in creating two goals in the 4-2 win over Sweden.
The final was against the talented Holland, the creators of total football and led by Johan Cruyff.Straight from the kick off the Dutch attacked, and were awarded a penalty which was converted. The German team fought back and levelled themselves on 25 minutes with a Paul Breitner penalty. Then it was left to Muller to score a typical goal two minutes before half-time and win the cup for West Germany.
